Judgment Descends Upon the Naruto World
Chapter 148: Fight of the Strongest Genins!
This year's All‑Shinobi‑World Chūnin Exams differ greatly from those in the original story.
In the manga, the second round—the Forest of Death—was a simple squad mission: any three‑man cell that collected both the Heaven and Earth scrolls and reached the goal line passed.
Now, however, advancement is calculated by village performance. The higher a village ranks overall, the more of its genin may enter the final tournament.
That instantly turns the exam from a small‑team trial into a grand game of coalition building: every candidate must hunt for comrades from the same village, forge alliances, and fight side by side as quickly as possible.
The battlefield becomes far more complicated.
The other four great villages came prepared. They formed a secret pact to gang up on the top seeds—Team 7—figuring that if the strongest were removed early, everyone else's odds would soar.
But Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha saw through the plot almost at once. Pretending to quarrel—although it was only half an act—they let Naruto "wander off," luring every ambusher into the open.
Sakura Haruno could only sigh to herself:
those two look like they're at odds, yet their teamwork is flawless.
She never noticed a plan at all; the boys hadn't even discussed it—they simply knew the other would understand.
Standing before the strongest squads of all four great villages, Naruto and Sasuke remain utterly confident.
From Sunagakure comes Naruto's friend Gaara, leader of a three‑man cell.
As a perfect One‑Tail Jinchūriki, Gaara's absolute defense is fearsome, making him the alliance's trump card against Naruto. Shukaku and Kurama have always bickered on sight, so setting the tanuki against the fox could hardly be more fitting.
After Chiyu unified the world, he kept his promise and freed every tailed beast.
Yet Shukaku, Saiken (Six‑Tails), and Kurama already had hosts; if they left, their jinchūriki would die. Sharing heart and mind with their partners, they chose to stay. The other beasts returned to their old habitats.
Even so, many have come to watch this Chūnin Exam, sitting in the stands like humans—what once seemed a fairy tale is now reality.
From Kumogakure come the Lightning‑Release swordsmen Samui, Omoi, and Karui.
From Kirigakure—beside long‑favored prodigies Chōjūrō and Suigetsu Hōzuki—stands a boy prettier than most girls:
Haku.
Yes: Momochi Zabuza and Haku have both rejoined the Mist and even reclaimed the Executioner's Blade from Jinchūriki Utakata. All thanks to Chiyu's reforms: he exposed that Fourth Mizukage Yagura was controlled, clearing Zabuza's name and turning him into a village hero. Chiyu also ended the persecution of bloodline clans, giving Haku a home.
Haku's talent is second to none; he rose instantly in the Mist.
Now, except for Kisame Hoshigaki and Samehada still roaming, the other six ninja blades have returned:
Twin Swords Hiramekarei — Mangetsu Hōzuki
Executioner's Blade — Zabuza Momochi
Thunder Swords Kiba — Ameyuri Ringo
The remaining three are in the hands of the new generation:
Long Sword Nuibari — Haku: his Ice Release and stealth stabs make Nuibari deadlier than ever.
Blunt Sword Kabutowari — Suigetsu: his Great Water Arm amplifies Kabutowari's smashing power.
Blast Sword Shibuki — Chōjūrō: the Mist hopes its explosions will harden his timid nature.
And the Mist has more fresh strength—such as Kimimaro, last of the Kaguya clan, now rescued from Orochimaru's fate.
Though still the weakest of the Five Nations overall, the Mist's youth corps overflows with promise.
…
Iwagakure's greatest change is Deidara.
Thanks to Chiyu's early unification, the stone prodigy never fell into darkness or Akatsuki. In the manga he committed bombings as a child and joined Akatsuki at twelve—brilliant but doomed to die at nineteen. He is only two or three years older than Naruto and Sasuke, still chasing "the art of explosion" but no longer glorifying terror. As Tsuchikage Ōnoki's top student, he is deeply trusted by Kurotsuchi and Akatsuchi.
These are the enemies surrounding Naruto and Sasuke: a field of prodigies and elites.
Gaara, gourd on back, crosses his arms and smiles.
"Naruto, we may be friends, but right now we're on opposite sides… Don't blame me for holding nothing back."
Naruto grins. "Bring it on, Gaara! I won't lose!"
Kurama scoffs inside him:
"Obviously. With me here, how could we lose to that raccoon?"
Shukaku shrieks,
"Stinking fox! Today I'll show you who's boss!"
Gaara chuckles. "Easy, Shukaku—stick to the plan. Sand plus Stone teams take Naruto.
Mist handles Sasuke. Cloud eliminates Sakura fast, then helps Mist with Sasuke."
