CHAPTER 23: CHAPTER 23: THIS TIME YOU’VE WALKED INTO A TRAP (1)

Arranging the resume in her hand, Vera Wave looked herself up and down again, made sure there was nothing inappropriate, and then raised her hand.

CLICK!

Before she could knock, the door was pulled open from the inside, and a female staff member in her thirties appeared before Vera.

"Hello!" Vera quickly smiled. "Excuse me, I’m here for an interview at the Publicity Department. Is this the right office?"

The female staff member looked her up and down. "Come in."

"Thank you!" Vera followed the woman into the office and closed the door behind her.

Not far away, Kris Cooper slightly raised his eyebrows.

So, she’s here for an interview,

he thought. How strange. Why would she apply to the Publicity Department? As far as he knew, the company’s Publicity Department was a small division under the Administration Department. It usually handled some internal promotions related to corporate culture and didn’t involve any particularly valuable work. He had actually planned to eliminate this department and merge its tasks into the Administration Department.

Raising his eyebrows, he strode over and quietly pressed his ear against the door panel.

Inside the room, Vera politely placed her resume before the woman, her gaze scanning the badge on the woman’s chest.

The badge clearly read: Administration Publicity Department, Sabella Edwards.

There was no job title written below the name. Vera pondered for a moment and then, smiling sweetly, she spoke.

"Manager Edwards, this is my resume. I was wondering, what kinds of positions are you looking to fill in this department?"

Being called Manager Edwards made Sabella feel quite pleased. After all, she was the only one in the Publicity Department, so she supposed that made her a manager, right?

"This position? Well, we don’t have specific roles defined at the moment. I just need an assistant. If you join, you can be my direct deputy," she said, flipping through the papers in her hand. "You only have an associate degree?"

"Yes."

"And... you haven’t graduated yet?"

"That’s right, it’s my final year—my internship period." Vera knew her educational qualifications weren’t high, so she tried her best to appear compliant. "But please rest assured, I do have work experience, and I’m a very hard worker. If you hire me, I’ll definitely give it my all and won’t disappoint you."

Actually, Sabella didn’t have much in the way of serious work. The Administration Department always handed her the dirtiest and most tiring tasks. She was simply too swamped to handle it all, which was why she had applied to hire an assistant.

Seeing that Vera was young and seemed inexperienced, Sabella thought, This little girl will surely be obedient and easy to manage. And so, she smiled.

Sabella had never held any real power. Although she very much wanted to hire Vera, she didn’t dare make the decision on her own.

"Alright, you seem quite intelligent. I’ll keep your resume here. We’ll review it, and then I’ll notify you."

Seeing a good chance for the job, Vera’s smile grew even sweeter. "Okay, thank you so much! My phone number is on the resume. You can call me anytime; I keep my phone on 24/7."

"Alright, then you can go home and wait for our news!" Sabella waved her off. Vera thanked her again, then turned and walked out of the office, heading joyfully towards the elevator. She immediately took out her phone to call Isla Hawskin. "Isla, it’s Vera! The interview’s over. They told me to wait for their decision, and I think it’s pretty much a sure thing!"

"That’s great! Then I’ll see you at the company."

"Okay."

Pressing the elevator button, Vera slipped her phone back into her pocket, already mulling over her prospects.

If this job application is successful, I’ll take some time to collect my commission from Eden. A few thousand USD should be enough to tide me over until I get my first paycheck here. Thinking about her livelihood being secured, her spirits lifted considerably.
