CHAPTER 250: CHAPTER 250: NOT ONE TO BE REASONED WITH
What scheme is Vera Yates plotting again? The assistant shivered, feeling it might be time to find an opportunity to inform Sienna Quinn about this.
Seeing the assistant nod, Vera Yates nodded with satisfaction. She was already aware from the previous conversation with Mrs. Vance that the family had begun to suppress the rumors fully. These three months were the last chance the Vance Family had given her, and the last chance for the Vance Family to climb the ladder through Landon Lawson.
This plan, if not successful, would be the end.
"Call him, why are you just sitting there dazing?" Vera Yates rolled her eyes, frustrated at how she ended up with such a clueless assistant.
The assistant was startled but quickly made the call to Landon Lawson after responding with a couple of anxious acknowledgments.
"President Lawson, hello, I’m Miss Vance’s assistant. Her situation isn’t good right now. I just went to her place, and she almost took sleeping pills, but I stopped her. She said the pressure is so overwhelming she’s struggling to go on, with criticisms and condemnations everywhere."
The assistant spoke cautiously, sneaking glances at Vera Yates, terrified of saying something wrong that might upset her.
Vera’s lips curled; she didn’t expect the assistant to be so good at lying.
After hanging up, Vera Yates looked anxiously at the assistant, "So? What did Stephen say?"
"He’s going to your apartment right now."
"What? Hurry up, what are you waiting for!" Vera Yates hurriedly wore her sunglasses and rushed out, afraid to be caught by Landon Lawson if she delayed. Meanwhile, the assistant typed on the screen to inform Sienna Quinn.
When Landon Lawson arrived at Vera Yates’ place, fifteen minutes had already passed. He didn’t know how many red lights he ran through or how fast he was driving.
He pushed open the door and saw Vera Yates before him, pale with bloodless lips. Landon Lawson scolded with a darkened face, "What on earth are you doing?"
The man was out of breath from rushing, sweating on his forehead. Vera Yates felt a warmth in her heart; she knew these five years beside him couldn’t have been devoid of feelings. Landon Lawson had her in his heart; he simply didn’t realize it.
Her dry lips stretched into a wide smile, her voice hoarse, "Stephen... sorry for making you worry."
"What are you talking about? If you knew I’d worry, why do this?"
"I’m so tired, all the rumors are aimed at me, I’m like a rat in the street, condemned by everyone."
Vera Yates lowered her head, laughing mockingly with a hint of desolation in her eyes.
Landon Lawson frowned; he had heard the rumors about Vera Yates and knew what she was facing. For five years, Vera Yates stayed free of scandals because of his help. But... but he couldn’t continue like this now.
Sienna Quinn had returned, repeatedly misunderstanding Landon Lawson’s feelings for Vera Yates. From Evan Quinn, she learned that Sienna had been keeping tabs on him from abroad for five years, knowing Vera Yates was his nominal girlfriend, deepening misunderstandings. He couldn’t let them deepen; Sienna, stubborn as she was, wouldn’t be easily swayed.
With a light cough, "You’re an adult. Would you end your life over a few words from others? I never thought you were this fragile in the past."
Vera Yates gave a bitter smile, lightly shaking her head, "Stephen, I’m not as strong as you think."
She turned her gaze out the window, her eyes becoming hollow, a pitiful look artfully portrayed by Vera Yates.
"Everything will pass; don’t act impulsively," Landon Lawson advised.
Vera Yates nodded, stood up, and leaned gently against Landon Lawson’s chest, inhaling the scent around her nose, relishing the long-awaited embrace, her heart blooming with joy.
Landon Lawson stayed motionless, allowing Vera Yates to hold him but neither pushing her away nor embracing her.
"Stephen, thank you for caring about me."
Landon Lawson’s brows furrowed slightly as he said, "I’ve always seen you as a sister. How could I not care about you?"
Sister?
These words struck like a heavy hammer to Vera Yates’ chest, her face turning an awful shade. Even now, Landon Lawson still saw her as a sister. Did she hold no place in his heart?
With little hands gripping Landon Lawson’s shirt tightly, her body trembled constantly, the already pale lips now bore teeth marks from biting hard.
Feeling the trembling woman in his arms, Landon Lawson knew his words might hurt her, but he couldn’t let her continue her infatuation. It would only delay her life and cause Sienna, that jealous girl, to misunderstand further.
He had just regained his wife and son; he couldn’t drive them away again out of anger.
He gripped Vera Yates by the shoulders, looking directly into her eyes, "You are a good girl."
"I... I understand now."
Vera Yates smiled self-mockingly, her face alarmingly pale.
Landon Lawson instructed the assistant to take good care of Vera Yates so that nothing happened to her, before leaving.
Watching Landon Lawson leave, the assistant felt a sense of ease. No matter what means Vera Yates used, she couldn’t have the man she desired so keenly. The feeling was truly exhilarating!
Bam!
A loud bang startled the assistant, her heart skipping a beat. She turned, seeing Vera Yates with a face as dark as thunder; the woman, shedding her earlier frail demeanor, revealed her true colors by smashing everything in the room that could be smashed.
The assistant trembled to the side.
Mad women are truly terrifying!
Swish!
A fierce gaze shot over, sending shivers down the assistant’s spine.
Was she going to smash her too?
Vera Yates’ eyes were cold and sinister as she walked step by step toward the assistant, who retreated until she was backed against the wall, nowhere else to escape!
"Miss Vance..."
"Backing away? Are you leaving with Stephen too?" Vera Yates smiled sinisterly.
"No, I would never leave Miss Vance." The assistant spoke trembling, a chill running down her back as Vera Yates stood in front of her, gripping her shoulders, fury hidden in her cold eyes.
"Why? What’s wrong with me? What’s better about that little slut Sienna? Why can she be with Stephen? Why did she give birth to his son? Why?"
"Miss Vance, calm down. I think President Lawson is just blind now. Your qualifications are superior in every way, far surpassing that woman. President Lawson will surely come to his senses soon."
Blind? Yes, Stephen is blinded by that little tramp. I must make him see clearly, quickly.
