leaving you bereft
Altar 18
Now that autumn was here, the streets had transformed into rivers of fallen leaves.
A fleet of sleek ck cars drove into a vi in Brindlewood, making a grand entrance. There were maybe seven or eight in total.
The servants tried to stop them from entering, but how could they hold back over 20 men in ck?
An elderly servant was forcibly dragged in front of Willow. He couldn’t stop trembling in fear.
Willow’s eyes were cial. “Is Catherine Burke home?”
The old servant feigned ignorance, avoiding eye contact and mumbling evasively.
Willow paid him no attention and walked straight into the grand hall. Behind her, Annie and the 20–odd security personnel followed closely.
Catherine was lounging on her sofa enjoying a self–pamper session when she suddenly found herself surrounded.
Startled, she tried to act tough. “What do you think you’re doing? This is trespassing! I’m warning you–it’s illegal!”
“Illegal?”
Willow emerged from within the crowd, a mocking smile tugging at her lips.
“If I remember correctly, Julian and I are still legally married. I am still Mrs. Ziegler, and this house is a joint property in both our
names.”
Willow pointed a finger at Catherine, then at thevishly decorated hall. “Anything on you that was purchased with Julian’s card
-even your underwear–I have every right to reim. All those Dulcet & Co. handbags in your closet, too, fall under our marital
assets. As for this vi, I own half the rights to it. Now, I’m legally asking you to move out. Nothing unreasonable about that, is
there?”
Catherine stomped her foot in fury. “Julian will not let you get away with this.”
Willow’s expression grew frigid. “And until he’s here, I’m not letting you off.”
With that, she picked up a ss vase. Not just any vase–it was a masterpiece by a world–renowned artisan, worth over 40
thousand dors. And that was just one item–there was no imagining the total value of this extravagantly furnished vi.
She had fought alongside Julian for years, only for another woman to reap the benefits of herbor. What a joke.
In the next second, a loud crash rang through the halls.
The bvase /bshattered into smithereens. The 40 thousand dors was reduced to nothing but shards on the floor.
Willow’s gaze fell bon /bCatherine. Calmly. She delivered her orders to the ck–d men. “Destroy everything! I don’t want to see a
single trace of this ce as it is now.”
Catherine shrieked in objection, “You can’t do that! This is my home.”
A sharp p cut her off.

She waspletely stunned. It took a long moment for her to return to her senses. When she finally did, she murmured, “This is
my home. This is my home with Julian. You can’t just destroy it.”
Each time she imed it was her home, Willow pped her again.
She didn’t hold back.
Soon, Catherine’s delicate face was swollen. Her hair was disheveled, and she looked utterly pathetic.
Even then, she insisted this was her home, demanding the men stop what they were doing. But they were ruthless. Within half an
hour, the entire vi was unrecognizable.
Catherine was on the verge of a breakdown. She was about to lose her mind.
But Willow still had unfinished business with her.
She walked up to her, studying her innocent face. Upon learning about Julian’s betrayal, she had chosen to handle things civilly.
Before today, she had only discussed divorce and neverid a finger on Catherine.
Yet, it was Catherine herself who overstepped her boundaries and touched Willow’s family.
Willow reached out and brushed her fingers against Catherine’s abdomen. Her movements were eerily gentle.
Goosebumps trailed across Catherine’s skin in their wake, and she trembled violently in fear.
Memories of the trouble she had caused at the hospital earlier in the day were still fresh in her mind. She had no idea if that olddy survived–but even if she were dead, she would never admit to anything.
She didn’t think it mattered. She carried something Julian wanted. As long as that remained true, he would go to great lengths to
protect her.
Willow looked her in the eyes. “I heard you’re pregnant? That it’s Julian’s?”
Catherine clenched her jaw. “Yes, I’m carrying Julian’s baby. If you don’t believe me, you can order a paternity test after the child
is born and see for yourself.b” /b
Willow sneered. “No need for all that trouble! The world of technology has advanced since the olden days. We can determine the DNA match from the amniotic fluid. All the doctor has to do is extract amniotic fluid directly from your uterus, using a long needle like ba /bsteel nail through your abdomen. From there, they canpare it with Julian’s hair sample for confirmation.”
Catherine was downright petrified.
A long needle like a steel nail… through her abdomen… to extract amniotic fluid!
Every word Willow uttered sent a series of chills down her spine. Her teeth chattered involuntarily, but she still refused to admit
the truth. She wouldn’t say she wasn’t pregnant.
Willow, on the other hand, remained unforgiving. She ordered, “Take her to the
hospital!”