The Anti‑Team‑7 Alliance is clearly ready—and their strategy shows their assessment:
Naruto strongest
Sasuke second
Sakura weakest
Reasonable: Perfect Nine‑Tails Mode is absurdly powerful; Mangekyō Sharingan is strong but still below Kurama; Sakura, though Tsunade's pupil, is young and incomplete.
Sasuke snorts, "Gaara, you'll pay for underestimating me!"
…
All four village squads charge.
Naruto instantly unleashes hundreds of Shadow Clones, reversing the siege around Gaara and Deidara.
"Hey—you're the ones surrounded now!"
Gaara is unafraid:
"Sand Shuriken!"
A storm of sand blades wipes out swaths of clones.
Temari swings her Giant Folding Fan—Wind Release: Great Net—blasting more away.
Kankurō's puppets fire traps and weapons like hail.
Kurotsuchi shouts, "Deidara‑senpai, don't fall behind!"
Deidara mounts a C1 clay bird, seizing the sky.
"Of course! C1—Clay Spiders!"
Tiny clay arachnids rain onto clones—
BOOM‑BOOM‑BOOM!
Explosions rock the Forest of Death. The stands erupt in gasps.
Mizukage Mei admits, "Remarkable… Tsuchikage‑sama, that Deidara is your star pupil?"
Ōnoki beams, "Indeed—but he can climb higher yet."
Chiyu watches, equally moved: in canon Gaara and Deidara were mortal enemies; now they fight shoulder to shoulder. Such change is the very proof of his presence in this world.
Even Naruto finds six elite foes a handful.
"Good—strong opponents make the fight worthwhile!"
…
Elsewhere, the Mist squad has Sasuke surrounded.
Chōjūrō begins: "Water Release: Hidden Mist!"
Dense fog blankets half the field.
Sasuke scoffs,
"Blind my eyes? You underestimate the Mangekyō's insight."
Suigetsu laughs, "Still cocky, huh? Water Release: Water Gun!"
A chakra‑charged water bullet rips through the mist—Sasuke tilts his head, dodging.
"Suigetsu, I can't see you, but your chakra is naked to my eyes.
Try this instead…"
Haku's voice emerges: "Secret Art: Thousand Flying Water Needles!"
Single‑handed seals—needles burst from every direction.
Shizune frowns in the gallery:
"One‑handed seals? And such speed, power, precision… Who is he?"
Mei explains:
"Haku of the Yuki Clan—last survivor of a bloodline purge, once fled with Zabuza. Lord Chiyu's reforms let them return. His talent rivals anyone's."
Kakashi and Fugaku trade impressed looks.
Sasuke responds with a perfect storm of shuriken and kunai, canceling every needle—unscathed.
Suigetsu grins, "He is an Uchiha chosen by the Lord of the Shinobi World."
Chōjūrō frets, "Can we beat such a genius?"
Suigetsu snaps, "Didn't the Mizukage call you a genius? Show some spine!"
The three draw their blades—Nuibari, Kabutowari, Shibuki.
"Time to get serious!"
They charge. Haku forms Ice Release: Crystal Ice Mirrors—a giant ice cage around Sasuke, then darts between mirrors, hurling needles like light.
But this is not Wave‑Arc Sasuke. Mangekyō flares; he tracks every move.
Haku adds a trap—fine wires laced through the ground.
"Longsword Ninja Art — Earth Spider Sewing!"
Lines snap tight at Sasuke's legs—but he jumps clear.
His left eye spins—black fire erupts.
"Amaterasu!"
Black flames roar across the mirrors, shattering ice like paper.
Haku staggers; the crowd gasps. Ōnoki marvels, "Twelve years old, wielding Amaterasu with such mastery?"
Mei murmurs toward Chiyu, "Rumor said Naruto and Sasuke are half‑students of the Lord… evidently true."
Baki teases Fugaku: "Looks like your son surpasses you."
Fugaku smiles. "All thanks to the Lord's teaching."
Haku retreats, but Sasuke's genjutsu drops him cold.
Suigetsu and Chōjūrō panic.
"Water Release: Great Water Arm!"
Suigetsu's arm swells; Kabutowari smashes down. Sasuke parries but is driven back; Kabutowari craters the earth. Chōjūrō follows with Shibuki, tags detonating in Sasuke's face.
Flames roar—
Naruto and Sakura cry, "Sasuke!"
Purple chakra explodes—half‑skeletal armor envelops Sasuke.
"Susanoo?!"
Stadium‑wide shock. Even Chiyu smiles in approval.
Fugaku stammers, "Lord… they trained under you, but this is… incredible! Sasuke can already summon Susanoo?"
The other Four Kage are speechless.
Sasuke gave a cool grin. "Naruto, this was meant for you. Consider it a preview."
