CHAPTER 188: BECOME OUR CHIEF (2)

"You really don’t know anything about the Undead Society?"

"Ah, so this is how the Soul Search feels. It really feels like every part of me is being laid out in front of you." Tucker said in a voice of enjoyment as I was looking at him with a surprised look.

Even though I was using the Soul Search spell on him, he wasn’t feeling any pain at all.

That was because he wasn’t actually resisting the Soul Search spell.

The Soul Search spell would only hurt the target if they tried to resist it.

After all, the Soul Search spell was something that used one’s mana to forcefully search a person’s soul. That meant that if someone were to resist this Soul Search, they would have to do it either with the strength of their soul or their mana.

The clashing of these powers would harm the soul of the person being searched.

This was where the pain that was associated with the Soul Search spell came from.

But if one didn’t resist, then there was no clash and no pain.

However, the downside to not resisting was having someone peek in your soul and seeing everything about you.

After I finished using the Soul Search, I was surprised to find that these people had been serious about not knowing a single thing about the Undead Society.

It was just as they said, they had lived their entire lives in this village. The only times that they went out was when they needed fresh materials for their necromancy and they would never go that far.

So they didn’t even know that much about the wilderness that was around them.

The only thing that they had to do was study the legacy that had been left behind by that necromancer.

This was also the reason why they were fanatics when it came to learning necromancy and why they had been so excited to see the Soul Search spell.

Even if they were fanatics, that didn’t mean that they were talented.

They had only mastered certain spells that had been passed down to them and hadn’t been able to master other spells.

That created a thirst for necromancy knowledge in these people that could only be filled by new knowledge or new spells shown to them.

Once I was done using the Soul Search on Tucker, I didn’t want to stay here any longer.

The Soul Search had allowed me to learn everything about him and it didn’t make me want to stay in this place.

After all, I could feel the way that he felt towards me.

This certainly wasn’t something that I wanted from a grown man like him...

With a cough, I said, "It seems that I was mistaken. I apologize for mistrusting you like this, but I should go now."

It wasn’t just Tucker, all of the other villagers looked disappointed when they heard this.

Then all of a sudden, Tucker said, "You should become our chief."

I couldn’t help looking at him with a strange look.

After all, this man had just offered to step down as chief of the village and to hand this important role to me. I was a person that they didn’t know anything about, the only thing that they knew was my name that I just gave them and the fact that I had helped their children.

That definitely wasn’t enough for them to offer me the role of chief...

But I could also see that the others were looking at me the same way that Tucker was.

They didn’t want me to leave either after seeing me use the Soul Search spell.

It was clear that they wanted to gain more knowledge from me, so they supported giving me the position of chief.

I had never met people that were as naive as them before...

Seeing that I didn’t say anything, Tucker added, "I promise that we’re not dangerous people. If you want, you can use Soul Search on all of us and even use a Soul Bind to make sure that we don’t betray you."

My expression became even more strange when I heard them say this.

I looked at the others of the tribe and it seemed like they were acting the same way as him.

It seemed that I had completely underestimated their fervor for learning more necromancy.

It was almost as if they were even willing to sell their souls if they could...

"If they’re like this, then they would have been fooled by anyone that showed any kind of knowledge in necromancy...In that case, why shouldn’t I accept them?" I couldn’t help slowly convincing myself in the end.

After all, it wasn’t as if there was anything to lose from taking control of this village.

I was looking for a place to stay and build my power, this place really seemed like the best place for that...

In the end, I said with a sigh, "Alright, I can stay here. However, I will be using the Soul Search and Soul Bind spells on all of you as you suggested to make sure that you don’t betray me."

It didn’t seem like they minded this at all.

The moment that they heard this, the eyes of the villagers immediately lit up as if they had been given a reward.

"So you do know the Soul Bind spell..." I heard Tucker mutter under his voice after I said this.

It really felt like I had been baited into admitting this by them, but I maintained my calm.

Though it certainly was hard to maintain that calm when they pushed each other away as if they were rushing to stand in front of me. It really looked like they all wanted to be the first ones to receive this Soul Bind spell from me.

I really didn’t know how to feel when I saw them like this.

"Just what am I getting myself into?" I couldn’t help asking as I watched them line up in front of me.
