Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth
Chapter 835 - 392: New Discovery_2
The deputy chief switched to another set of photos, including one of the victim, the pianist Kilo Jones, from a different murder case.
Dasha Elman shook her head again after seeing them.
The deputy chief brought out another set of photos, which included pictures of the Morrison couple involved in the case.
Once again, Dasha Elman did not recognize anyone.
Finally, the deputy chief showed photos of the Gray couple, whom Luke was investigating.
Dasha Elman still shook her head.
If Dasha Elman recognized the people in the photos, the two cases would have a certain connection, but now Dasha Elman knew nothing, leaving the deputy chief a bit disappointed.
"Did Jens Hauley ever offend anyone?"
"No, he is a man with a strong sense of justice, always kind to others, and gets along well with neighbors and colleagues."
"Has Jens Hauley shown any unusual behavior recently?"
Dasha Elman thought for a moment and said, "I... don't know how to put it.
His mood has been unusual lately. He used to accompany me shopping or strolling in the park during his breaks.
But he's been very busy recently, often working overtime.
Especially over the past month, I've felt he's very tense, and his smiles are becoming less frequent.
I can sense that something is troubling him. I've asked, but he won't say."
The deputy chief pressed, "Do you think what troubles him is work, home life, or something else?"
Dasha Elman replied, "I think it might be work because he's been so busy lately."
"Besides the house you are living in together, does Jens Hauley have any other residence?"
"No.
He did rent another place before, but he's already vacated it." Dasha Elman said, then seemed to recall something, "Oh right, after he vacated the place, he rented a storage unit to store some items he no longer needs."
"Where is that storage unit?"
"I've only been there once, can't quite recall the name... It's near Enke Street."
The deputy chief took out the key he found in Jens Hauley's bedroom, "Have you seen this key before?"
Dasha Elman took a look at the plastic bag, "Yes, this seems to be the key to the storage unit."
...
After completing the record with Georgia Gray, Luke had her taken to the hospital for a check-up.
After investigating the scene at the holiday home, Luke returned to the police station.
Now, he was sitting in his office, reviewing the contents of the record taken from Georgia Gray.
Previously, when Luke took Georgia Gray's statement, she was somewhat tense and terrified.
Considering that she had just been rescued from a secret room, these emotions seemed normal.
Initially, Georgia Gray deliberately covered for her husband. Luke noticed signs of lying, which was fairly obvious.
Subsequently, under Luke's pressing questions, Georgia Gray admitted to having an affair with the victim, being caught by her husband, and then her husband shot and killed the person.
The account Georgia Gray provided matched the police's findings, indicating her husband likely was the killer who murdered Kilo Jones.
After returning to the police station, Luke felt something was amiss and reviewed the record again, noticing that although Georgia Gray explained certain situations, such as why she was wearing dress shoes on the scene, she was vague on some key issues.
For example, regarding the murder weapon, Georgia Gray only knew it was a black handgun, but she was unclear on its whereabouts, only saying her husband dealt with it.
Fair enough, Luke temporarily accepted this, as it is relatively easy to hide a handgun.
Luke also inquired about the victim's clothes, shoes, and personal belongings. Georgia Gray similarly claimed she was unaware, stating her husband handled it.
However, according to Georgia Gray's account, after killing the victim, she and her husband were together the entire time, and these items were bloodstained; her husband couldn't have kept them with him constantly.
If her husband went out to dispose of these things, Georgia Gray couldn't have been completely unaware.
Of course, Luke merely found this suspicious; it wasn't enough to prove Georgia Gray lied. Perhaps she was indeed indifferent and didn't pay attention to these details.
Subsequently, Luke turned on the law enforcement recorder to view the video of Georgia Gray's statement.
This time, Luke watched very closely, scrutinizing Georgia Gray's expressions, occasionally replaying the video.
Luke reviewed the recording twice, increasingly sensing something unusual in Georgia Gray's demeanor. Her tension and panic might not have stemmed from just being freed from the secret room; it could be due to lying to the police.
However, these were merely Luke's suspicions without evidence to prove Georgia Gray lied; concrete evidence was necessary.
What if Georgia Gray indeed lied, what was she hiding?
Luke returned once more to the Gray family's holiday home.
He focused his investigation on the secret room; if Georgia Gray lied, it meant her being trapped could have been staged, or orchestrated by herself.
If that's the case, she must have had a way to escape.
At the time, Georgia Gray had handcuffs on both her wrists and ankles, with her hands cuffed behind her back. To leave the secret room alone, she would need to unlock the handcuffs first.
Luke led a thorough search of the secret room and discovered a key under the drawer of a wooden cabinet, well-hidden there, glued beneath the drawer, rendering it almost invisible—its space too small for hiding other items.
After finding the key, Luke successfully unlocked the handcuffs on Georgia Gray.
And the door to the secret room could be opened with a code.
Georgia Gray could have rescued herself, suggesting that her entrapment was likely self-directed.
But why would she do this?
What was she trying to hide?
Luke recalled her statement, where Georgia Gray, while pretending to trust her husband completely, initially helped him cover up, but ultimately, in the recorded statement, shifted all blame onto her husband.
Assuming her husband didn't kill Kilo Jones, nor drug her?
Then, who was the actual murderer?
Who else could have appeared at the Gray house at that time?
Georgia Gray!
All things considered, she was the prime suspect.
But why would she want to kill Kilo Jones?
And why frame her own husband?
Where had her husband gone?
And was Officer Jens Hauley's murder related to her?
The questions in Luke's mind not only failed to diminish but increased.
Even though he found the handcuff key in the secret room, it still couldn't serve as solid evidence against Georgia Gray.
Luke still needed more evidence to prove that Georgia Gray lied to the police.
Walking out of the Gray family's holiday home, the sky had already darkened. He wasn't planning to return to the police station, intending to wait for the forensics team's results before proceeding with the next steps.
"Ring ring..."
His phone rang.
"Hello."
"Luke, have some time? Let's have dinner together tonight." Orty's voice came through the phone.
After days of continuous case work, Luke was running on fumes; it was time to relax and treat himself to a good meal. "Are you buying?"
