Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth
Chapter 855 - 400 Who Are You (Happy New Year to everyone!)
The deputy team said, "I'm not very surprised. Don't forget Officer Jens Hauley; this isn't the first time they've killed a cop."
Luke said thoughtfully, "It seems we need to shift the focus of our investigation this time."
Previously, Luke had focused mainly on investigating two homicide cases, but now the situation was different. They had already solved the highway dumping case. There were few clues in the police officer murder case, but it could be confirmed to be related to the stolen painting case.
Since there were few clues in the police officer murder case, the focus should be on the painting robbery. Catching this gang of robbers might also solve the police officer's murder case effortlessly.
Immediately, Luke reassigned tasks.
The investigation focused on three areas. The first was reviewing old cases; this gang was bold, meticulous, skilled, and equipped. They must have a criminal record, to be investigated by the deputy team.
The second was the stolen goods, not the ten robbed paintings but the valuables in the Gray couple's safe alongside the handgun, handled by Little Black and Jackson.
The third investigation direction was the Getty Museum. Luke planned to personally visit the Getty Museum to understand the situation and see if any more clues about the robbery could be found.
After dinner, Luke and Port headed to the Getty Museum.
The Getty Museum was still hosting its regular exhibitions, with heavily armed security guards visible from a distance, evidently on high alert due to the painting robbery.
Port observed the security personnel and cameras inside the museum, "With such tight security measures, stealing a painting here would've been difficult."
Luke said, "That's why the robbers created a diversion and acted during the transportation."
Port lowered his voice, "The robbers were able to ambush in advance, which means they knew the exact transportation time and location. Could there be an insider from the museum, perhaps the murdered Officer Jens Hauley?"
Luke nodded slightly. Although he didn't want to easily suspect a police officer, the $200,000 and the museum floor plan found in Jens Hauley's warehouse indicated a high possibility.
Port pondered, "If Jens Hauley was the insider, why was he killed? Because of unequal shares?"
Luke had considered this question too. Jens Hauley was killed on the night of December 25, while the paintings were robbed in the early hours of December 30. Since the paintings hadn't been stolen when Jens was killed, it couldn't be about unequal shares.
It's more likely Jens wanted to withdraw, and the robbers killed him to prevent leaks.
Another possibility is the robbers learned the painting's route from Jens and killed him in advance to prevent the police from finding them through him.
After showing his credentials, Luke met with the museum's deputy director, Shukri Brad, who was fully responsible for the museum's security measures.
Shukri Brad invited Luke and his partner into his office, scrutinizing them as he asked, "Which department are you two officers from?"
In just a few days, he had met several groups investigating the case.
"I'm Detective Port from the Robbery and Murder Department, and this is our Captain Li," Port introduced, then, recalling the two imposters as detectives, added, "Have people from the Robbery and Murder Department come to investigate before?"
"No," Shukri Brad shook his head, "I've heard of the infamous Robbery and Murder Department. Are you also investigating the stolen painting case?"
Luke asked, "Do you know Jens Hauley?"
"No."
Luke showed a photo of Jens Hauley, "He was a police officer who previously worked here as a part-time security guard."
"Sorry, I'm overwhelmed, and we've recently hired many new guards... I didn't recognize him immediately.
What happened to him?"
"He's dead. To be precise, he was shot and killed."
"Is it related to the stolen painting case?"
"We came to the museum to investigate this point."
Shukri Brad clasped his hands together, "Is there anything I can assist you with?"
"You weren't familiar with Jens Hauley?"
"No."
"Could Jens Hauley access the painting's transportation route?"
"No, only a few security personnel know the painting's transportation route. He was just an ordinary guard and shouldn't know."
"Who knows it?"
"Uh..." Shukri Brad hesitated, "Do you suspect they leaked the painting's transportation route?"
Seeing his hesitation, Luke changed his approach, "I need a list of all your museum security personnel."
"OK," Shukri Brad agreed.
Although this range was broader, it was less targeted.
Shukri Brad walked to his desk, took a key from a drawer, opened his safe, took out a document, and handed it to Luke, "This is what you need."
Luke took the document and started reviewing the security personnel's data.
The records were very detailed, including names, ages, heights, skin colors, eye colors, and hair colors.
Luke flipped through a few and found the deceased Jens Hauley's information, which also recorded his primary role as a police officer in the Southern District.
He continued browsing and saw a familiar name.
Davo Gali!
Primary Occupation: Night Detective at the Southern District, Detective Chief.
Both Southern District officers worked as part-time security at the Getty Museum. Is this a coincidence?
Indeed, coincidences do exist in this world.
But what if it wasn't a coincidence?
Thinking of Davo Gali lying on the stretcher, four words surfaced in Luke's mind: silencing witnesses.
Luke also thought of Anthony, recalling their conversation about the villa's bomb. At the time, Anthony said it was a trap.
Back then, Luke hadn't thought much about it. Now, it seems this so-called trap wasn't aimed at the police but solely at Davo Gali.
The other officers were merely buried alongside Davo Gali.
Anthony must have figured out Davo Gali was problematic and went after him, but unfortunately, it was too late.
Luke gazed at Shukri Brad, "Could Davo Gali access the painting's transportation route?"
Shukri Brad nodded slightly, "Of course, he's the Detective Chief in the Southern District and also a security consultant for the museum."
Therefore, Davo Gali could access the painting's transportation route, making him more likely to be the insider the robbers had inside the museum.
But what about Jens Hauley?
What role did he play in all this?
Probably only Davo Gali knew.
The robbers silencing him just proves his importance.
...
Night.
Bonnett Hospital.
After a round of treatment, Davo Gali's injuries finally stabilized, although his body was still very weak.
He lay on the hospital bed, wrapped in bandages, right hand attached to an IV. His vacant gaze was fixed on the ceiling, as the anesthetic had worn off, and waves of pain surged through his body.
It was very uncomfortable, but at least he was still alive.
Why was there a bomb in the box?
That's not what was said before.
Those ungrateful bastards actually wanted to eliminate me too.
True, if they killed me, no one would know their identities.
Fortunately, I'm lucky and alive.
I won't let you get away; even to the ends of the earth, I will avenge this!
A faint "creak" sound.
The door opened.
A woman in a blue-green nurse's uniform walked in. She was black, wearing a mask, and her appearance was unclear.
Her movements were light as she turned and closed the door, locking it.
She walked to Davo Gali's bedside, glanced at him, took a syringe and a vial from her pocket, and drew the drug into the syringe.
She shifted her gaze to the IV bottle, inserted the syringe into the infusion bag, and injected the drug into the infusion bag.
Davo Gali's eyes widened with terror and anger, as he mustered all his strength to shout, "What are you doing?"
The black nurse didn't reply.
Davo Gali was too weak; even though he used all his strength, only two people could hear him,
"Who are you?"
