I Inherited 5,000 Years of Family Property
Chapter 1008 1006: Hey, Do You Have a Death Wish?
"New recruits..." Professor Gemeit's lips twitched wildly.
The others may not know the value of this research data, but as an Level Eight researcher, how could he not?
Any piece of information here is enough to advance research in this area across the universe by at least a million years! Many of those weapons and equipment are still in the theoretical or even imaginative stage.
This shock is no different from humans just fantasizing about the notion of a time machine, and then someone places the blueprint and entire principles of making a time machine before you, telling you it's something they casually made.
Professor Gemeit carefully looked at Zhang Menglong for a moment, then made a serious decision, "Mr. Zhang, on behalf of the research institute at our intergalactic battlefield, I extend an invitation to you, sincerely hoping you can join us and contribute to our research endeavors."
"Professor, this..." Xinote's fellow compatriot showed a look of astonishment. Joining the research team is not a simple matter; its requirements are even stricter than joining the military, not only involving rigorous assessments of personal abilities but also quite deep background investigations.
"I will report this matter. As long as there are joint recommendations from three level nine researchers, then those procedures can be skipped," Professor Gemeit said, "I think these things won't just persuade three level nine researchers. It shouldn't even be a problem to have them pass unanimously."
Gemeit was very confident about this. If anyone wanted to vote against it, they'd better come up with something more impressive than his achievements. If you can do it, go ahead; if not, don't just talk big!
In his eyes, Zhang Menglong was just a Level Five Life Form, practically cannon fodder on this battlefield. Having him on the battlefield was such a waste of his talents.
If he were to sacrifice himself on the battlefield, it would be a tremendous loss for the entire intergalactic battlefield and even for the entire universe.
"No, I'm just a new recruit. I'm going to the battlefield," Zhang Menglong rejected, "I don't like being cooped up in a lab!"
"Mr. Zhang, forgive my bluntness, but you're not going to be of much help on the battlefield," Professor Gemeit said. "The entire battlefield has countless Level Five Life Forms; your presence or absence would not make much difference, but here, your role exceeds that of thousands of troops. Hundreds of regiments aren't even as important as you alone!"
"Damn, if I stay in the lab, I can't go to the battlefield, and if I can't go to the battlefield, how the hell am I supposed to earn Intimidation Points?" Zhang Menglong muttered to himself.
Though staying in the lab is indeed safe and can earn a lot of prestige points, one prestige point is only worth 10,000 Cred Points, whereas one Intimidation Point is worth a full 100,000 Cred Points. Plus, the act of showing off in front of other universes is such a joyous thing!
"Professor Gemeit," Zhang Menglong said, "where I come from, we have a saying: 'Be willing to die for the country.' As a martial artist, how can I stand at the rear? A fine young man should be shedding blood on the battlefield—join the military and regret it for three years, don't join and regret it for a lifetime. I, Zhang Menglong, was born to spend my youth on the battlefield!"
"Damn, the dean's starting to bluster again."
"If I didn't know him, I would've almost believed it."
"Isn't this more exciting than Boruto's tale?"
"This calls for background music!"
...
"Good!" Professor Gemeit couldn't help but be affected by Zhang Menglong's words. "Since you have such aspirations, I won't force you, but you must be careful; your life is not just your own. You must always remember this and don't try to be a hero on the battlefield!"
"I will!" Zhang Menglong looked as if he were saying, "If I don't go to hell, who will?" The light stretched his departing silhouette into a long shadow.
"Professor, are we just going to let him go like that?" the assistant looked at Professor Gemeit.
"Of course not!" Professor Gemeit said, "We must ensure his safety. I'll use my authority to directly send a message to the General, requesting covert protection for him. He must not sustain any harm on the battlefield. If there are difficult issues with these materials that need to be tackled, we will need his help!"
"Yes!"
...
"Menglong, you really missed out, why not stay at the research institute? The treatment there is good and it's safe; isn't that more worthwhile than going to the battlefield with us?" Xinos said.
He knew Zhang Menglong was formidable, even his prowess against some Level Seven Elementary Life Forms from other universes; not to say he could defeat the opponent, but at least he could secure his own safety. Yet in a battlefield, this kind of meat grinder, such prowess still meant a survival rate of less than 20%.
"Hehe, our abilities are actually more useful on the battlefield!" Zhang Menglong chuckled.
"Beep beep beep!" At this moment, Xinos' personal intelligent system emitted a series of alert signals.
"This is Xinos!" Xinos immediately connected the communication. This alarm meant something urgent; the last battle was less than 20 Cosmic Days ago, and they hadn't even had time to recuperate. Could it be that the enemy was attacking again?
"Captain, Universes 37 and 38 have launched another attack on our corps! Where are you; hurry back!"
"So soon? What's the scale of the attack?" Xinos asked in panic.
"Not as large as last time, but twice the usual scale."
"Twice the size..." Xinos's expression turned extremely grave. This scale wasn't particularly large, under the condition that their team was intact and everyone was full of energy.
However, the combat power of their entire team was non-existent, and many were still recovering from injuries. Under these circumstances, they simply couldn't last long. Once their defense line was breached, the effects on surrounding allied forces would be very severe, as the saying goes, a thousand miles of embankment can collapse from an ant hole.
"We will rush back right away!"
Fortunately, the headquarters from the intergalactic battlefield was not far from their Corps' satellite city; at the speed of the spaceship, they could reach it in a few dozen minutes with warp travel.
This was Zhang Menglong's first time witnessing a war of such colossal scale. The interstellar wars he had seen before were already considered epic in visuals, but compared to this, they seemed trivial.
Overlooking from the sky, the densely packed crowd consisted of warriors from both sides, and there were also some gigantic targets which were the cosmic beasts tamed by Universes 37 and 38.
Relying on the weapons on their defensive line, they could effectively prevent the opponent's advance, but they knew by hiding behind those thick-skinned giant beasts, they could still aggressively push the front line.
"Are those their warriors?" Zhang Menglong stared at the invaders.
They were different from his universe's warriors. They seemed like clones rolled out from an assembly line; almost everyone looked identical, with the only differences being in height and body shape. They appeared like armored robots, only when occasionally hit by a Beam Cannon, causing scenes of flesh and blood flying, did it prove they were indeed creatures of flesh and blood.
"Xinos, you finally came back!" A burly man was wielding a kind of personal weapon, fiercely shooting at the wave-like crowd. His accuracy was so high, he could hit an enemy warrior with every shot.
This weapon was not very lethal to Level Six Life Forms, but if it hit an ordinary Level Five Life Form, it could easily kill them in one shot.
"This is also our 1004th Corps 192nd sequence squad," Xinos introduced, "This is their captain, Kadriel."
Kadriel's squad managed to preserve their combat capability fairly well during the last battle; their defense line could still barely hold, allowing them to spare some forces to support others.
"Who are they..." Kadriel looked at Zhang Menglong and the others.
"Specially recruited new recruits into our team!" Xinos said, "Young fellas, this is your first battle; start your madness!"
"Everyone, charge with all your might!" Zhang Menglong commanded, not even giving Kadriel a chance to restrain them, as 667 people leaped directly off the city wall!
Kadriel was shocked: "Hey! Don't you value your lives?"
