I Am Cultivating in the Apocalypse
Chapter 115: Conqueror F Type Off-road RV
CHAPTER 115: CONQUEROR F TYPE OFF-ROAD RV
Yang Yang turned his face to look at the pitch-black sky and said, "It’s in the United States."
Jing Shu: "???"
Yang Yang looked at the bewildered Jing Shu, coughed, and said,
"That’s right, it’s still in the United States. Military vehicles aren’t something an ordinary person can buy. The top model sells for 13 million, a German MAN, 8X8 Conqueror F-type off-road RV, equipped with a MAN 6-cylinder 24-valve inline turbocharged engine..."
Before Yang Yang could continue, Jing Shu excitedly shouted,
"Is it the one with the non-load-bearing chassis with a fording depth of 1.83 meters, capable of snow mode, desert mode, and swamp mode with all-terrain tires, a lift-up grand terrace on the roof, a solar power system at the front of the roof, a rugged and imposing military appearance, made of ultra-high-strength fiberglass material, and an interior so luxurious it includes a lavish terrace capable of hosting pool parties?"
Yang Yang gave a thumbs up. "You’re quite informed. Yes, that’s the one. We have them in Huaxia too, but they’re all spoken for. Moreover, the one in the United States is this year’s new top-of-the-line model, and the price I can get it for is much, much cheaper than what it would cost to get one here."
Jing Shu dug at her ear. "Wait, wait, wait... what did you say just before?"
"I said German MAN..."
"The sentence before that."
"Military vehicles aren’t something that..."
"The sentence before that."
"It’s in the United States..."
Jing Shu blew on the pinky finger she had used to clean her ear. "Right, that’s the sentence. So, are you just feeding me a pie in the sky, making me dream about it? How could I possibly get it from the United States? It’s halfway across the globe; do you expect the car to fly back on a plane?"
Seriously, these two places are half a world apart! It wouldn’t have been easy to bring something like that back even before the apocalypse, let alone after. How capable would one have to be? If I had that kind of power, I’d have ascended to the heavens long ago!
Jing Shu had been as excited as if she were on a roller coaster, almost jumping with joy, especially knowing that Yang Yang could actually help her get such a luxurious vehicle.
In my previous life, I learned about this vehicle by chance in the sixth year of the apocalypse. I was migrating to Sichuan and saw someone driving it from a distance. The sight of that robust vehicle traversing the pitted, snowy terrain and ascending the Great Snow Mountain had left me in awe.
When the snow was piled higher than a person, all electric vehicles would become useless. The only advantage was that they could still follow the paths cleared by the army. That RV, however, seemed to defy the laws of physics; it climbed straight up vertically... It was agile, not like a cumbersome giant—ahem, not like a typical RV.
In this life, I had originally planned that by the time of the migration, my storage space would be upgraded enough to hold my BYD Song. I could drive where possible and store the car in my space where it wasn’t.
So, I wasn’t interested in ordinary RVs. Why?
Because in the years following the apocalypse, the earth’s conditions would only worsen. The world map itself would have completely changed, and road conditions would be so terrible that there would essentially be no drivable roads. Even if I had an RV, what good would it be against deserts, swamps, and vast snowy mountain ranges? Could you even drive across them?
Besides, with fuel rationing in place, while you might be able to recharge electric vehicles if you stayed put, once you began migrating, you wouldn’t last a day without needing to stop and find a power source. Of course, those with connections could still get gasoline or diesel, but it would come at a steep price.
But if I had this all-terrain RV, climbing, traversing, no matter how bad the environment, it wouldn’t be an issue! And most importantly, how wonderful would it be to sleep comfortably at 20 degrees Celsius inside the RV when it’s minus 50 degrees Celsius outside? The extreme cold was a major reason so many people died during migrations.
Back then, I had researched the German MAN off-road RV and was utterly amazed by its various features.
Its exterior was pitch-black, resembling a massive freight truck—rugged and low-profile—but the interior was unbelievably luxurious. I especially loved the elevating terrace. It even came with a swimming pool that could be converted into a water storage tank, and the terrace itself could be modified for growing vegetables, raising small animals, and so on.
In my previous life, I wouldn’t have even dared to dream of owning one. Yet, in this life, I actually had information about this vehicle!
Only... it was still just a target, an item on a wishlist. And it was in the United States.
Heh.
After all that, it seemed I was still just dreaming.
Jing Shu’s heart turned cold, and she instantly lost all enthusiasm. Yang Yang said I had to get it back myself. Did he mean I’m supposed to go to the United States and steal an RV? But my storage space can’t even hold such a large vehicle right now! It seems I’ll have to wait a few years and try to get it before the great migration begins.
That’s why they say a woman’s mood changes faster than one can flip through a book. One moment she was full of excitement and thrill, and a few seconds later, Jing Shu’s expression became utterly downcast.
Yang Yang certainly couldn’t have known that in those few seconds, Jing Shu’s mind had already raced through the entire scenario: obtaining the RV, figuring out how to modify it, and even imagining her life with it during the apocalypse, only for all that to be replaced by the crushing disappointment of realizing she couldn’t get her hands on it.
"To be honest with you," Yang Yang continued, "for this secret mission, we have to rely entirely on ourselves. We go on our own, we return on our own. If the mission fails, then the person Yang Yang will cease to exist in Huaxia. And even if we succeed, no one will throw us a celebratory banquet.
"No matter what trouble we stir up, even if our identities are exposed and we die in a foreign land, the higher-ups won’t care about us, nor can they. Therefore, the RV will be part of our escape plan, a guarantee for our survival. When the mission is complete, we’ll ship it to Huaxia.
"What I mean is, I can get the RV to within Huaxia’s borders for you. Beyond that, I’m powerless; you’ll have to figure out how to get it the rest of the way yourself. And let me be clear beforehand: we won’t have any diesel or gasoline either. Once we’re in the United States, we’ll also have to scavenge for our own daily necessities. Getting it inside Huaxia’s borders is the absolute most we can do."
Jing Shu’s eyes gradually lit up, shining like little stars in the sky. Yang Yang thought he saw an expression of extreme excitement on her face.
Meanwhile, Jing Shu’s mind was racing. If the RV was in the United States, it would indeed be impossible for me to get it back. It would be more realistic to consider getting this model from within Huaxia.
But if it was already within Huaxia’s borders... although it wouldn’t fit in my storage space, and there would be all sorts of surveillance, plus a vehicle that large would definitely need to be acquired through legitimate means... that meant I’d have to obtain it via official channels!
"Wait a minute..." Jing Shu suddenly grasped an unusual piece of information. With her keen perception, she asked, "Are you saying it’ll be shipped through customs? Are you guys planning to bring something else back from the United States this time? Otherwise, just for those missions and a single RV... that wouldn’t be enough justification to arrange an entire sea shipment, would it? You must be transporting other things as well, right?"
Indeed. How much clout would it take to ship a single RV across the ocean from the United States on a massive cargo ship? They were definitely shipping *my* RV, but it was just an incidental part of a larger consignment.
Yang Yang raised an eyebrow. "Quite smart. We do have to bring some things back. You’ll find out when the time comes. First, just tell me if you want the RV or not. I can bring it back for you on the side. Let’s get one thing straight, though: the mission has no set timeframe. It could take months, even longer, or we might never return. If that happens, your payment goes down the drain."
