Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth
Chapter 1119 - 492: Mole
After four o'clock in the afternoon.
The door to the captain's office was knocked on once again.
Anthony walked into the office.
Luke stood up to greet, "Perfect timing, I was just about to get in touch with you."
Anthony pulled out a chair and sat down, "Okay, tell me what's bothering you, so I can be happy about it."
Luke said, "This morning the police informed Sofia's stepmother and nanny to come for a recognition, but both of them feel that Sofia is not the victim of the kidnapping case from ten years ago."
"Come on, DNA identification has already confirmed it. What does it matter if the stepmother doesn't acknowledge it?
I feel you guys at the police are making a bit of a redundant move."
Luke explained, "Sofia was the victim of the kidnapping case from ten years ago, and the police have now found her. Notifying the family is a necessary procedure. Her father has already passed away, so we can only notify her stepmother."
"Then what's there to hesitate about? DNA identification is far more reliable than the stepmother's words."
"You're right, confirming Sofia's identity should be based on the DNA identification, without needing the stepmother's acknowledgment.
However, as a family member, she has the right to question, and the police can't shut her mouth and stop her from speaking.
What the police need to investigate now is whether her questioning is genuine or driven by interest considerations."
Anthony asked, "Then why call the nanny over?"
"This nanny took care of Sofia when she was very young. Their close relationship might help her recall details of the kidnapping case from ten years ago."
Anthony took out a cigarette, lighting it, "I came to see you to also ask about the investigation progress on the kidnapping case from ten years ago."
Luke asked, "Did you find a connection between the FBI mole and the kidnapping case from ten years ago?"
Anthony put the lighter into his pocket, "Indeed, there's a guy who makes me quite suspicious."
"Can you tell me about it?"
"Of course, you're one of us at the FBI, and if I didn't trust you, I wouldn't have come to you."
Luke smiled, investigating internal moles is a rather taboo subject, perhaps it's precisely because of Luke's transcendent status that Anthony is more willing to communicate with him.
Anthony slowly said, "That guy is named Creasy Hoskin, the head of the Information Resources Division at the FBI's Los Angeles office. His main job content is integrating information data, and all the cases handled by the FBI are stored in the computer archive.
He's been in this department for over ten years, starting from an ordinary staff member to becoming the team leader, and he knows the entire department inside out.
The reason why I'm suspicious is because he's the only one who has used his access to review the cases of Little Gary Sane kidnapping, Isa Redman kidnapping, and the kidnapping case from ten years ago."
Luke said, "The Isa Redman kidnapping case has always been under my investigation, why is it stored in the FBI's computer archive?"
Anthony laughed, "Ever since I suspected there's a mole in the FBI, I've been thinking about how to catch that mole. I initially ruled out the field personnel, hypothesizing that the problem might be with the office staff.
So, within the department, I claimed to jointly investigate the Isa Redman kidnapping case with you. This morning, we even appeared on the news together; everyone knows we're close.
I wanted the mole to think I obtained the Isa Redman kidnapping case information through my connection with you.
If he's connected to the kidnappers, he would definitely be concerned about the case and check the files.
So, I had my staff upload the kidnapping case details to the FBI database following protocol, and he checked the information this noon."
Luke asked, "Isn't his job precisely about integrating information data? Could it be that he's checking because of work reasons?"
Anthony laughed, "You overestimate their diligence. Generally, if the case isn't closed, they don't upload the case information and data to the database.
Both kidnapping cases are still open, and checking now is completely unnecessary and doesn't comply with the procedure."
Anthony extinguished the cigarette and continued, "Furthermore, I discovered another situation.
Half a year ago, the network of the Information Resources Division was attacked by hackers, and the entire division cut off its connection with the main network for regional antivirus efforts.
A lot of data was lost back then.
At that time, he was the direct person in charge, which further increased my suspicion of him."
Luke asked, "What's his motive?"
"After identifying the two aforementioned doubts, I also sent someone to investigate his economic situation. This guy's credit card is maxed out, and he's on the brink of bankruptcy.
What's even more tragic is that four months ago, his ex-wife divorced him." Anthony sighed, "This guy is totally capable of making a desperate move, doing something irrational. I've seen too many similar people."
Luke wondered, "Why did his ex-wife divorce him?"
Anthony shrugged, "That's what I want to know as well."
"Since his ex-wife chose to divorce, it means she probably knows something. I think we should talk to his ex-wife."
Anthony nodded, "Good idea, do you have time? We can go talk to his ex-wife together."
"Why am I needed?"
Anthony immediately replied, "Because you understand these three kidnapping cases, you're the most suitable candidate."
"That reason won't convince me."
"Okay, I don't know how to face his ex-wife, should I tell her, 'I'm with the FBI, I'm here to investigate your ex-husband.'
His ex-wife would answer, 'My ex-husband is also with the FBI.'
Come on, that would be embarrassing.
His ex-wife wouldn't trust me.
But you're different, you can use your identity as a police officer to talk to his ex-wife."
