CHAPTER 60: GAZE OF INTEREST

After returning to her cell room, Selene saw Hannah sitting waiting for her on the bed. Seeing her friend return, the girl immediately approached her with a worried face.

"Selene, is everything okay? Chief Rothwell didn’t do anything bad to you, did he?" she asked worriedly.

However, she immediately noticed that Selene was carrying an ice pack which she placed on her lips. Her face turned red as she knew what Caelum had done to her.

"It must have hurt a lot."

"You can say that. But I was the one who made him do this, so there’s no one to blame for it," said Selene as she sat on the edge of her bunk bed.

She then recounted what she had just learned in Caelum’s study. More precisely, the information about the man who had just arrived that day named Damien.

"No wonder he has so many tattoos on his back and his gaze is so sharp. Apparently he’s the former head of a mafia group," Hannah said, nodding in understanding.

"Right, now I wonder. Is he going to try to do something like find new members in this prison or is he just going to sit quietly without looking for trouble like I did," Selene said.

"But even if he really doesn’t intend to seek followers in prison or not look for trouble like you did. I’m sure the other prisoners will try to make trouble for her like they did for you."

Selene agreed with what Hannah said. Because they knew that people in prison loved to stir up trouble. Showing how strong they were to lead the other prisoners.

Moreover, they did not know the origin of Damien, so they would definitely try to find out for themselves.

"Let it go, I want to see how far he’ll go with all that."

A week later...

When it was time for dinner, Selene sat together with Hannah as usual and she saw Damien from a distance walking alone. He was sitting in an empty seat, making Selene even more curious and eager to try and get closer to him.

However, she realized that everyone would see it and they were Caelum’s eyes. They would talk about her approaching Damien, and Caelum would hear about it.

"It’ll be a big problem if he hears about it and gets mad at me again," she said with a soft sigh.

As she savored her food, Hannah suddenly elbowed her arm. Like she wanted to tell her something. "Selene! Selene!"

"Hmn? What’s wrong?" asked Selene without looking at Hannah.

However, unexpectedly a man sat down opposite them and started eating his dinner. Selene found it strange, not that a man sat down, but that someone else would sit with them.

Usually the other prisoners tried to avoid the two of them because they didn’t want to get into trouble with them.

Once she raised her head, it turned out that the man sitting was Damien. The man who had caught her attention since yesterday because she wanted to know more about him.

’It turns out that without me approaching him, he himself came to me,’ she thought.

But she felt a little confused to start the conversation, especially since Hannah was holding her sleeve because she was scared. She rubbed her friend’s hand, as if to let her know she was there for her.

"From what I see, you must be the new prisoner who arrived a few days ago," Selene began.

"You could say that. I hope you two don’t mind that I’m sitting here with you," he said, still focused on his food at the moment.

"Not at all. You must have sat here because you saw that this was the only place that was not filled with other prisoners, because we usually sit alone. Well we guess we don’t mind having one more member at our table. Right Hannah?"

The short haired girl just nodded her head quickly, feeling scared and also confused as to how she should answer.

Hearing that, Damien then raised his head to look at Selene who was currently talking to him.

Their eyes met, where her blue eyes looked into the gray eyes of the former mafia boss. The gray eyes were a very rare thing to have, and Selene only realized it after coming face to face with him.

After staring at each other for a few seconds, Damien cleared his throat and then he straightened his body position to be able to see the two women in front of him more easily.

"So what are your names? My name is Damien."

"My name is Selene and this is my cellmate, Hannah," she introduced herself.

"H-hello..." said Hannah as she looked at him fearfully.

Damien was used to seeing the people around him staring with fearful and respectful gazes. However, when he looked at Selene, he saw another gaze that did not show fear at all.

Rather, it was a sharp gaze that seemed so mischievous but implied something unreadable to him.

And a glint appeared in his eyes, as if he was beginning to be attracted to her.

They continued with their dinner as time was running out and it was about to be over. But out of the corner of her eye, Selene noticed that Damien occasionally glanced at her.

It was like they shared an attraction even though there were different intentions behind it.

However, Selene pretended not to notice and continued to focus on her food while occasionally talking to Hannah.

"Selene, I don’t like the peas. Can I have some of mine for you?" Hannah asked.

She nodded her head and took the peas from Hannah’s tray. "These are just peas. You could have tried them first before rejecting them."

"But I still don’t like it. Guard will scold me if I don’t finish my food." Hannah sighed.

Seeing their interaction, Damien began to comment. "You look like mother and daughter."

Selene chuckled when she heard that.

"Probably true. Hannah seems like a cute girl to me to be in a place like this."

Smiling, she gently rubbed Hannah’s head which made Hannah smile at her as well. The girl felt so safe when she was with Selene, which was why she wanted to stay with her during her time in the prison.

Plus, Selene’s motherly nature, moreover, was the reason why she was trapped in prison.

Once again, it made Damien even more interested even though it was the first time for them to interact with each other.

’This woman is really different.’

And just as Selene had expected, a man in uniform continued to watch them from where he stood. Seeing his woman talking to another man.
