CHAPTER 46: 46. TRUTH ABOUT MEI SHEN REAL ORGINS
AT THE SAME TIME
EMEPEROR LIANWEI POINT OF VIEW:
I stood close to the window, watching Mei Shen’s quiet figure bathed in flickering candlelight, when a small tug at my robe pulled me back to the present.
"Huan?" I turned to see my son’s wide, curious eyes looking up at me.
"Papa." He said softly, voice hesitant. "Mei Feng is in the palace."
My heart tightened.
"You saw her?"I asked.
He nodded solemnly, clutching his wooden horse.
"She came with the white haired man."He said.
Zeyrith. The god himself. I knelt down to meet Huan’s gaze, trying to keep my voice calm.
"Did Mei Shen say anything?"I asked.
Huan shook his head.
"She looked... angry. And sad."He said.
A cold wave washed over me. That mixture, anger and sadness was all too familiar. I placed a firm hand on Huan’s shoulder.
"Thank you for telling me, little one. Stay close to your mother, okay?"I asked.
He gave a small nod, his eyes flickering toward the window where Mei Shen still stood, silent and distant. I stood, resolve hardening like forged steel. This presence this shadow from our past threatened everything I held dear. The palace halls felt colder than usual as I made my way to my mother’s chambers. The tension from the courtyard still burned under my skin, and I needed to know what my family thought of this mess. Mother sat by the window, her sharp eyes narrowing as I entered. Grandmother was there too, seated with that calm, iron will that always unnerved me.
"Mother, grandmother." I began, voice steady. "Mei Feng is back."
Mother’s lips pressed into a thin line.
"That woman is trouble. Nothing good will come from her presence."She said.
Grandmother’s eyes flicked with disdain.
"She’s an outsider who stirs chaos. Mei Shen locking herself away again proves she feels threatened. It’s a sign the empress is in turmoil."She said.
"She shut herself in her chambers. Refuses to eat. Says Mei Feng’s here to take everything."I explained.
Mother’s voice dropped, hard as stone.
"We must keep the palace stable. Mei Feng will not be allowed to unravel what we’ve built."She adviced.
Before I could respond, the air shifted around me, chilling to the bone. From the shadows emerged Zeyrith the god of death and rebirth, his pale hair glowing faintly, his eyes unreadable.
"Lianwei Voss." He intoned, voice like a breeze over cold graves. "Your grasp on fate loosens. The story frays at the edges."
I met his gaze without flinching.
"What do you want this time?"I asked, annoyed.
A slow smile curved his lips.
"Only to remind you that the web is vast, and you are but one thread."He said.
The weight of his words pressed down on me like a storm waiting to break. The cold air bit at my skin, but the fury burning inside me was hotter than any winter. I stared down at Zeyrith, his pale face unreadable, his godly calm a provocation.
"Why do you keep meddling in my life, god of death?" I growled, stepping closer, voice low and dangerous. "Are you here to watch me lose everything? To see Mei Shen suffer while you play your games?"
Zeyrith’s eyes gleamed, amused and unyielding.
"You misunderstand me, emperor. I do not cause the chaos, I am the balance. But if you desire Mei Shen’s freedom, you must make sacrifices."He said.
I clenched my fists, every muscle coiled.
"Tell me what."I asked.
The god’s voice softened, almost gentle in its severity.
"Remove the source of her torment. Mei Feng’s presence disrupts the flow. If she is banished sent beyond your kingdom’s borders only then can the path to Mei Shen’s peace begin."He said.
The words hit me like a hammer. My mind raced, but the answer was clear. I would do whatever it took. Within hours, I summoned the court guards. The order was swift and absolute: Mei Feng was to be escorted out of the kingdom. No exceptions. When she was brought before me, defiant but weary, I met her gaze coldly.
"Leave. Your story ends here."I said. "I never want you."
Her eyes flashed with fire, but she did not resist. As the gates closed behind her, a tense silence fell over the palace. For the first time in weeks, I felt a flicker of hope. Mei Shen’s freedom might yet be within reach.
I found Mei Shen in her chamber, pale and fragile, still clutching the edge of her silk robe like it was the last tether to this world. Her eyes flickered up when I entered, wary but tired.
"Mei Shen." I began gently, kneeling beside her. "Mei Feng has been sent away. She will no longer threaten you or our children.’
For a moment, relief softened her features. But then her body stiffened, and her breath hitched sharply.
"No..."She whispered, voice barely audible.
Before I could react, her knees buckled, and she collapsed against me. My heart slammed in panic as I caught her, arms steady but trembling.
"Stay with me." I urged, voice thick. "Don’t leave me."
