leaving you bereft

Julian froze.
He stared at Willow’s tear–brimmed eyes. Seeing how sad she was, he realized how much she actually cared.
She wasn’t as strong as she pretended to be.
She was only 27, yet she had gone through so much with him. The debt he owed her was something he could never repay in this lifetime.
But now, all he could say was, “I’m sorry.”
Tears streaked down Willow’s cheeks as she smiled faintly.
“Julian, I don’t want your apology. All I ask for is for you to leave and let me have some peace. If you’re truly sorryb, /bsign the papers.”
Julian refused to sign as he didn’t want a divorce. So, he left the apartment.
Downstairs, his car hadn’t left.
He sat inside the car with a cigarette between his lips. He was about to light it when his gaze was drawn to a group of children ying in the distance.
It was New Year’s Day, and the children were setting off small firecrackers. Theirughter filled the crisp air.
Julian looked at their innocent faces, lost in thought.
Actually, Willow loved children.
Every Christmas, Willow would prepare gifts and sweets for the younger children in the Ziegler family.
She would always smile as they watched them happily munch on bthe /bsweets and open the gifts.
Julian watched the children for a long time before he slumped back into the leather seat, shielding his eyes with the back of his hand.
Suddenly, his eyes shimmered with moisture.
By noon, he returned to the Ziegler residence.
As soon as he parked the car, someone had been waiting for himb, /binstructing him to go to the study, mentioning that Dominic wanted a word.
Julian stepped out of the car, shutting the door behind him. “Noah, what did Grandpa say?”
Noah Harris smiled faintly. “He didn’t say much, but he shed some tears. bHe’s /bgenuinely moved. It’s rare to bsee /bhim like that.”
Julian didn’t say anything. He just walked past the trees and headed straight to the study.
bHe /bopened the door and it was quiet inside.
Dominic was ying chess by himself. When he heard the noiseb, /bhe didn’t even look up when he asked, “Did you send your wife away?”
Julian hummed in response and sat down across the table. He picked up a few chess pieces and said, “Grandpa, I’ll y a round with you.”
A pnded on the back of his hand.
Dominic scoffed, “Why are you ying chess with me instead of being with your wife? How promising.”
Julian put down the chess piece band /bchuckled helplessly. “My wife is gone, isn’t she?”
Dominic red at Julian angrily. “So what if bshe’s /bgone? Can’t you chase after her? Julian, let me ask you something man to man.
“What do you n to do about Willow?”
Julian didn’t hide anything. “I don’t want a divorce. I want to stay with her.”
At his admission, Dominic spoke his mind.
“If you don’t want a divorceb, /bthen act like a man. If having children is an issueb, /bjust adopt someone from within the family.
“Plenty of people would be more than happy to offer their children. Willow can choose the one she likes.”
Julian was stunned because Dominic had always been obsessed with bloodlines.

Dominic didn’t forget about his eldest grandson. “Dexter’s child should be the first option. As for the shares, since Willow didn’t want it, your father has agreed to pass it to Dexter after I’m gone.
“All these years, he’s been bitter about it.”
Julian had no objections.
Dominic twirled a chess piece between his fingers. After a long pause, he finally said, “As for the matters in Grandsburg, cut things off as soon as possible!”
