Her Smile His Sentence
Chapter 49: Troublesome Substitute
CHAPTER 49: TROUBLESOME SUBSTITUTE
The prisoners in the canteen immediately looked at her, astonished but also amazed to see a woman who had replaced Caelum.
The male prisoners seemed to have seen something extraordinary enter the prison.
The first time Selene saw her, the woman already disliked her. It wasn’t just that she was temporarily replacing Caelum, but Selene had a feeling that something was going to happen during this week.
And for sure, she would be involved.
"That’s our temporary chief? Hmn she looks really pretty. But it’s a shame she looks like she’s going to resemble Chief Rothwell," said one of the prisoners from A block.
The man next to him whistled. "You’re right, she has good curves too. Just look at that chest."
The comment he made was overheard by one of the wardens who had come along with Sarah.
The female warden always walked up to the prisoner and slapped her very hard.
SLAP!
"How dare you harass Ms. Sarah! Who do you think you are?! Quickly kneel down and apologize!" she snapped.
Instantly the prisoners in the canteen looked at them, as the man was forced to kneel down and kiss Sarah’s feet. They felt this was too much, as even Caelum, who was known for his cruelty, had never asked for this. Even though they called him a dirty word.
The two female wardens then approached the prisoner and beat him to immediately kneel down and kiss Sarah’s feet while apologizing for what he had said.
"Stop it! You can’t just beat up a prisoner for a comment like that!" said another warden who had been working at the prison under Caelum’s orders for a long time.
They had heard far more foul language than that in the past. That’s why they felt that the comment was just a small part of it.
"So you’re justifying what he did wrong? Don’t you understand that he abused your own chief in front of everyone with that line?!" The female warden named Dorothy looked annoyed as she pointed at the other warden with her staff.
"I’m not saying I condone what he did. But to have to kowtow, even to the point of kissing his feet, is too much!"
"That’s right, Chief Rothwell didn’t go that far," replied the warden’s friend.
The other prisoners nodded their heads. However, Sarah walked up to the two wardens and slapped them hard and kicked them in the chest.
"Today I am your chief, not him. So follow my rules and don’t argue too much!" she said loudly and firmly.
Everyone’s breath was held as they heard the declaration that they had to follow his rules even if they were arbitrarily made.
Of course, this went against the message Caelum had left not to make any new rules or anything that violated his own.
While everyone was quietly looking at her, Selene chose not to pay much attention and asked Hannah to find a quiet place to sit so they could have breakfast.
"Let’s just sit down, there’s no need to think too much about what she said," she said and sat down at an empty table.
"Are you sure about this? I’m so scared of her, she really does look worse than Chief Rothwell." Hannah said while taking in their current surroundings.
Selene assured her that everything would be fine.
At the end of Sarah’s eyes, of all the people who were just silently staring at her. Only Selene and Hannah seemed to be busy with their own food.
They didn’t seem to care much about her, let alone the warning she had given them.
"Those two aren’t even paying attention at all," she muttered which was only heard by her two female subordinates. They immediately looked at Selene and Hannah.
Seeing that Sarah was not happy about it, Dorothy and her colleague Veronica immediately reprimanded the two women.
"You two over there! Didn’t you hear what Chief Sarah said? How dare you ignore what she said!" said Veronica, this time giving a warning.
The other prisoners turned their heads towards the two women Veronica was referring to, and they gasped when the person they were referring to was Selene.
At first they thought that the two women who ignored Sarah’s words really had the guts to ignore her. However, after they found out who the person was, they thought that it was a normal thing for her to do.
"No wonder, it’s Selene! I thought who would have the guts to ignore such an arbitrary chief," whispered a prisoner to the warden next to her.
"Not surprised at all after finding out, huh?" the warden whispered back.
Dorothy and Veronica then came over and stood near Hannah and Selene. They hit the table where the two women were eating with their batons and then gave a louder warning.
"Didn’t you hear me at all? Who told you that you could continue eating breakfast while Chief Sarah was talking?"
Hannah started to get scared, so she turned to Selene who was sitting across from her. Not even an hour in, she was already getting into trouble with the new replacement chief.
"Is there an order to stop eating? The clock is ticking and we’re not stopping to listen to the commotion. It’s already 7:12, breakfast time is about to run out and you want us to waste it on..."
Selene deliberately did not continue her sentence, leaving the two of them alone to figure out what she meant.
The prison rules were very strict with time, if the breakfast hour was over of course they had to leave the canteen immediately.
"You-! You still have the nerve to say that what Chief Sarah said is not more important than your meal time?" asked Dorothy in annoyance.
"You haven’t been here an hour, but you’re already making up new rules? Even when Chief Rothwell was here, he wasn’t crazy about respect even though he was known to be ruthless," Selene replied again.
"Selene, don’t say that. They’ll get even angrier," Hannah said, holding back her cellmate’s hand.
Sarah saw how Selene had the guts to talk to them like that. She walked over to her, making her bootsteps heard clearly, echoing in the canteen that was so quiet because everyone was getting tense.
She stood right next to the table where Selene and Hannah were sitting.
"So you think that I’m not as good as Chief Rothwell when it comes to leading the way?" she asked. "And you’re right, I haven’t been here an hour, but I’ve already started making new rules. Don’t you like them?"
Before Selene could answer, Sarah picked up her soup bowl and spilled the food over Selene’s head.
GASP!
Everyone was wide-eyed with shock. It was like a declaration of war from Sarah to Selene. A prisoner whose reputation she had not known before.
"Then get used to it for the next week. Because I’ll make sure your life is a living hell while I’m in charge here."
