Chapter 90: "It’s Coming"
.
Lang Huojin, leader of the Mad Jackals mercenary group, was sleeping comfortably, having finally finished all the preparations for his upcoming trip to the Yao family’s mines the next day.
He had made sure the news didn’t leak, and given the possibility of finding a fifth stage beast, he had prepared thoroughly.
Today, at last, he had nothing left to do but rest and wait for tomorrow, the day they would finally depart.
He had recalled all of his team, pulling them from various missions and losing quite a bit of money as a result, but he didn’t care.
The Yao family’s reward was more than generous, and he wasn’t about to let it all fall apart, so he did everything possible to be ready.
Who would have guessed that the moment he finally closed his eyes, his communication talisman, the one given to the sentry guarding the mine, would activate.
He was annoyed, but he knew that if they were contacting him, it wouldn’t be for something minor.
And just as he suspected, the situation was problematic.
In fact, calling it "problematic" might have been an understatement.
Things were very bad.
As soon as they arrived at the mine, they could immediately sense something was wrong. He took his team and entered, only to find the place in total chaos ,
with nothing left but a massive crater where the cave that supposedly held the fifth stage beast should have been.
Needless to say, this was a serious warning sign for him, and after a bit of contemplation, they decided to descend into the enormous crater that had opened up before them to see what was happening down below.
They had confirmed, thanks to an artifact, that while the crater was deep, it was within their capabilities, so they went down.
As they descended, they could feel their body’s Qi being disturbed and disrupted, especially when released.
They wondered if this was due to the beast that was supposed to be here.
If so, the fight wouldn’t be easy.
But before anything, they had to confirm the situation.
It took a while, but they all managed to descend safely, finding themselves in a large underground area connected to a massive tunnel.
Just as they were reorganizing to decide what to do next, they heard a loud commotion coming from the tunnel, and a moment later, a man in black armor, wounded, came running out, shouting at them.
Already confused and frustrated by the situation, they couldn’t help but grow even angrier at the man’s outburst.
If it hadn’t been for the powerful aura he was emitting, some of them might have already captured and tortured him to find out what he was doing there.
But they held back, waiting for their leader to make the first move.
"Dare step foot in this place? Who the hell do you think you are to tell me where I can or can’t go?
Do you know who i am?" Yun Hao spat, wounded and frustrated, suddenly face to face with this unknown group.
If the situation weren’t so dire, he wouldn’t have paid them any attention and would have just eliminated them.
But his body was far too injured to do anything, not to mention the horde of monsters closing in.
He decided to seal the tunnel first, but it seemed the other side had different plans.
The moment he pulled out the talisman, ready to activate it, something shot toward him, aiming for his head.
"You dare?" he growled, releasing his spiritual energy to form a shield that blocked the attack, then instantly converted the shield into a sharp projectile and launched it at the enemy archer.
Only for it to be effortlessly deflected by the brown haired man nearby, who now held a spear in his hand.
"What if we do? We dont give a damn about who you are.
Believe me when I say you’re not walking out of here alive. I’ll personally torture you until you spill everything," he said, a powerful wave of spiritual energy surging from his body, his spear now engulfed in an orange yellow aura.
Seeing that the other side had immediately gone on the attack only enraged Yun Hao even more.
He was almost tempted to throw the attack talisman at them and let them deal with the beast horde themselves, but unfortunately for him, he didn’t get the chance.
That very horde had just reached the end of the tunnel, their eyes now set on the prey before them.
He turned only to see some of his surviving men running toward him, and even his fourth stage subordinates had now reached his position, some facing the mercenaries and others turning toward the beasts.
Lang Huojin, who had been ready to engage the other group, had to stop at the sight of the sheer number of beasts now emerging from the tunnel.
His brow furrowed as he sensed the high cultivation level of every single one of them.
’Heaven’s, what is going on here?
This was what we were supposed to face? These aren’t just first and second stage beasts led by a fifth, stage one, ’
He had thought there would be some weak prey, beasts at the first or second stage, and maybe one at the fifth stage.
But now, all he saw was a sea of countless third and fourth stage beasts, led by the monstrosity looming behind them.
He could feel the monstrous aura of the beast within the group approaching slowly.
He could tell just by sensing it that it was indeed a fifth stage beast and not just any fifth stage beast.
It was at its peak.
The difference between an early and a peak fifth stage beast was enormous.
Even though they had prepared to fight something at that level, seeing the vast number of other beasts around it made them realize they wouldn’t stand a chance.
The situation fell into a temporary standoff, with the humans on one side and the beasts on the other, both sides assessing each other.
Lang Huojin and Yun Hao exchanged glances, clearly having similar thoughts.
It was obvious that alone, they were both screwed.
So for now, the only option was to cooperate and put their differences aside to survive, even if neither trusted the other in the slightest.
No words were exchanged.
Everyone understood there was only one option left.
No one backed away, and all prepared their weapons, ready to fight.
The tension was thick, and everyone was on edge. But in all the chaos, no one noticed a certain young figure sneaking into the group of gathered cultivators, his gaze fixed on the massive tunnel filled with beasts.
"It’s coming," whispered Zhu Rong, alert, as he prepared to move, ready to use the chaos about to erupt.
And as if triggered by his very thoughts,
the thin tension between the humans and the beasts shattered as a thunderous roar exploded out of nowhere, shaking everything and everyone.
No one had time to figure out what it was when, as in the next moment, the earth shook violently, and a deafening blast echoed through the entire area, causing everything to collapse into chaos.
