I can upgrade the shelter

CHAPTER 570: CHAPTER 468: STEALING HALF A DAY OF LEISURE
The success of the experiment finally allowed Chen Xin to relax and take a break temporarily.
Although there was still a lot of work to do, giving himself half a day’s vacation to have a good rest was still possible.
It’s just that he was currently in Lucia, staying at a base from the Soviet era. Even though it had been upgraded and remodeled before, some of the interior still had a strong Soviet flavor, making it not very comfortable to live in, and lacking entertainment facilities.
Of course, for Chen Xin, even giving himself half a day off didn’t mean he could really go out and have fun.
When he was at his own home shelter, during his leisure time, Chen Xin would play games, chat with Mo Qingyan and Qin Lan, or accompany his parents.
But in a place like the former Soviet base in Lucia, the only way for Chen Xin to spend a rare free afternoon was to take a stroll in the greenhouse.
This greenhouse was converted from an existing warehouse in the base, using Flame Country’s latest modular eco-capsule planting technology. The pre-assembled greenhouse capsules were transported here from the homeland and directly assembled for use, instead of converting a warehouse into a greenhouse.
This technology does not fall within the scope of Flame Country’s aid to Lucia. Although exporting a few capsules was not a big deal, the technical support provided by Flame Country to Lucia still focused on helping them build permanent greenhouses, not these removable capsule greenhouses.
This decision was not made by Chen Xin, but was a decision from the domestic side, so Chen Xin did not bother to delve into the reasons, knowing that having one for their own use was all that mattered.
A single capsule greenhouse is not very large, only about the size of a traditional shipping container, but when several containers are connected together, the capsule greenhouse becomes quite large.
Inside, there were a large variety of fresh vegetables, as well as fruits and staple crops. While the yield wasn’t abundant, it was enough to sustain the consumption of the people in the base.
The main reason Chen Xin came here was to get some fresh vegetables and fruits, so he could cook something himself.
For Chen Xin, spending time on culinary arts is always the best way to relax and unwind.
Each container in the container-style capsule greenhouse is an independent unit. They can exist independently, running autonomously for a long time under the power from the Isotope Battery, relying on eco-technology. Other than necessary management, they require little maintenance.
Originally, this was a capsule planting technology used by the military, developed to provide vegetables and fruits for outposts in remote, adverse environments like plateaus and snowy mountains.
With the support from various black technologies Chen Xin acquired through the system, this technology also evolved into the current container-style greenhouse, which is easier to maintain, with higher yields, and more varieties than before.
Although each greenhouse is an independent unit, the design initially considered the use of multiple containers together, so each container greenhouse was pre-designed with connecting passages.
There are even staircases set up inside the containers, allowing two containers to be stacked for use, greatly saving space.
Chen Xin was very fond of this kind of container greenhouse. If he had this technology before the disaster, he would have definitely built one for himself when constructing his own shelter.
In fact, after this technology was formed, it was vigorously promoted domestically.
Apart from the fact that it’s not very convenient to use this technology in some existing shelters, many rebuilt shelters after the Southwest Region earthquake adopted this technology.
This container-style greenhouse is integrally formed, structurally solid, with special seismic resistance designed internally, it can withstand earthquakes above magnitude seven. In addition to providing vegetables, fruits, and grains for shelters, it can also be used as a safe space to avoid earthquakes.
This design choice was largely influenced by the many issues exposed by the previous major earthquake in the Southwest Region.
Shelters are supposed to resist disasters, serving as emergency refuges for civilians during disasters. However, the assault from the earthquake turned the originally sheltering function of the shelter into a risk, which was undoubtedly difficult to accept.
So during the reconstruction process, besides enhancing the shockproof capabilities of each shelter, specially reinforced and stabilized safety points were designed for emergency refuge within the shelters during disasters.
The choice of planting greenhouses was mostly due to the consideration of food supply issues.
After all, being buried in the ruins is not the scariest thing. As long as there is some space and one isn’t completely trapped, one can manage to survive with food and water until rescue arrives.
Therefore, greenhouses capable of providing food and potentially water became a great choice.
Especially since the container greenhouses have independent power systems, and the plants inside provide essential oxygen through photosynthesis.
Of course, despite the many benefits, nobody genuinely hopes to ever have to use these features—to this day, the biggest function of these container greenhouses is still producing crops.
Chen Xin walked through a container greenhouse, went to the bottom, climbed the stairs leading to the upper container, and gazed at the plentiful vegetables and fruits inside these container greenhouses, feeling a sense of happiness welling up within him.
Here, one could basically find most of the common vegetables from before the disaster. There are also a small number of easily grown and harvested fruits. In this post-apocalyptic setting, the sense of security and happiness brought by owning such a container greenhouse is incomparable to even owning an entire estate before the disaster.
Being well-fed has always been humanity’s most pressing need, and eating well is always the top pursuit.
Chen Xin picked some vegetables and fruits and put them in a basket. Although there was no meat, these vegetables and fruits were enough for him to showcase his skills and make a sumptuous meal.
As Chen Xin carried the vegetables and fruits on his way back, he suddenly recalled the caviar he saw at a banquet held by the people of Lucia.
In fact, in a certain sense, these vegetables and fruits are more luxurious than caviar. After all, maintaining a few fish versus maintaining a greenhouse that can consistently produce vegetables and fruits—it’s really hard to say which is more extravagant.
Chen Xin touched his nose, cast aside these unnecessary thoughts, and reached into the basket to grab a fresh tomato, taking a bite straight out of it.
The sweet and sour juice permeated his mouth, bringing forth a reassuring satisfaction.
