CHAPTER 129: CHAPTER 129: YOU DON’T RECOGNIZE ME ANYMORE
A handkerchief with a light blue checkered border was then extended toward her.
"Thank you!"
Vera Wave took the offered handkerchief, blinked several times, and the tears clinging to her eyelashes slid down. The blurry figure before her finally came into focus.
Standing before her was a man in his thirties, dressed in a graphite-grey suit. Beneath his short hair, his handsome, angular face appeared somewhat stern.
However, at that moment, the eyes beneath his sharp eyebrows were filled with warmth as they watched her with concern.
Upon seeing the man’s face clearly, confusion seeped into Vera’s tear-filled eyes.
"Who are you...?"
His face looked vaguely familiar, as if she had seen him somewhere before, though she couldn’t quite place him.
"Vera, you... you don’t recognize me?" The man’s brows furrowed. "I’m Nathan Leafcastle!"
Nathan Leafcastle?!
Hearing this familiar-sounding name, Vera thought carefully and finally remembered who he was.
"I know now, I’ve seen your picture!"
Nathan Leafcastle was the son of her father’s good friend. They had grown up together, but after his parents divorced, he moved to Australia with his mother.
Vera had, naturally, long forgotten those early days. She only had a vague impression of Nathan Leafcastle from some old photographs and stories her father and grandmother had shared.
Nathan’s expression turned somber when he noticed her clearly unfamiliar gaze.
"It’s like... you don’t remember me at all?"
"I’m sorry!" Vera gave him an apologetic smile. "I... I was in a car accident a few years ago, so I don’t remember the past very well. Please don’t take it to heart. Actually, I know quite a lot about you. My grandma often mentions you. She said you were a straight-A student, highly intelligent, and that you always took good care of me. By the way, weren’t you in Australia? Why are you here?"
"The company appointed me as the head in charge of the Asia region, and I’m here in Nicosa to take up my post!" Nathan Leafcastle explained.
"I see!" Vera responded with a smile. "You’re truly amazing, being the head in charge of an entire region at such a young age."
Nathan Leafcastle brushed it off with a light laugh. "And you... what brings you here?"
"Oh, I... I’m just here to take care of a few things," Vera said evasively.
Although she knew they were childhood acquaintances, Vera had long since lost those memories. To her, Nathan Leafcastle was now just a stranger, and she naturally couldn’t bring herself to confide her personal matters to him so easily.
Noticing the wariness in her eyes, Nathan Leafcastle didn’t press further.
"It’s not often we run into each other like this. How about... we grab a meal together?"
Vera hesitated slightly, but Nathan had already turned and started walking towards the stairs.
"Let’s go, my car is just downstairs." He took a few steps, then turned to Vera, who was still standing there. "Vera, are you coming?"
His tone was remarkably natural and warm, as if their years of closeness had made their interactions effortlessly familiar.
As a result, Vera found it somewhat hard to refuse. She walked over, offering a smile. "Since we’re already here, why don’t I treat you?"
A faint smile touched Nathan Leafcastle’s lips. "Let’s discuss it in the car!"
They walked down the steps together, where a car was already waiting at the bottom. Nathan Leafcastle personally opened the car door for Vera, and they both settled into the backseat.
"Mr. Leafcastle, where are we going?" the driver asked from the front seat.
After a moment’s thought, Nathan Leafcastle replied, "I haven’t had the local snacks here in a while. Let’s go to the Second Ring area. I remember a very authentic Snack Bar there; it should still be open."
