CHAPTER 39: BLESSINGS

The pill was sweet, with a hint of bitterness at the end. Calen turned to look at the moon to see if anything mystical happens.

He felt something brush against his cheek lightly, and suddenly a bright white light blinded him.

Calen turned away and blinked furiously to regain his eyesight.

When he could see again he looked at Isara - she was slightly flushed and was smiling at him.

"What was that?" He queried.

"Blessing of the Moon." Isara said, and turned to Elira. "It seems like some myths are true."

A small smile played on the Alchemist’s lips.

"I suppose so."

"Could someone tell me what are you talking about?" Calen asked.

Isara smirked at him.

"We would love to, but I just remembered that Ellie and I have to do something very important, and can’t waste any time. Love you, bye!" She grabbed Elira’s sleeve, dragged her inside, and locked the door shut.

Calen was standing in the middle of the balcony completely dumbfounded by the events that had just taken place.

He turned to Cassian who was still there with him.

"Cass, am I dumb?"

"Yes." His friend responded without hesitation.

"Thanks."

Calen didn’t feel any different after taking the pill, but that’s because it would only take effect after the moon sets.

The reason they wanted to wait for the full moon was that the effectiveness of the drug was dependent on the amount of moonlight your body would be able to absorb.

Because of that Calen was currently laying on his bed without covers, trying to sleep.

His entire room was bathed in the silver light, so he wouldn’t have to worry about how much he was exposed to moonlight if he remained like that, but there was one problem.

’I’m cold.’

While the room was certainly lavish, it wasn’t particularly well insulated - the thick bedding was enough to remedy that, but he couldn’t get under it because it would limit the effects of the moon rose.

He decided to think about something else, it would take his mind of the temperature, and maybe make him tired enough to sleep.

’I wonder what the heck was in that book.’

He didn’t expect the tome to be anything more than a herb encyclopedia, but from what he understood from the girls it also contained stories related to some of the plants.

Calen was a bit surprised that druids had a book like that - the ones he met before weren’t particularly literary, nor interested in myths and legends.

He yawned.

’Should I try to figure out what was the story about the Moon Rose?’

From Isara’s reaction it seemed like the bright light - Blessing of the Moon - was the desired outcome, but what was the trigger for it?

His eyelids felt heavy.

He and Isara taken the pills together under the moonlight - but that’s what everyone did, there must have been something else.

What were the attributes of the Moon domain again? Illusions - that’s almost certainly not it, Memories? While he and Isara certainly shared a lot of those, somehow he doubted that was it.

There was one more attribute, but he couldn’t quite remember what it was...

His eyes closed, and his breath evened out.

When Calen finally woke up it was well past noon, he rarely slept this long so it was likely a side effect of the pill.

The first thing he noticed was that his shirt was soaked in sweat, as if he just went through an intensive training session.

Still partially asleep, he trudged to the bathroom to change into something more presentable. He took off the wet shirt, and was about to throw it in the corner, but his eyes lingered on the small mirror above the washing basin.

He looked different, but not quite in the conventional way - I’m fact he doubted that anyone but him would notice.

His eyes were clearer, skin smoother, teeth whiter, but... it was still him.

The effects were noticeable to him, but they weren’t overwhelming or anything - in fact they were rather incomplete.

He still had the several scars he collected during his swordsmanship lessons, which meant that beautification wasn’t the purpose of the blessing, but rather a bizzare partial side effect.

’Eh, I’ll figure it out later, time to focus on the main benefit.’

He didn’t really need to check, he simply knew he became stronger physically. His body was slowly approaching the limit of what was possible for a human, but he needed to actually cross that line if he wanted to survive inheriting the flame, and he was still ways off.

Checking the growth of his willpower wasn’t really viable at the moment, since he needed to either perform a big spell or do something complex with the flame - but he could how much his magic power increased.

He needed a simple spell that was highly dependent on the amount of energy-

BOOM

Calen’s thoughts were interrupted by an explosion from the neighbouring room.

’Isa!’

He run out of his room and barged into Isara’s bedroom.

"Are you alright?" He asked anxiously.

"Don’t worry, I’m fine."

She was kneeling on the floor with an utterly surprised expression, staring at something to his left. When he followed her gaze he realised what was the source of the explosion - on the wall opposite to the bed there was a huge smoking hole.

"...Were you perhaps testing out how much stronger you got?"

Isara nodded.

"I wanted to summon a simple fireball to check how big I can make it, and then dismiss it, but it got so large I freaked out and lost control."

It made sense, the hole in the wall was far larger than anything Isara has every summoned. The improvement was almost too good to be true if he was being honest.

"If you want to test your powers you might as well do it here, if anything happens it’s better to damage one room than two." She said.

Calen focused, and repeated what she did - he summoned the biggest fireball he could.

The results were... disappointing.

Sure, it was noticeably larger than what he could manage before, but not by much. If Isara’s power increased threefold, his increased by a third.

Noticing his sour expression, Isara said:

"Did you forget how soul saturation law works?"

Right, it wasn’t that the pill had a lesser effect on him, but rather that his magic power was already high to start with.

Your magic power and growth potential are set at birth, and the second one typically can’t be changed without outside influence.

Some people are born with a very high power but low potential, and some come to this world powerless with theoretically infinite potential.

’Theoretically’ being the key word here - those belonging to the second group very quickly notice that their progress becomes slower as they become more powerful. It never fully stops, but at some point the improvements are so small they might as well not be there.

This phenomenon was studied by Mages fir centuries, until they found the cause - it turns out that the soul is like a sponge for magic, it can absorb and hold some, but the amount is always limited.

We can improve the ’sponge’ so it can hold more water, but it becomes progressively more difficult, and there’s a limit how much we can increase the capacity without changing it’s shape before there’s only water left.

The analogy isn’t fully accurate since the soul isn’t bound by such things as physics, and therefore isn’t subject to physical limitations, but the point about increasing difficulty still stands.

Since Calen was significantly more powerful than Isara, his improvement was also much smaller - in theory the gap between them was still the same, but in practice she was closer to his power level than ever.

"Well then if you’re fine then I’ll go get ready for the day..."

Something on Isara’s right arm caught his attention - a thin silver line sneaked it’s way around her upper arm, the mark only partially visible due to her short sleeve.

"What’s that?" He asked.

"The Blessing of the Moon, of course. You have one as well, didn’t you notice?"

She was right, when he looked at his right arm he saw a silver pattern wrapped around his biceps, it looked like a tattoo made of moonlight.

"Do you know what it does? Outside of getting rid of zits, that is."

She opened her mouth to say something, but then closed it and shook her head.

"I have no idea." She grinned. "But hey it’s a blessing, it can’t be bad, right?"

"That remains to be seen. Anyway I need to get ready."

She chuckled.

"Ah yes, the bath of excruciating pain awaits you, don’t let me keep you."

He turned around to leave, but stopped in front of the door.

"Actually, would you come with me?"

Isara smirked.

"You’re asking me to bathe with you? Kinky."

Calen rolled his eyes.

"I need you there because you’re the only one who can lift me out of the water without touching it if something goes wrong."

She sighed dramatically.

"I suppose I can help you." She motioned at her outfit. "I’ll get changed and meet you in your room."
