CHAPTER 24: CHAPTER 24: THIS TIME YOU’VE WALKED INTO A TRAP (2)
After a moment, the elevator doors parted, and Vera walked in, completely unaware of the pair of eyes stealthily watching her from behind.
Watching her elevator descend, only then did Kris Cooper straighten up from around the corner of the corridor.
"Naughty girl, you’ve walked right into the trap this time!"
...
...
By the time Vera left the Skywalk Building and returned to her old, rented one-bedroom apartment in the Peaceful District, it was already dusk.
The first thing Vera did upon returning home was plug in her phone to charge, ensuring she wouldn’t miss any calls. With that done, she casually tossed her bag onto the sofa before throwing herself down onto it as well.
She hadn’t rested all day, running around from morning till night, and she was thoroughly exhausted.
After resting against the back of the sofa for a while, she reached for a takeout menu on the coffee table.
Having been pampered like a young lady since childhood, she was never adept at cooking. She mostly relied on takeout for her three daily meals.
It was a takeout menu from a fast-food restaurant downstairs that offered noodles and rice bowls. She glanced at it, but when her eyes fell on the prices, she set the menu down, stood up, and walked into the kitchen.
After paying for lunch at Pizza Hut, her purse was almost empty. Her guiding principle now was to save money wherever she could.
Inside the refrigerator’s crisper drawer, there were only a few eggs and two cartons of milk. She then opened the main refrigeration compartment; it was even emptier than the crisper.
Staring at the empty refrigerator compartment, she suddenly remembered: she had finished off the last packet of frozen vegetarian dumplings the night before last.
She closed the refrigerator door and looked around the kitchen.
The entire kitchen was bare; there weren’t even any seasonings on the stovetop. It was no wonder, given that she never cooked and therefore wouldn’t waste money on such things.
Spotting a box of instant noodles to the side, her eyes lit up. She hurried over and flipped open the lid.
Thank goodness, there’s still one packet of instant noodles left! I’ll just boil two eggs to go with it, and that’ll be a complete meal, she thought with relief.
She set to work immediately, taking out the kettle and starting to boil water. Just as she was about to tear open the packet of noodles, her ears picked up her phone ringing.
Overjoyed, Vera, still clutching the packet of instant noodles, rushed over and answered her phone.
"Hello, this is Vera Wave."
"Am I speaking with Ms. Wave? This is the Skywalk Building. We’ve reviewed your resume and believe you are a very good fit for our company’s requirements. However, as the Public Relations Department is one of our most important departments, we require you to come in for another interview. Are you available tomorrow morning?"
"Yes, yes, of course! I’m available anytime. What time should I come?"
"Would ten o’clock in the morning work for you?"
"Okay, that’s no problem. Do I need to bring any documents or anything like that?"
On the other end of the line, Tommy Taylor glanced inquiringly at the young boss sitting opposite him.
Kris Cooper grabbed a pen and quickly wrote a few words on paper—ID Card!
"You don’t need to bring anything else, just your ID card."
"Okay, thank you."
"You’re welcome. Goodbye." Tommy Taylor turned off the speakerphone, then looked up at Kris Cooper. "Is there anything else that needs to be done?"
Kris Cooper lazily propped his feet up on the desk.
"Prepare an employment contract. As for the term..." He raised a hand and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Ten years."
Tommy frowned slightly. "This... Isn’t this against regulations? Our company’s contracts are typically for five years."
Kris Cooper looked up at him, grinning.
"Tommy, do you think your salary is a bit too high?"
Tommy chuckled nervously. "Definitely not."