Her eyes fluttered closed, and cold sweat slicked her forehead. The color drained from her cheeks like a cruel tide. For the first time, fear crashed over me harder than anger or obsession. What did this mean? Why would the news of Mei Feng’s exile break her like this? I pressed my forehead to hers, desperation flooding my veins.
"Mei Shen, please... don’t go."I whispered while holding her tighter in my hands.
The room held its breath as I waited, helpless, for her to respond. The soft rustle of silk announced Madame Renée’s hurried arrival, followed closely by the palace healer, a woman with kind, steady hands and eyes that seemed to see beyond the flesh. She knelt beside Mei Shen, checking her pulse with practiced care.
"She’s weak, but not lost. This fainting spell... it’s more than just shock."She said.
I gripped Mei Shen’s hand tighter, my heart pounding.
"What does she need?"I asked.
The healer’s gaze was firm.
"Complete rest. No visitors, no distractions. Her body is fighting something deeper, stress, exhaustion, perhaps even a lingering curse. Only time and careful care will heal her."Healer explained.
I exchanged a glance with Huan, who stood nearby, small but resolute.
"We won’t leave her side." I said, voice low but certain. "Not now. Not ever."
Huan nodded, climbing onto the edge of the bed and slipping his small hand into hers. For hours, we stayed there, Lianwei and son, silent guardians in the flickering candlelight, watching over Mei Shen’s fragile breath as the night stretched on. Suddenly, a translucent figure flickered into existence, Rosalie, her ghostly form shimmering with a fierce, restless light. Her eyes blazed with anger as they locked onto Zeyrith’s pale, unreadable face.
"You think you can toy with her? With my daughter?" Her voice cracked like thunder, shaking the very air.
Zeyrith’s expression remained calm, but the faintest tension flickered in his gaze.
"Rosalie, your time in the mortal realm is over. Let go of your grief."He said.
"Grief?" She spat, advancing closer. "No. This is fury. This is justice. You gave her life, only to chain her in your cruel game. I will not stand for it."
The god’s voice was soft but firm.
"Fate is a tapestry beyond even your understanding. Mei Shen’s path is intertwined with forces greater than your love."He said.
"Love? If this is love, it’s a prison!" Rosalie’s form pulsed with raw energy, shaking the very walls.
"Free her. Now."
Zeyrith’s gaze hardened.
"There is a price to pay for freedom, Rosalie. Even gods are bound by rules."He said.
She shot him a glare sharp enough to cut stone.
"Then break your own rules. Or I will unravel them for you."Rosalie added.
The air crackled with the power of their clash, a battle of wills between mortal fury and divine order while Mei Shen slept unaware, caught in the storm neither could fully control. The tension in the room thickened, electric and suffocating, as Rosalie’s ghost faced off against Zeyrith. Then, her voice softened, touched by a memory that weighed heavier than any anger.
"She never knew." Rosalie said quietly, eyes fixed on Mei Shen’s sleeping form. "I lived here... in this realm, after I died on Earth. I stayed close, hoping to protect her from afar. I fell in love and gave birth to Mei. But when she was just a child... I passed on again. I never expected to see her here, caught in this cruel story."
A silence fell over the chamber. Even Zeyrith’s unyielding gaze flickered with something like surprise. Rosalie’s voice cracked, burdened with truth no one dared speak aloud.
"Mei Shen’s real father... he’s here. Not the emperor, not the tyrant she fled from, but someone else. Someone who made the god bring her to Earth, erase her memories, hide her from this fate."She said.
The room reeled with the weight of her confession. My mind raced, trying to grasp the impossible.
’Who?" I demanded, voice sharp with shock and suspicion.
Rosalie’s ghost turned her blazing eyes on me.
"He’s not a god. Not one you know. A forgotten force who wanted her safe, far from the empire’s claws."She said.
Zeyrith’s pale face darkened, the god’s calm shattered for the first time.
"You meddle with threads you cannot control." He hissed.
"But I only want her free." Rosalie replied fiercely. "Free from you, from your chains, from this twisted fate."
I looked down at Mei Shen again, so fragile, so broken. This revelation shifted something inside me. If her past was not what I believed, if her story was tangled in secrets deeper than any court intrigue, then everything was at stake.
"Tell me everything." I said, voice steady but heavy. "No more lies. No more shadows."
Rosalie’s form shimmered, and for the first time, her anger softened into something raw and aching.
"For her to live, to love, to be free... you must rewrite the story. But rewriting comes at a price."She said.
I clenched my jaw.
"Then I’ll pay it."I said.
The god’s eyes locked onto mine, cold and merciless.
"Very well, emperor. The game has changed. But beware the cost may be more than you can bear."He said.
As the night deepened, the battle between gods, ghosts, and mortals hung poised on a knife’s edge. And in the silence, I vowed one thing, no matter the cost, Mei Shen would be free and happy.
