I am the Zombie King of the Apocalyptic World
Chapter 1855 - 1848: Inspection Duty
CHAPTER 1855: CHAPTER 1848: INSPECTION DUTY
As Tang Ye approached the entrance of the Construction base, all the soldiers inside and outside entered a state of combat readiness, with a large number of soldiers gathering behind the blue divider! From behind the divider, dozens of strong advanced humans wielding cold weapons leaped forth, each one glaring menacingly at Tang Ye!
Yet Tang Ye did not pause. At that moment, a man who looked like an officer picked up a megaphone and began a countdown. Suddenly, Tang Ye accelerated, appearing in front of one of the soldiers as if by teleportation. Seeing this, the officer abruptly changed his countdown from "three" to "open fire!"
But how could the soldiers react in time?
The scene was chaotic for a moment as the soldiers looked around. When they finally located Tang Ye, they were at a loss for what to do.
The air was frozen for a few seconds. The soldier in front of Tang Ye stared blankly at the credentials in his hand. After coming to his senses, the soldier quickly jogged into the Construction base, approached the officer, and whispered something into his ear. Once he finished, the officer withdrew his hand and shouted, "Everyone, put down your weapons!"
After speaking, he ran up to Tang Ye and solemnly saluted.
"Sir!"
Tang Ye nodded at him and put away the proof he had shown.
This thing was indeed useful and effective.
The officer, watching Tang Ye’s actions and pondering for a moment, eventually still asked, "May I ask, you came here to...?"
"To kill some unruly people?" Tang Ye replied without hesitation. Upon hearing this, the other did not ask anything more, nodded straightforwardly, gestured, and shouted to the surrounding soldiers, "Everyone, you have ten seconds! Return to your original positions."
Although the soldiers were somewhat puzzled, military orders are like a mountain; they dared not disobey the officer’s command, no matter how curious they were. They could only follow his words to the letter.
Soon, all the soldiers returned to their original positions; the advanced humans who had previously leapt out from behind the divider, ready for combat at any moment, also returned one after another. Seeing that everything was restored to its original order, the officer stepped aside slightly to give way to Tang Ye, making a gesture of "please."
Tang Ye said no more and walked into the Construction base.
Looking around, the most striking feature was a massive "pit" inside, where tall drilling equipment operated relentlessly. Countless workers, bare-chested and revealing muscular physiques, worked vigorously amidst a rain of yellow mud, sweating profusely. Naturally, some looked over curiously, puzzled as to why Tang Ye was holding a knife?
He looked quite intimidating, but the workers here were just ordinary people; whatever Tang Ye intended to do, they naturally didn’t think it had anything to do with them.
After glancing around, Tang Ye raised his eyebrows slightly several times, for reasons unknown, before suddenly retracting the long knife in his hand. The two-meter-long blade was slowly inserted into his pocket, without any part of the blade protruding from the pants, drawing frequent sidelong glances from the surrounding onlookers at this bizarre sheathing method.
Even the officer was stunned for a good while, looking back and forth between Tang Ye’s hand and his pocket. The knife was longer than he was tall by a good segment, yet he couldn’t fathom how Tang Ye managed to fully sheath this strange knife into his pants without it showing.
As he was lost in thought, a young soldier, looking in his twenties, approached with a mischievous grin and asked, "Brother Wang, who was that just now? He didn’t seem to be an advanced human, just looked like a regular person..."
The officer snapped back to reality as the other spoke and was reminded of other matters. He cast a glance at the young soldier, with whom he shared a good relationship; had it been anyone else, they wouldn’t dare come so close and question him.
However, even to this familiar young soldier, he wouldn’t disclose Tang Ye’s identity.
Since Su Sigui evolved into a Level 9 new human and became the authority of the Cloud Gorge Base, the base was bustling with renewal. The Twelve Departments’ power was entirely reshuffled, newly established, and purged the remnants left by previous council members with bloody means, deeply ingraining the Twelve Departments into the people’s consciousness.
Common people only knew Su Sigui as the deity above the Twelve Departments, but only those like them knew that above the Twelve Departments, below Su Sigui, there was a more mysterious department, like a Sword of Damocles suspended over everyone’s heads, deterring any reckless actions.
It wielded immense power, second only to Su Sigui, to deal with anyone, at any time, place, or reason!
Yet from beginning to end, this mysterious department, neither he nor others had ever seen someone belonging to it in person.
The soldier had told him about, left him in a bit of disarray; it wasn’t that he didn’t want to verify the authenticity of the credential, it was because the credentials Tang Ye showed bore Su Sigui’s exclusive stamp.
"I warn you, don’t mess around until that person is gone; otherwise..."
"Wha... What happened..." Hearing the seriousness in the officer’s words, the young soldier’s expression stiffened. Although he was on good terms with the officer, he understood him well, knowing that while they chatted casually, once the officer became angry, it was more terrifying than a zombie.
This was definitely not an idle threat!
"If he wants to kill you, not only will I not plead for you, but I will also take action myself."
"No way, Brother Wang?"
"If you don’t want to die, then just work earnestly."
After sending the young soldier off, the officer known as Brother Wang shook his head somewhat helplessly and finally entered a tent at the back, retrieved a palm-sized electronic device, and made his way toward Tang Ye.
"Sir."
On the other side, upon hearing someone call his name, Tang Ye turned his head to see Brother Wang coming toward him.
"Hmm?"
"Sir, this is the command communicator. If you need anything, you can contact us at any time," the officer said respectfully.
Tang Ye glanced at the device in his hand but shook his head: "No need, you can come with me; I want to have a good look around, and if there is something I don’t understand, I will ask you."
"This... Sir, weren’t you here to kill?" Brother Wang asked in confusion. Tang Ye nodded but quickly shook his head: "I was, but not anymore. Change the task from killing to inspection."
"Alright then." Brother Wang nodded, put away the communicator, and quietly followed Tang Ye like an old servant.
Tang Ye’s gaze swept through all the corners; some people worked diligently while others loafed around. On the surface, these workers seemed to live well, chatting and laughing during work and engaging in family banter, mixed with the noise from the massive machines.
However, amidst this harmonious atmosphere, a small group of "people" seemed completely out of place, each one silent, their hands never ceasing action, like emotionless working machines.
