Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth
Chapter 82: Diary
Ultimately, Thompson won the auction for warehouse No. 94.
Boreet led the crowd of bidders to the next warehouse.
Thompson and his partner began to clean up the warehouse, with Luke standing by watching.
Thompson walked over and confronted him, "Hey, what are you still doing here? Not convinced? Want to have a go?
Come on, I won't let you off this time.
Kabool, record our video, I want to teach Andrew how men should fight."
"I'm not here to fight, I just want to see how you deal with the junk you bought for five hundred US Dollars. Your impulsiveness is really quite amusing."
Thompson lectured, "Kid, we've been in this business longer than you, so don't underestimate us."
"Well, we shall see." Luke's purpose was simple: he wanted to stay to confirm whether the warehouse contained any items Anna had lost.
Thompson's companion interjected, "Buddy, whatever beef you have with Thompson, this warehouse is ours now, you'd better keep your distance."
Luke stepped back and stood at the door of another warehouse.
Thompson's partner complained, "Why are you attracting the cops for no reason?"
Thompson glanced at Luke, unsure of his intentions, "Don't bother with him, let's just take care of our own."
With a 24-hour time limit, the two wasted no time and began to move items out of the warehouse, categorizing them by their use and value.
The two of them moved the gray box together, which was covered in a thick layer of dust, thankfully they had put on masks beforehand.
Thompson even deliberately swept the dust toward Luke.
Luke also put on a mask and stepped back further.
Thompson rubbed his hands, "OK, let's see what treasures we have here, I can barely wait."
Thompson opened the lid of the box and took out an exquisite jewelry box with a little lock hanging on it.
Thompson directly knocked off the lock and opened the jewelry box.
"Wow... look what we've found!" Thompson's voice was filled with surprise.
His partner leaned in, his voice changing, "A pearl necklace, diamonds, and even a ruby...
Thompson, we're rich."
"Yeah..."
Thompson yelled in excitement, hugging his partner's head and planting a fierce kiss on it.
"Kid, do you see that? See what we found in the warehouse?" Thompson excitedly pointed at Luke, "This could have been yours, but you lack experience and didn't persist, so now, it belongs to me.
I want to teach you a lesson, remember this: solving problems is not just about brute force, you have to use your brain."
Thompson and his partner, elated and triumphant, looked at Luke with a smirk.
He was glad he didn't drive Luke away, as the highlight moments always need an audience.
Luke was now their audience.
Thompson was like a general who had won a battle, already planning how he would describe his heroic actions of the day at the dinner table so that his son would know how he had defeated Luke, the scoundrel.
Not only were the two men happy, but Luke was happy as well.
He had seen the pearl necklace and the red gem in the file and was almost certain that the contents of the warehouse were the items Anna had lost.
These were the stolen goods from the 'Telson Manor Disappearance Case', and from now on they belonged to the police.
Luke called Susan's cell phone, asking her to bring the tech team to the scene, and in addition, to call for an ambulance.
After hanging up the phone, Luke said to Thompson's duo, "Hey, can you listen to me for a moment?"
"Kid, are you green with envy? Do you regret it so much you want to cry? Go ahead and cry if you want, we won't laugh at you, ha ha..." Thompson laughed heartily, finally he could hold his head up high in front of his son.
"I just want to tell you that the most important thing is to be happy. Ups and downs are normal, don't have too high expectations for anything. These things are just material possessions, you can't take them with you when you're born or when you die, don't place too much importance on them." Luke began to mentally prepare the two, fearing they wouldn't be able to bear the truth once they learned it.
"What nonsense are you talking about, you're out of your mind," Thompson said scornfully, already completely immersed in the joy of acquiring the treasure.
Luke shook his head, that was exactly why he wanted to bid for the storage unit—he had known in advance that the contents might be stolen goods, and even if he won the bid, he could remain calm.
But these people didn't know this, and acquiring the treasure with such high hopes, to have it possibly taken away by the police, would be nothing short of tragedy...
Having learned that Thompson and his partner had found treasures, more Treasure Hunters gathered around, but everyone tacitly maintained a certain distance.
A voice echoed in Luke's mind, [Complete one adventure experience, adventure card activated and used.]
...
Half an hour later, the sound of an ambulance rang out.
Susan arrived with her team.
David looked at Luke with a complex expression, "You borrowed money from me to bid on the storage unit?"
"Yes."
"You really know how to stir up trouble," he said.
Luke spread his hands, "It's not me stirring up trouble, it's those two who are causing problems. If I could have won the bid for the storage, none of this shit would have happened."
With Susan's arrival, in addition to the crime scene investigation team, there were patrol officers who were responsible for maintaining order and dispersing the Treasure Hunters.
Seeing this situation, Thompson and his companion were also stunned, "Luke, did you call these people here? What are you trying to do?"
Susan said, "Mr. Thompson, we received a tip that the suspect might have hidden the stolen goods in storage unit 94, and I dispatched Luke to obtain the rights to the storage unit through auction.
I hear you obstructed his normal bidding due to a personal grudge.
Your actions have caused significant difficulties to our investigation and also exposed the police operation. Can you give me a reasonable explanation?"
"What?" Thompson was dumbfounded, "You're saying the stuff in the storage unit is stolen?"
"Correct."
Thompson's face showed anger, "I don't believe it. The stuff in this storage is mine, nobody else is going to take it away. You're all in on it together, certainly trying to con me out of my treasure, I won't be fooled."
It seemed Susan was prepared, as she took out several old photographs, "Take a look at these pictures and see if they match the items in the storage unit."
Thompson carefully examined the photos, "Grey boxes, pearl necklaces, red gems..."
Thompson's expression turned uglier, "What's going to happen to these items?"
Susan said, "These items are currently evidence, and will be returned to the families of the victims afterward."
Thompson shouted, "What about us? We paid money to bid on these things!"
The deputy said, "There are no explicit regulations for storage auction, but in my career in law enforcement, I've encountered similar situations; the Los Angeles Police Department compensated the bidders with twice the auction price.
You can apply to the Los Angeles Police Department for this compensation afterwards."
Thompson said discontentedly, "These items are worth at least a hundred thousand US Dollars, and you're compensating us five hundred US Dollars—are you joking?"
The deputy said, "It's better than nothing, right?
In most cases, when you purchase stolen goods, it's simply confiscated with no compensation at all. You're already lucky."
"Fuck…" Thompson became hysterical, unable to accept this outcome. These treasures were supposed to be all his, but now they were exchanged for just five hundred US dollars.
Thompson and his companion were 'persuaded' to leave the storage, and the police began to take over the scene.
Luke shook his head, "Poor guys, I did warn them."
Next to him, Marcus's voice rang out in surprise, "Hey, buddy, look what I found!
A diary belonging to Tony Smith."
