CHAPTER 106: 106

Morning sunlight spilled across the quiet suburban street as soon as Nix pulled the car out of the driveway. It was one of those crisp American mornings cold enough for the windows to fog at the corners but warm where the sun touched. The sky stretched wide and pale blue, streaked with wisps of cloud like faint brushstrokes.

Elisa watched the world from the backseat. Houses lined the street, each spaced neatly apart, trimmed lawns dusted with early dew. A jogger passed by, earbuds in, breath puffing visibly in the air. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked. Everything felt calm... painfully calm. Too calm compared to the storm turning circles in her chest.

Nyxella babbled softly beside her, kicking her tiny legs against her car seat. While Nix glanced at them through the rearview mirror briefly, before fixing his eyes back on the road. His jaw was set, unreadable. Even the simple act of blinking seemed calculated, making Elisa swallow hard.

"He’s too quiet today. Too controlled. Too... different." She thought to herself, stealing a glance at him.

They merged onto a wider road. Cars swam in orderly lanes, engines humming, horns occasionally snapping through the stillness. Tall buildings glimmered ahead in the distant slabs of shining steel and mirrored glass catching the sunlight in sharp flashes.

The closer they got to the business district, the thicker the air felt.

Skyscrapers rose like guardians over the city, casting long shadows on the roads below. Billboards flickered with advertisements, luxury watches, law firms, software companies boasting about "innovation" and "future." The sidewalks buzzed with people in suits, rushing across crossings with coffee cups in hand, phones held to their ears, faces carved with urgency.

Nix remained silent, gripping the steering wheel with a calm that felt too measured to be natural. His knuckles didn’t whiten. His breathing didn’t change. He simply was, like a statue brought to life only enough to be functional. But Elisa kept stealing glances at him.

The thought "Why does he look like he’s preparing for a war?" Kept playing in her mind as he hadn’t said a word every since they left the house

They turned into Harborview Avenue, a high-end corporate strip lined with towering offices wrapped in glass and sharp architecture. Everything gleamed. Everything smelled of power.

And then the car slowed.

The T&C construction group towered above them like a monolith.

A forty-story masterpiece of silver-and-blue glass, revolving doors spinning steadily at the entrance while a giant LED screen displayed the company logo: a sleek silver phoenix rising from a ring of light. Beneath it, employees streamed in, dressed in blacks, grays, and navy suits, badges hanging from their necks.

Nix parked in the VIP section directly in front of the building and the moment the security guards noticed him they straightened the moment they saw him.

One even swallowed visibly.

"Elisa," Nix said. His voice was quiet, too quiet. "Take Nyxella."

She unbuckled her daughter, heart pounding. As soon as her feet touched the ground, the cold air wrapped around her. Her breath trembled out.

The moment they stepped toward the entrance, whispers erupted like wildfire.

"Is that...?"*l

"No way. She actually came."

"Look.. look, that’s the CEO’s wife!"

"Is she back for real?"

"I thought she left..."

"Why is he bringing her here?"

Elisa tried to keep her head straight, clutching Nyxella close, but it was impossible to ignore the dozens of eyes following her every step.

Some stared in disbelief.

Some in confusion.

Some in open judgement.

Some, especially the women watched her with thinly veiled resentment.

The lobby doors slid open, and a rush of cold, perfume-cleaned air washed over them.

On arrival at the lobby little Nyxella screaming in bewilderment clapping her hand. Crystal chandeliers floated above like falling stars, dripping light across marble floors streaked with gold. A massive digital waterfall display cascaded behind the front desk, shifting between deep blues and shimmering silver. Velvet lounge chairs formed small islands across the sleek white space, where employees sat murmuring into phones or tapping on tablets.

The moment Nix stepped inside, the entire atmosphere changed.

Conversations wavered.

Typing slowed.

Heads lifted one by one as their preying eyes fell on Elisa and silence rippled outward like a wave.

"Oh my God..." someone whispered.

"He brought her here?" another muttered.

"What is happening today?"

Then..

"Mr. Dean!" the head receptionist practically squeaked, leaping to her feet. "S-sir... the board has been waiting for.."

"I know," Nix replied sharply, not breaking stride. "They will continue waiting."

Elisa almost stumbled. His voice didn’t sound like the Nix she knew. It was deeper, colder... commanding in a way that stirred something primal in the air.

He led them to the private elevator and the doors slid open with a soft chime.

