CHAPTER 469: CHAPTER 469 WHY WON’T YOU GIVE FACE!_1
"Who’s there!"
The sudden voice made Yun Jin’s hair stand on end. She, Yiyi, and Beibei had been attacking the formation for two and a half hours, yet they hadn’t sensed anyone else on the island. Her heart was now filled with terror. If the other party launched a surprise attack, wouldn’t the three of them be annihilated?
For a moment, the haughty Little Glutton realized just how dangerous their situation had been; they were standing on the very edge of death.
However, the panic was fleeting. After all, with The Supreme Emperor by her side, where in the world could be safer?
Suddenly, Yun Jin didn’t quite want to return to the Immortal Domain. In the Immortal Domain, she led a group of young Taotie and other clans to build a foundation for Empress Yiyi, but she still had to tread carefully around the older powerhouses, as if walking on thin ice. It was nothing like the freedom she had on Earth!
Xu Lai, however, wasn’t surprised at all, as if he had known all along that some old creature—not quite human, not quite ghost—was lurking here.
"May I ask if Emperor Qin is still here?"
Accompanying the voice, an old man leaning on a cane walked down leisurely from the mountaintop. He seemed slow, but in the blink of an eye, he had arrived before them.
"The Great Qin has fallen," Yiyi muttered softly, hiding behind her mother.
"The Great Qin... has fallen?"
The old man’s hair and beard were white, giving him the air of an Immortal sage, yet his entire body was shrouded in an undeniable aura of death. He clearly didn’t have long to live. Or rather, he had been dead for many years and couldn’t exist for much longer.
"It has been 2,240 years since the fall of the Qin Dynasty," Beibei added.
"So, two thousand years have already passed." The old man sighed with emotion. "The world has changed so much. I never expected to meet all of you upon waking."
"What is there to sigh about?" Xu Lai said flatly. "You’re the one who brought my daughter and her friends here, aren’t you?"
Although Yiyi and the other two had snuck away from Sea Temple Island, they hadn’t flown here on their own. This place was almost completely isolated from the outside world, making it nearly impossible for outsiders to find. Ordinarily, one would need a Teleportation Array to enter.
"Well, I had intended to recruit a few disciples for the Star Origin Sect and pass on this supreme formation," the old man with the cane said. "They are all excellent prospects, worthy of nurturing."
"So you just kidnapped us and brought us here?" Yun Jin was furious. I knew we couldn’t have come here for no reason! So it was this old geezer pulling strings in the shadows. How infuriating!
"It was not a kidnapping, but an invitation." The old man’s weathered face, etched with the deep lines of time, held a hint of pride. "Nineteen epochs ago, my Star Origin Sect was ranked among the top three great sects in the Immortal Domain! The Starlight Array was even renowned as the number one formation in the Immortal Domain. Are you... willing to join our sect, carry on the legacy of the greatest formation teaching, and restore its former glory?"
"The Star Origin Sect?" the Little Glutton exclaimed.
"Yes!" the old man said excitedly. "You’ve heard of it? I am the current Sect Hierarch!"
The Taotie girl shook her head. "Nope, never heard of it."
"...Then why did you sound so surprised!" The old man grew even more agitated, slamming his cane on the ground.
"None of your business! Hmph!" Yun Jin pointed to herself, her expression full of pride. "I am from the Taotie Clan. Got a problem with that?"
"I was once a Loose Cultivator in the Immortal Domain. Four thousand years ago, I chanced upon the Star Origin Sect’s inheritance at this very location. I died during the Qin Dynasty, over two thousand years ago. A wisp of my remnant soul was preserved within the sect’s Holy Artifact, which allowed me to fortunately escape the Samsara Sea," the old man said, shaking his head. "But I also know that the Taotie Clan is now a major clan in the Immortal Domain with a Quasi-Emperor Realm expert. Nineteen epochs ago, however, the Taotie were merely guardian beasts at my sect’s gate. What is there to be so proud of?"
Yun Jin was utterly enraged. She bared her little fangs, ready to charge forward and fight the old man to the death. Your ancestors were the guardian beasts! Believe it or not, I’ll eat you!
However, Xu Lai grabbed her by the scruff of her neck. The little girl’s limbs flailed, but she couldn’t move forward an inch.
"My ladies, are you willing to join my sect?" the old man asked, looking toward Ruan Tang and Yiyi.
Though he was only a remnant soul, he could tell that while Ruan Tang and her daughter had ordinary physiques, they possessed immense Spiritual Energy and terrifying Divine Sense. They were perfectly suited to become Array Masters.
He tried to coax them, saying, "As long as you are willing to join, I will pass the position of Sect Hierarch to you, and I will give you the sect’s Holy Artifact as well."
"I don’t want to," Xu Yiyi said decisively. She wanted to continue her cultivation with her dad, not become some lame Sect Hierarch.
Ruan Tang was far more polite. "I’m sorry, sir."
"Let’s go home." Xu Lai waved to his wife and daughter. There was no point in staying here any longer; it was time to go home, wash up, and sleep.
A sect that was destroyed nineteen epochs ago wants to trick my wife and daughter into taking over? His brain must be rusted through!
"This..." The old man was dumbfounded. This is an unparalleled inheritance! You’re actually rejecting the number one killing formation of all time, one capable of slaying a Quasi-Emperor? Aren’t you tempted? Don’t you want to master it? Are all the young cultivators in the Immortal Domain so arrogant these days?
"Please, reconsider!" The old man stamped his foot anxiously. His remnant soul, even stabilized by the Holy Artifact, could not last much longer. Soon, it would be drawn into the Samsara Sea. Forcibly remaining in the mortal world for over two thousand years was already his limit.
As a successor, he had sworn an oath upon receiving the inheritance to ensure the Star Origin Sect would flourish once more. But he was running out of time. If his remnant soul dissipated, the formation would activate automatically, annihilating all outsiders. The Star Origin Sect would be well and truly finished.
"My daughter has my family fortune to inherit one day. She has no time to play house here," Xu Lai said calmly.
His family fortune? Playing house? The old man trembled with rage. "How dare you! The Star Origin Sect was once one of the top three supreme Tao Lineages in the Immortal Domain! It produced two Quasi-Emperors! Even Emperor Realm powerhouses of that era had to show us some respect! By what right do you show such disrespect?"
"An Emperor Realm powerhouse from nineteen epochs ago did indeed show the Star Origin Sect some respect by leaving behind a piece of its inheritance. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be a Great Array lingering in this remote star system," Xu Lai stated calmly. "Besides, the so-called Starlight Array isn’t as perfect as the ancient records claim. It’s riddled with flaws."
Though Xu Lai was speaking the truth, to the old man leaning on his cane, it just sounded like mockery.
He bellowed, "Fine! Since you claim it’s riddled with flaws, this old man will see if you can back up your arrogant words!"
"Formation, activate!"
With a fierce tap of his cane, the entire desolate island’s aura changed in an instant. Endless starlight streamed down, birthing countless terrifying, murderous intents.
The sea surrounding the island began to churn violently, forming hundred-meter-tall tsunami waves. The earth cracked and trembled as the volcano beneath it erupted. It was a scene straight out of the apocalypse!
"Who the hell is it now?!?"
A childish shout echoed from the sky. The Heavenly Dao was on the verge of a breakdown.
Didn’t I just send that fish-man from Siya City to the Moon? I told him to keep an eye on the Moon Clan and stop any Tom, Dick, or Harry from coming to Earth! It’s only been a few days! How did another member of the Moon Clan get here?!
But as the little being resentfully extended its Divine Sense, it instantly shivered in shock. It’s not the Moon Clan...
