CHAPTER 775: CHAPTER 777: INTEGRITY AND RULES OFFICE

Reesi not only inquired with the prison guards and asked Michelle to help review the surveillance footage, she also conducted on-site visits and questioning—and even covertly offered rewards.

You could say that Reesi used every investigation method the FBI had ever deployed in her search for the identity of the mystery person.

Yet, the results were still fruitless.

By the end of the discussion, Reesi’s voice was cold as death, and she spoke in a lowered tone:

"Luo An, I feel like this mystery person knows too much about how the FBI operates.

This guy is either the FBI’s worst enemy or..."

"Or he’s one of the FBI."

Luo An finished Reesi’s sentence with a smile, then said:

"You come back first, we’ll discuss this further when you return."

"OK."

Reesi hung up the phone, and Chenier looked up at Luo An, asking:

"Do you think the guy who caused the prison riot is one of our own?"

"Although we’re all FBI, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re all comrades."

Luo An patted Chenier on the shoulder meaningfully, and then dialed Mr. Clement’s number.

He briefly explained Reesi’s investigation process, then said:

"Boss, I’d like you to help check, on the day that mystery person went to the prison, which agents from the FBI Washington Headquarters were absent."

Mr. Clement on the other end of the line fell silent for a few seconds, agreed to the request, and hung up the phone.

Tossing the cellphone to Chenier, Luo An then turned back to the interrogation room, cutting to the chase:

"Who was the FBI that passed you the information related to Vireness?"

Matthew Moses raised an eyebrow, still prepared to beat around the bush, but Luo An knocked on the table forcefully, saying:

"Don’t waste time. You don’t need to know what kind of federal agent I am.

The only thing you need right now is a cell with a window."

Hearing Luo An use this to threaten him, Matthew Moses’s eyelid twitched, and he dared not stall any longer, answering:

"The source of the information came from the Integrity and Rules Office at your FBI Washington Headquarters... the director’s secretary."

Toward the end, Matthew Moses deliberately took a big breath, just to see Luo An’s reaction.

Because the director of the Integrity and Rules Office, named Vikram Garcia, is Jewish, and so is his secretary Harlock.

As for whether the source of the message was Secretary Harlock or Director Vikram himself... Matthew Moses claimed it was the secretary, but how the secretary came to know the relevant information about Vireness and dared to pass it on, is an interesting question.

Seeing no change on Luo An’s face, Matthew Moses was somewhat disappointed. Before he could say anything else, Luo An got up, signaled Winslow to take Matthew Moses out of the interrogation room and send him to the temporary detention prison.

In the corridor, Mona looked at the name on the interrogation record, her brow furrowed:

"Integrity and Rules Office..."

"Just hearing the name, you’d know it’s a department very suitable for Jews, all about integrity and rules."

Luo An made a sarcastic joke, then fell silent for a few seconds before summarizing:

"CIA director Matthew Moses, upon learning that the FBI started investigating the polonium-210 incident, obtained related information to Vireness from the Integrity and Rules Office.

The President and CEO of Illinois Nuclear Energy Company, Leiden Perelman, was killed unexpectedly by a gunshot, pushing Matthew Moses to break the rules and inform the next-level manager Ulysses.

Manager Ulysses then relayed this information to Etwan Jones, the head of the testing lab, asking him to lay low recently to avoid attracting attention.

Learning of this, Etwan Jones decided to turn the tables by using polonium-210 to hire a hit on Vireness, and prepared to pin the whole blame on manager Ulysses..."

Mona, Chenier, and Michelle all nodded in agreement. The investigation of this incident was clear by now, with only one question unresolved. Mona asked in a lowered voice:

"What should we do about the Integrity and Rules Office?"

Issues involving Jews tend to be complicated and risky, Mona, Chenier, and Michelle all dislike having too much association with them in their cases.

"Due to the incident exceeding our jurisdiction, we should report to our superiors."

Luo An said seriously the typical words meant to pass the buck, and, taking the interrogation record from Mona’s hands, waved his hand and said:

"I’ll go to Mr. Clement’s office, you all go and meet Reesi and help her organize her investigation materials."

"No problem."

The three women nodded in unison. Seeing this, Luo An turned and headed towards the distant elevator.

The elevator doors opened, Luo An walked through the hallway and had just reached the doorway of Mr. Clement’s office when he saw Mr. Clement and his secretary, both changed into their coats, clearly ready to head out.

"Good day, sir."

Luo An greeted with a wave, then with a bit of confusion said:

"What is this..."

Mr. Clement furrowed his brow and asked:

"Did you discover any new information?"

"Indeed, I found some things related to Vireness."

Luo An handed over the interrogation record to Mr. Clement, then briefly summarized the names mentioned by Matthew Moses.

Hearing it was related to the Integrity and Rules Office, Mr. Clement’s brow furrowed even more. He fell silent for a while, then handed the folder to his secretary and said in a deep voice:

"Take this to the Director."

"Yes, sir."

The secretary’s forehead twitched, but he still nodded and accepted the task. Mr. Clement then looked at Luo An and asked:

"I remember, Luo An, you have an amazing micro-expression analysis ability, which can determine the truthfulness of what others say, right?"

The so-called micro-expression analysis was just a cover Luo An made for the "emotional perception" in his mind, but at this time he obviously couldn’t tell the truth, so he nodded and said:

"Yes, sir, but this technique isn’t that miraculous; it occasionally makes mistakes."

Mr. Clement waved his hand, taking it as Luo An’s modesty, and said:

"Hurry back to your office and change your clothes, we’ll meet in the parking garage downstairs. You’re going to accompany me."

"Okay, sir."

Luo An was puzzled but seeing that Mr. Clement was quite anxious, he didn’t inquire immediately and agreed before turning to return to his office.

After changing into a coat, Luo An went downstairs into the parking garage, Mr. Clement had been waiting in the passenger seat for a long time. He gestured for Luo An to get into the driver’s seat, then started guiding him on the direction to drive the car.

Mr. Clement didn’t specify the destination, and Luo An didn’t ask. They drove smoothly and soon arrived at a villa in the suburbs of Washington.

The car slowed to a stop, Mr. Clement sat silently in the passenger seat for a few seconds, then let out a long sigh and opened the car door:

"Luo An, join me."

"Yes, sir."

Luo An followed closely as Mr. Clement stepped out of the car, striding toward the entrance of the villa and pressed the doorbell.

Luo An stood behind Mr. Clement, carefully observing his surroundings, noting that the lawn around the villa was not only impeccably maintained but also had numerous obstacles suitable for hiding and escape.

A multitude of thoughts flashed through Luo An’s mind as he silently took note of the terrain.

After a lengthy wait, the front door finally opened. A middle-aged Caucasian man with half black, half white hair, looking to be in his fifties, came out with a smile:

"It’s been a while, Clement!"

Mr. Clement was expressionless, pulling out a handgun and pressing it against the other man’s abdomen:

"Thomas, you are under arrest."
