Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth
Chapter 894 - 416: Unexpected
"Ha..."
Luke yawned as he walked down from the second floor, greeting Li Zhaofeng and the little fatty sitting in the dining room.
"Good morning."
The little fatty set the table while saying, "You got up late."
Luke sat down at the dining table, "Just in time."
Because he was followed last night, Luke didn't sleep well. If those two dared to follow him again, Luke would definitely settle the scores with them.
"It's ready." Li Zhaofeng started scooping out the dumplings.
The little fatty spread his hands, "Didn't we just eat dumplings last night?"
Li Zhaofeng drained the dumplings, "It's a tradition from our old hometown."
The little fatty asked curiously, "Dad, how many years have you been in America?"
Li Zhaofeng thought for a moment, "Almost thirty years."
"How long has it been since you went back to China?"
Li Zhaofeng thought for a moment, "Nearly ten years."
The little fatty curiously said, "You're always talking about tradition, but you haven't gone back to China."
Li Zhaofeng placed two plates of dumplings on the table, "Ten years ago, when your granduncle passed away, your grandpa no longer had anything to hold him back, and he stopped planning to go back.
Plus, the cost of going back is too high, aside from tickets, there are all sorts of social obligations and even relatives borrowing money.
It's basically a case of lending and not getting it back, no matter how much, it's unsettling."
Li Zhaofeng placed a plate of dumplings in front of himself, "Do you want some pickled garlic?"
"I do." Luke hadn't had pickled garlic in a long time, and dumplings with pickled garlic had a special flavor.
Li Zhaofeng held a glass jar, inside were green garlic cloves pickled in vinegar. He picked a few for his elder son, then asked his younger son, "Do you want some?"
"No, I don't like having a strange taste in my mouth."
Li Zhaofeng said, "Pickled garlic doesn't have a strong taste, eating a couple won't matter."
The little fatty glanced twice and shook his head, "Forget it, the color looks weird."
Luke, however, ate with relish; since it's the New Year, eating some traditional food adds to the atmosphere.
The little fatty didn't like garlic, but thoroughly enjoyed the beef and scallion dumplings, with their thin skins and generous fillings, easily eating them in one or two bites each.
While eating, he mumbled, "Dad, what plans do we have today?"
"We're going to your grandpa's for a family reunion lunch, and then it'll be like we've completed the New Year celebration. In the afternoon, I'd like to take you both to Chinatown for a walk. It was late the last time we went, and we didn't have time to explore.
There are still some nice things there." Li Zhaofeng hoped his two sons could learn more about Chinese traditions.
In this regard, although Luke didn't talk much, he was more familiar and more adaptable to Chinese traditional culture.
Jack was a bit behind, more out of curiosity, but having curiosity is good; the more you learn, the more you understand.
The little fatty asked, "Will Auntie's family go at noon too?"
"Yes." After speaking, Li Zhaofeng explained, "According to the tradition of our hometown, we generally go to the maternal family on the second day of the Lunar New Year, but in New York, the Spring Festival isn't a holiday. Everyone has their own things to do, so it's easier to just gather together."
The little fatty said, "California has already listed the Spring Festival as a legal holiday. Today is the first year it's officially implemented; our school got a day off. That's also why it was relatively easy for me to take a long vacation."
Li Zhaofeng nodded, "That's a good sign, hopefully New York's government will catch up."
"Ring ring ring..." Luke's phone rang.
He picked up the phone and saw it was Matthew's number.
"I'll take a call."
"Are you not eating dumplings?" The little fatty finished his portion, staring at the dumplings on Luke's plate. Luke had been dipping his in sauce, leaving the remaining dumplings untouched.
Luke "..."
I'm just taking a call.
The little fatty nodded to himself, "OK, I get it."
The little fatty, being action-oriented, started eating the dumplings on Luke's plate.
Luke "..."
I didn't say anything, how do you get it?
What else could Luke say? He couldn't very well end this long-distance call; he could only comfort himself with the thought of a big meal at noon.
Eating less now, eating well at noon to make up for it.
Luke returned to his bedroom, pressed the answer button, "This is Luke."
"Captain, I checked that license plate number; it's a cloned plate, the original car should be a white Toyota."
"Any other information?"
"No."
"Got it."
"Anything else?"
"Thanks, I'll buy you a drink when I get back."
Luke hung up the phone, not really surprised by the result.
If someone dared to use their own car to follow him, that would be more surprising to Luke.
Who exactly are they?
The clues obtained are too scant to guess.
The best way is to wait for them to follow again, and Luke will ask them directly.
During the inquiry, some misunderstandings and minor clashes might occur, so Luke needed to have a backup plan.
Luke thought for a moment, picked up the phone, and dialed Anthony's number, "Hey, is it convenient to talk?"
"Yeah, you want to invite me for a drink?"
"When I return.
I'm in New York right now, and I've run into a little trouble."
"What are you doing in New York?"
"My dad is over here, so I'm here to spend the New Year with him."
"The traditional Chinese festival?"
"Yes."
"Thanks to your dad, I got an extra day off."
Luke laughed, "Then there are a lot of people you need to thank."
"OK, tell me, what happened?"
"Last night, I was followed. I had it checked; it's a cloned car."
