Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth
Chapter 1107 - 488: Suspicion
Three o'clock in the afternoon.
Mary pushed open the office door of Squad One, "Hey, guys, the report you wanted is out."
Jackson stood up, "Good news or bad news."
"Good question... I'm really stumped." Mary seemed unsure how to answer, handing the report to Jackson, "Better read it yourself."
Jackson picked up the report and read aloud, "Analysis of skin tissues, saliva, and other trace materials from suspect Sofia matched perfectly with the DNA profile of Sofia Delarosa, the victim of a kidnapping case ten years ago. It can be confirmed they are the same person..."
After Jackson finished reading the report, the office fell silent, and everyone around him was quiet.
Though everyone had speculated this outcome before, speculation was just speculation.
Now that the report is out, they need to face new issues.
For instance, how to deal with Sofia?
Ten years ago, she was a victim of a kidnapping case, and the FBI and police had exerted great effort to rescue and find her, and now she's found at last.
Her survival is something worth celebrating, but it's hard to be happy.
Because she has changed, from a victim of kidnapping to the kidnapper herself.
This transformation is difficult to psychologically accept.
She was only ten years old when she was kidnapped, and now she's just twenty, during the most important developmental phase of her life she was always controlled by kidnappers, no one knows what happened during this time, and she herself may not be willing to say because it might cause her a second trauma.
After a long pause, Jackson said, "No matter what, I think we should tell her about this.
She indeed committed a crime, but suspects also have the right to know about their past life, which might include her best memories.
Moreover, she was very likely coerced into committing the crime; kidnapping Isa Redman may not have been her original intent."
The deputy squad leader said, "Emotionally, I agree with you, but she did commit a crime, and her actions harmed the new kidnapping case's victim, Isa Redman.
If we give her a lenient punishment, it would be unfair to Isa Redman."
Jenny nodded, "I've talked to Isa Redman, during her kidnapping, Sofia was the one who brought her food, and she was the only person who didn't harm her. Isa could feel Sofia's guilt and struggle, she even once pleaded for help from Sofia.
Sofia didn't rescue her, but she also didn't inform the other accomplices.
So I agree with Jackson, Sofia was very likely coerced into committing the crime."
Luke waved his hand, interrupting their discussion, "I'll report this matter to Reid.
Jenny, you are responsible for contacting Sofia's stepmother and informing her of the investigation results."
"Yes, sir."
"Everyone else, finish your tasks, and we'll discuss this matter tonight," Luke said as he took the file to the chief's office.
...
Eight o'clock in the evening.
The case was solved, the hostage successfully rescued; originally, it should be a day worth celebrating.
But because of Sofia, everyone felt a bit uneasy, no one mentioned going to the bar to celebrate, so they all went their separate ways.
Luke invited Daisy for dinner.
He's been busy these past two days, and Luke was too lazy to cook, so he just picked a French restaurant.
Sometimes the choice of restaurant isn't just about liking the food but also enjoying the atmosphere.
When Luke arrived at the restaurant, he ordered in advance, and sat by the table playing on his phone, searching for news on the kidnapping case. It was mostly about the abduction of real estate tycoon Gary Sane's son, with all kinds of speculation, some even saying he might have been kidnapped by an Italian mafia family.
Luke thought Anthony must be having a headache right now.
There was no news about Isa Redman being kidnapped; logically speaking, since the case was solved, the suspect arrested, and the hostage rescued, news of the kidnapping case should be spreading to the media through various channels.
However, at Luke's suggestion, Reid suppressed the news about this case, keeping it under wraps, and forbade any department's officers from leaking it.
The reason Luke proposed this was mainly Sofia's sensitive identity; once exposed to the media, things might become unpredictable.
"Tap tap..." familiar footsteps sounded.
Daisy walked to the table, placed her purse on it, and sat across from Luke, "When did you get here?"
Luke glanced at his watch and casually said, "Half an hour ago."
"You came early."
Luke smiled, reaching out his right hand to hold her slender left hand, "I wanted to see you sooner."
"Didn't you come back from Hawaii long ago? Why didn't you ask me out earlier?"
"I've been busy with a case, it's pretty urgent," Luke picked up a decanter and poured Daisy a glass of red wine.
"Can you talk about it?"
"It's still confidential."
"Then never mind," Daisy shrugged, "Did you order?"
"Yes, I ordered the steak you like, baked snails, asparagus soup, and orange-scented French toast."
"Thanks, I'll enjoy it," Daisy raised her wine glass and clinked glasses with Luke.
Actually, Luke came today with another purpose, which is to consult about how Sofia's ordeal might affect the case verdict.
Luke knows once Sofia's ordeal is publicized, she'll definitely get a lighter sentence; it's just that he can't quite gauge the degree.
