Legendary FBI Detective
Chapter 538 538: Untraceable Fingerprints and DNA
Washington D.C., a certain park.
"Surveillance issue?"
Luo An looked toward Reesi and asked:
"What happened?"
"At each of the four entrances to this park - east, south, west, and north - there are several surveillance cameras."
Reesi pointed to the body on the ground, indicating that this area was close to the western side of the park, and then continued:
"According to park surveillance staff, around 3 in the morning, two cameras in the western region were attacked by an unidentified object and got damaged."
Winslow, standing nearby, came over with some confusion:
"Unidentified object? UFO?"
"No, it was rocks."
Chenier gave Winslow a dismissive look and said:
"Reesi and I just went there to check it out and found that those two cameras were vandalized with rocks from a few meters away in the surveillance blind spot."
Luo An thought for a moment, then asked:
"Do incidents of cameras being smashed occur often in this park?"
"No."
Reesi shook her head:
"I asked the manager of park surveillance, and he said that the area near the park is mostly middle-class residents, hardly any homeless people around, so this kind of thing has happened, but not often."
"A body in the park and surveillance cameras being smashed on the same day..."
Winslow put forward his guess:
"Could it have been done by the murderer? Because the cameras captured him."
"Perhaps."
Currently lacking enough evidence, Luo An didn't have any better ideas.
Putting on gloves and walking over to the victim's body, Luo An crouched down for a closer inspection, then slightly lifted the right arm of the body, suddenly furrowing his brows as he noticed something, and asked:
"Everyone, what is this? Do you recognize it?"
Winslow, Chenier, and Reesi quickly gathered around, following Luo An's direction to the right arm, where they saw a dark red pattern imprinted on the skin, which was hard to spot because it was covered by the blood and brain matter from a gunshot wound to the head.
Winslow was the first to hazard a guess:
"Is it a tattoo?"
"It looks like a tattoo sticker."
Chenier made her guess, Reesi stared intently at it for a while and then suddenly spoke out:
"No, everyone, it's a stamp."
"A stamp?"
Winslow and Chenier were taken aback, Luo An quickly caught on:
"The kind from a bar?"
Reesi nodded, Winslow bent down and stared hard at the dark red pattern, then shook his head after a moment:
"No good, it's covered too thoroughly, can't make out the specific design."
"So, we'll leave this job to the forensic team to follow up on."
Luo An stood up, retracting his gloves as he said:
"Chenier, Reesi, you two continue to look for clues in this park, bring back the previous surveillance footage.
Winslow, you'll work with the forensic team later, remember to bring back the examination results to Special... I mean, to Unit Thirteen."
Luo An was used to calling it the Special Investigation Team, suddenly switching to Unit Thirteen still felt a bit unfamiliar.
"Understood."
"No problem!"
Winslow, Chenier, and Reesi nodded in agreement, each setting off on their tasks, while Luo An left the park and drove back to the FBI Washington Headquarters building.
In the corridor, several passersby agents smiled and nodded at Luo An, who smiled and nodded back, not letting his expression relax until he stepped into the elevator.
"Luo An?"
The elevator reached the fifth floor, and as Luo An was walking out, he encountered Minister Antoine from the Professional Responsibility Office, along with his secretary.
"Good morning, sir."
Luo An glanced at the secretary nonchalantly, shook hands with Antoine, they exchanged a few pleasantries, then Antoine asked:
"Group Leader Luo An, you were out handling a case?"
"A murder case."
Inside this building, there was no way to hide such investigative work, so Luo An spread his hands and complained:
"But right now, we haven't even been able to identify the victim."
"Such minor issues shouldn't pose a problem for Group Leader Luo An."
Antoine smiled and then, shifting the topic, asked:
"Do you think Group Leader Luo An is free tonight? I know a good restaurant, how about going for a dinner?"
"Sorry, I'm not entirely sure if I'll have time tonight."
Luo An didn't give a definite answer, indicating that he was working on a case and something might come up in the evening, so he would contact him by phone then.
"OK."
Antoine smiled, shook hands with Luo An again, and then entered the elevator with his secretary.
As the elevator doors closed, Luo An's eyes narrowed slightly, he pondered for a few seconds, then grinned and turned to leave. Inside the elevator, Antoine looked at the flickering numbers and asked:
"How is the investigation going?"
"It's almost done."
The secretary nodded and whispered:
"Ever since Luo An Greenwood became the leader of the Special Investigation Team, he has not been involved much in politics and hasn't shown a keen interest in power.
As for women, Luo An Greenwood's private life was a bit of a mess during his bachelor days, but later he has only been living with Mona Evans."
"A faithful man."
Minister Antoine laughed and then added:
"So, does he like money?"
The secretary nodded and briefly described how Luo An led the Special Investigation Team in making money from various sources while handling cases.
"Good."
A sharp glint appeared in Antoine's eyes, and the air in the elevator gradually quieted down. The two did not continue to discuss this topic.
Meanwhile, deep on the fifth floor, in the office area of Investigation Group No. 13.
Luo An pushed the door and entered, asking directly:
"Mona, did you find anything from the surveillance near the crime scene?"
"Unfortunately, nothing at all."
Mona pushed the desk with her hand, and the chair beneath her spun around in place. Resting her chin on her hand, she replied:
"Not only is there no sight of the perpetrator, but even the victim hasn't been caught on the surveillance near the park."
Beside her, Michelle nodded and added:
"It feels like the victim suddenly appeared and died in that park."
"Then, let's wait for the results from the forensic examination."
Luo An unscrewed a bottle of water and drank, then wiped his mouth and briefly mentioned the discovery of the stamp on the arm of the corpse, saying:
"Mona, Michelle, the two of you check the bars in the area near the park where the crime occurred, and see which ones still use stamps. Organize them in advance for comparison later on."
At this point, Luo An paused for a moment, suddenly remembering the lunch he had gone to with Vireness, and added:
"Also, try to check out some private parties, clubs, restaurants, etc."
"OK."
Mona and Michelle nodded in agreement, moving their chairs to start typing on the keyboards.
Luo An pushed the door and entered the Group Leader's office. Because the case had come in a rush, the computer, desk, chairs, and files in the Group Leader's office had not yet been completely organized.
Hours passed, and at one-thirty in the afternoon, Winslow walked into Investigation Group No. 13 with a folder in hand:
"Everyone, I'm back!"
In the office area, Reesi was spinning in her chair and pointed at the food on Winslow's desk with a laugh:
"Winslow, had you returned a few minutes later, I would have polished off your lunch for you."
Winslow handed the folder to Mona and picked up the somewhat warm lunch on the table with a smile:
"Seems like I came back just in time."
Luo An also heard Winslow's loud voice and came out of the Group Leader's office, asking:
"How did it go with the results from forensic examination?"
"The autopsy results show that the direct cause of death for the victim was the two shots to the back of the head."
Mona opened the folder, frowned slightly, and said:
"Ballistic testing shows that the weapon that killed the victim is a new black gun with no existing records.
Moreover, DNA and fingerprint comparisons have no results, and we can't determine the victim's identity.
The face was also damaged beyond recognition, making facial recognition impossible.
The only certain thing from forensic examination is that genetic testing reveals the victim to have one-eighth German ancestry."
"No clues from DNA and fingerprints?"
After hearing Mona's narration, Reesi's eyes widened, Chenier frowned looking towards Winslow, Winslow spread his hands with nothing to say, and Michelle, after a pause, said:
"So, today's victim, had never been caught by law enforcement for any crime?"
Luo An pondered for a few seconds and said:
"Besides that, there's another possibility."
