Chapter 16: Luring the Enemy Into the Trap
CHAPTER 16: CHAPTER 16: LURING THE ENEMY INTO THE TRAP
Stella Grant and Grant, although their names differ by only one character, receive vastly different treatment.
Before making the call, he was pounding the table and glaring, but now, he’s all smiles and speaking nicely.
Martin Lynch speaks with insinuations, and his eyes are full of inquiry.
Stella Grant was stunned for a second, unable to understand how President Wright’s call involved Silas Sutton.
Seeing her not speaking, Martin Lynch didn’t press further, smiled, walked over to the water cooler, poured her a cup himself, and handed it to her, saying, "You, you need to change your approach, too reckless."
Looking at the cup of water offered to her, Stella Grant knew Martin Lynch was offering her a graceful way out, so she took the cup, "Thank you, Mr. Lynch."
Martin Lynch smoothly said, "If similar things happen again, let me know first. Such a big issue, it’s not a problem for me, but it’s hard to explain to the higher-ups."
Stella Grant appropriately replied, "Yes, sorry for troubling you."
Martin Lynch waved his hand, "It’s not a trouble worth mentioning."
Then, Martin Lynch paused for a moment and added, "You’ve been wronged in this matter, rest assured, the company will give you an explanation."
Hearing Martin Lynch’s words, Stella Grant was calm inside but showed a trace of gratitude on her face.
Martin Lynch saw this and felt pleased, "Alright, get busy then."
With Martin Lynch’s words, Stella Grant didn’t linger, nodded, and then stepped out.
Just as she reached the door, Martin Lynch suddenly called her, "Grant."
Stella Grant stopped and turned back, "Is there anything else, Mr. Lynch?"
Martin Lynch cheerfully said, "President Wright just mentioned over the phone that there’s a project he wants to hand to us, it’s located in Oakhaven. Connect with them, confirm the time, and then take a business trip."
Stella Grant, "Yes."
After leaving Martin Lynch’s office, Stella Grant tossed the untouched paper cup directly into the trash can.
Returning to the project department, Stella Grant first called Rhodes to coordinate, confirmed the business trip would be on Friday, pondered for a while, then called President Wright to express thanks.
President Wright seemed unsurprised to receive her call, chuckled, "It’s no big deal, didn’t you help me last night?"
President Wright referred to the dinner event she attended with Silas Sutton.
Stella Grant laughed and said, "I still want to thank you."
President Wright, "It’s nothing major. Alright, Grant, I have another meeting to attend. We’ll catch up some other time."
Stella Grant smiled back, "Alright, President Wright."
After hanging up with President Wright, Stella Grant pressed her lips in thought.
President Wright didn’t mention Silas Sutton, maybe she was overthinking?
Turns out Stella Grant wasn’t overthinking.
On her business trip on Friday, she saw Silas Sutton again.
Silas Sutton remained as the center of attention; in the conference room, he sat with his legs crossed, leaning back in his chair, seeming relaxed, yet no one present dared to overlook his presence.
Perhaps noticing the doubt in Stella Grant’s eyes, the Rhodes project department head whispered to her, "President Sutton is the main investor in our project."
Surprised by the clarification, Stella Grant tilted her head slightly.
The person extended a friendly hand under the table, "Faith Ford, Sue Woods is my neighbor."
Hearing about Sue Woods’ acquaintance, Stella Grant’s lips curved, she shook hands with her, "Hello."
Faith Ford was the project head, in her early thirties, with short hair, looking very capable.
During the meeting, the leaders from Oakhaven were embarrassed by Silas Sutton.
Especially the main project leader, sweating from his forehead, his smile more painful than crying.
"President Sutton, do you have any good suggestions?"
Silas Sutton expressionless, his voice cool, "I’m the investor, you’re asking me for suggestions?"
The main project leader awkwardly laughed, not daring to speak further.
The meeting reached an impasse here, Silas Sutton sat for a while longer, tossed the file onto the conference table, said coldly, "By this time tomorrow, I want to see a satisfactory plan."
Having said that, Silas Sutton stood up and strode out.
As Silas Sutton left, the room cleared out by at least half.
Remaining were Rhodes’ party B members and Stella Grant, a party C who didn’t even qualify as party B.
After a brief silence in the conference room, the main project leader smiled at Stella Grant, looking anything but good, "Manager Grant, we can only trouble you to stay a few more days."
With no decision made by party A or B, she as party C had to wait.
Stella Grant smiled back, "No problem, I can explore Oakhaven."
Leaving the conference room, Stella Grant took the elevator to the room arranged by Rhodes upstairs.
The assistant beside her whispered in grievance, "Things not settled, why send us on a business trip."
With no one else in the elevator, Stella Grant stared at the reflective elevator wall, acted as if she hadn’t heard.
The assistant, seeing Stella Grant silent, pressed her lips and didn’t speak further.
As the elevator door opened, Stella Grant and the assistant stepped out, one after the other.
At the door, preparing to enter the password, she suddenly heard a low laugh from behind, "Like me? But I don’t like women."
Stella Grant turned back at the sound, seeing Silas Sutton standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, one hand in his pocket, squinting as he looked at her, playful and intriguing.