As they ascended, Elisa could feel something building inside the elevator an invisible pressure. Nix was standing perfectly still, his expression carved from stone. Nyxella reached toward him and giggled.

He didn’t even blink.

"Nix..." Elisa finally whispered, unable to hold it back anymore. "Are you okay?"

For the first time, he turned toward her but his eyes remained.

Too calm.

"We’re on another battlefield," he said, with a measured voice. "Everyone is your enemy except me" his statement rang a bell, they were the same words he told her the night of the party

Has he actually found out.. no, she shaked her head but then who did she have to be careful of?

The elevator dinged her back to the present before her.

The 27th floor opened into a corridor lined with full-glass walls, giving a panoramic view of the city. The boardroom was at the far end of the hallway, its large frosted doors already surrounded by assistants pacing in panic.

The moment they reached the executive floor, the tension in the air felt almost physically thick, buzzing, pressing against Elisa’s skin like static. Assistants paced up and down the hallway, clutching tablets and files, whispering urgently into earpieces. The moment they caught sight of Nix approaching, the chaos stuttered to a halt.

One of the male assistants, a young man with nervous eyes and a badge crooked on his blazer nearly tripped over his own feet trying to reach him.

"Sir... sir," he stammered breathlessly, "the board is furious. They’ve been shouting for you. They said they won’t.."

His voice cut off.

Abruptly.

His eyes shifted from Nix... to Elisa.

He blinked.

His mouth dropped open just a little.

Behind him, two other assistants froze mid-step, their documents half-lowered, eyes widening as though they were staring at an apparition.

Not confusion.

Not curiosity.

But the shock was raw and unfiltered.

"Mrs. Dean...?" one whispered, almost afraid to say it aloud.

"Is she... really here?"

"I.. I thought she..." another murmured, stepping closer to get a better look, as though she might vanish if they blinked.

A hush rippled down the corridor, replacing the frantic energy with a stunned, vibrating stillness. And then

The boardroom doors slammed open.

Hard.

Several board members stormed out, faces flushed a deep, irritated red. Their suits were impeccable, but their composure was slipping jaw muscles tight, breaths harsh, eyes blazing with corporate indignation.

"Do you have any idea how long we’ve been.."

"Nix, this is completely unacceptable.."

"We are not children to be kept.."

But they didn’t finish.

Because Nix moved.

Not fast.

Not aggressively.

Just one step forward.

And that single step shifted everything.

It was as though the temperature in the corridor dropped five degrees. The air grew dense, heavy enough to feel in the lungs. The overhead lights flickered not the way bulbs do when power dips, but as though the atmosphere itself was trembling.

Even Nyxella, who had been babbling softly in Elisa’s arms, went silent... her small eyes lifting to stare at her father with a strange, instinctive awareness.

The board members’ voices died mid-breath. Anger drained from their faces, replaced with something far more primal an old, instinctive fear. Like prey realizing it had mistaken a predator for something tame.

Dr. Halden, the eldest and most respected board member, stood closest to Nix. His spine seemed to lose its stiffness as he swallowed hard, Adam’s apple bobbing visibly.

"N-Nix..." he whispered, voice cracking softly, "your... your presence alone is enough to silence a room, I see."

Nix did not smile.

He did not blink.

Every trace of warmth, of familiarity, of humanity... had drained from his features.

"We’re going in," he said, voice smooth, low, and coated in a calm so lethal it made the hair on Elisa’s arms rise.

The weight of his tone was undeniable, commanding, absolute, and impossible to defy.

Elisa’s breath hitched.

Because she knew this wasn’t just authority.

This was power, the kind that didn’t need shouting or threats. The kind people felt in their bones. The kind rulers carried. The kind nightmares bowed to.

And suddenly, every instinct inside her began to whisper warnings.

Not because of the board members’ behavior.

Not because of their hostility.

Not because of the whispers behind her.

But because..

This was not the man she had lived with.

This was not the man who gently lifted her feet that morning.

This was not the man who teased her or rolled his eyes or sighed when she questioned him unnecessarily

This was someone else entirely.

Someone the world feared.

Someone who could silence a hallway with a breath.

Someone whose presence alone bent the atmosphere.

Someone she suddenly realized... she did not truly know at all.

As he placed his hand on the boardroom door and pushed it open, leading them inside, a cold shiver crawled down her spine.

Am I safe?
