Invincible after death, but in Warhammer 40K
Chapter 178 178: Void Behemoth
When Zhang Ge left the cockpit, he found himself positioned significantly higher than the other friendly forces.
Looking down at his feet, he realized he was directly atop the previous Land Battleship.
Moreover, this Land Battleship had undergone a complete transformation; apart from the church located at the Bridge and the Ram Prow at the bow, an odd array of "small cannons" had sprouted on the upper deck. While he couldn't discern their exact caliber, they appeared to be at least 200+ millimeters, with a staggering number exceeding a hundred.
Observing the exposed firing structures, Zhang Ge speculated that these cannons were likely just some towed Heavy Howitzers affixed directly to the deck.
Simultaneously, these numerous Heavy Howitzers were merely a fraction of the extensive armament, with an overwhelming array of Laser Defense Batteries, Quad-mounted Autocannons, and Rocket Pod Arrays scattered across the vessel.
In other words, what Zhang Ge stood on was likely to become a gigantic weapon second only to Titans in terms of lethality within the regiment. Despite its enormous size likely confining it to providing fire support from the rear during urban combat, the mere presence of over a hundred large-caliber Heavy Howitzers was sufficient to exert significant strategic influence.
As Zhang Ge pondered over who had transformed this vessel into such an unrecognizable form, his gaze fell upon Yolanda, still directing operations on the deck.
Ah, it's clear now! So that's why you've been MIA these past few days—turns out you've been here scheming behind my back.
On the other side, seeming to sense his gaze, Yolanda turned her head towards him.
Her voice came through after the communication request was accepted, tinged with satisfaction:
"I initially wanted to add a deployable bottom plate to the Land Battleship to avoid exposure, but then I thought, since we've built it anyway, why not utilize it fully? So, it turned out like this."
Zhang Ge was left speechless and took a while to respond:
"Will the load not be an issue?"
"I tested and calculated everything; it won't be. Originally, this hull was designed to support the weight solely of a sandworm, and once we realized it was, in fact, a ship, we found that not only could it handle its own weight but also that of the sandworm it was based on, making it more than sufficient to carry these."
"Oh, and due to its ample energy supply, I even fitted a temporary Plasma Shield Generator into the Bridge structure. That system was dismantled and reinstalled from elsewhere, so it might not be completely stable during operation."
Alright, I see your Dubious Triumph now; I'll remember this.
Secretly noting down Yolanda's accomplishments, Zhang Ge sighed softly.
After reaching out to Olivia, he confirmed he would be responsible for transporting the First Mechanized Infantry Regiment's ships.
Further inquiries revealed that the ship had to carry both the Land Battleship and a Titan, so all the accompanying forces were elite units, including four Ultramar Auxilia Regiments and three reorganized Cadian Shock Troops, to prevent any boarding actions from occurring.
Additionally, the situation in the Deadwood Sector might be more dire than Zhang Ge initially thought, as he spotted several Krieg Death Korps silently boarding a slate-gray transport ship, with their numbers looking to be in the hundreds of thousands at least.
Feeling pleased about being in the right place, Zhang Ge returned to the internal command area.
Below, the entire loading operation was progressing in an orderly fashion, with large numbers of soldiers and equipment being swallowed into the kilometers-long behemoth.
After some time, the first batch of ships finally took off slowly amid the roaring of their thrusters, streaks of Cobalt Thruster Trails splashing onto the hastily set up heat shields, creating numerous charred marks as the soldiers inside soared skyward.
For a long time to come, such scenes would persist; tens of millions of Astra Militarum and hundreds of millions of PDF soldiers could not be deployed in a single day or even a few rounds. Only the most elite portions would step onto the battlefield on the first day, heading into the most critical areas for firefighting duties.
Fortunately, the First Mechanized Infantry Regiment was among the first to deploy on that very day.
At this moment, Zhang Ge, who had just spent a few days on land before boarding again, hurried through the corridor on his way to a tactical briefing with several colonel commanders aboard.
After traversing for a while and passing through several layers of guards, Zhang Ge finally arrived at the designated cabin.
As he pushed the door open, he immediately heard a commanding voice reverberating through the room, which piqued his interest enough to halt his next step:
"That unnumbered regiment seems to have gotten an unimaginable amount of supplies from who knows where; damn it, the regiment I oversee has scavenged its way here from Cadia without even amassing a thousand Hellguns."
Another voice chimed in, seemingly familiar with the first:
"Ha! Unlike you, who's of no use, our infantry regiment has more tanks than your armor regiment and even got two Baneblades. I'm tempted to rob you blind! You? It's a miracle if you even get a few scraps."
Hearing this, Zhang Ge resumed his forward momentum, spotting a group engaged in spirited discussion.
As expected, the speakers were two colonels from the Cadian Shock Troops, while the commanders of the Ultramar Auxilia remained silent, mindful that much of what they spoke of came from Calgar's provisions.
His gaze swept across the room.
At the center stood a massive Tactical Hololith; its detail indicated it was not a hastily made piece. Surrounding it were a flurry of busy Vox-couriers and Staff Tacticians, suggesting this meeting took place in the command center rather than a separate location.
Moreover, since several regiments were not ones for formalities, the commanders adopted a practical demeanor; with Zhang Ge in his captain's greatcoat and polished Carapace Armor, he stood out as the most striking person among them, while others either wore Private Rank Insignia or dressed similarly to their guards.
Those who had been discussing Zhang Ge's arrival showed no change in expression upon his entrance, simply making room for him and even continuing the previous supply topic:
"Damn it, just as I was talking about you, you show up. If you happen to find any channels for supplies, do let me know—I promise to clear the tough ones out for you first."
"That's not necessary; in front of me, there are no hard bones to crack."
Anyone can talk big, huh? Zhang Ge chuckled in response, and the meeting then commenced amidst the ongoing discussions, marked by instances of raised voices and table thumping during points of contention. Not long after, Zhang Ge was fortunate to witness an intense exchange of techniques between Cadian Combat Tactics and Ultramarines Martial Arts.
Everyone present was acutely aware that they were discussing not just trivial matters but the lives of thousands who stood by their sides, allowing for no margin of error whatsoever.
