CHAPTER 36: CHAPTER 36 A DATE WITH A BEAUTIFUL LADY (2)

From large items needing repair or replacement, like printers and copiers, to small ones like pens and sticky notes...all kinds of necessary office supplies were available.

Even though it was located just one level below the top floor, the 31st, the back office felt like an unloved stepchild, occupying the worst office space and doing the dirtiest and most tiring jobs.

The girl, seeing Vera Wave’s attire, assumed she was from another department coming to get supplies, and hurriedly spoke politely.

"What would you like? Just give us a call, and we’ll deliver it to you. There’s no need for you to come here personally."

"Oh, no, I’m here to report for duty."

"Report for duty?!"

Upon hearing these words, both the middle-aged woman and the girl were taken aback.

Considering Vera Wave’s appearance and aura, she looked every bit a high-level white-collar professional. How could she have been assigned to their godforsaken back office?!

Noticing their surprise, Vera didn’t say anything. Instead, she politely extended her hand to the girl.

"Hello, my name is Vera Wave. I look forward to working with you."

"Oh, hello..." The girl reached out to shake Vera’s hand but, noticing the dust on her own, hurriedly pulled it back. "Sorry, my hands are dirty. My name is Yola Dowry—everyone calls me Yola. And this is Ms. Song, our department head."

"Ms. Song, hello." Vera again extended her hand toward Ms. Song.

"Hello, hello." Ms. Song shook Vera’s hand, clearly feeling somewhat awkward and flustered.

In the back office, they were used to being ordered around by people from various departments. Being suddenly treated so politely by Vera, Ms. Song was rather discomfited.

"So..." Vera looked around. "What will I be responsible for?"

"Well..." Ms. Song glanced hesitantly at Vera’s stylish dress and high heels. "In our department, we’re always running around. You might want to wear something more comfortable tomorrow."

Just as she finished speaking, the phone on the table rang.

Yola hurried over to answer it. "Marker pens... five boxes. Okay, we’ll send them right away."

Hanging up, she grabbed the marker pens from the shelf and rushed out like a gust of wind.

No sooner had Yola left than the phone rang again. With Ms. Song busy with accounts nearby, Vera took the initiative to answer it.

"Hello, back office."

"Deliver a pack of paper."

With just those few words, the caller dismissed her and hung up.

Vera held the receiver, still somewhat stunned.

"They didn’t even mention which floor?!"

Ms. Song leaned over and glanced at the number displayed on the phone.

"The 28th floor, Planning Department. You’re new and unfamiliar with things; I’ll go!"

As she spoke, she hurriedly scooped up a pack of paper and ran out.

Vera looked around and finally understood: their so-called back office was basically an errands department.

It seems I’ll really need to wear flat shoes and pants tomorrow if I’m going to be suitable for this work.

With this in mind, Vera walked over to some boxes and began to sort the newly purchased office supplies, placing them into different drawers or compartments by category.

Just as she was halfway through, the telephone rang yet again.

She hurried to answer. This time, having learned her lesson, she quickly noted down the extension number displayed on the phone’s screen: 2808.

"Six cups of Starbucks Coffee, as usual!"

The voice on the other end was that of an arrogant woman.

Before Vera could explain that she was new and didn’t understand what "as usual" entailed, the caller had already hung up.

Vera quickly dialed back the extension.

However, the line was busy.

She tried again, but the line was still busy.
