Love After Divorce: Her Second Chance
Chapter 129; Whatever happens
CHAPTER 129: CHAPTER 129; WHATEVER HAPPENS
Old Madam Shen’s eyes widened, her lips curling into a bitter sneer. "I knew it... That woman has always been ungrateful. All these years, I told you she was scheming, now she proves it! A child?" She let out a cold laugh, though her hands trembled slightly. "While living under our roof, she was probably warming another man’s bed. And now she dares to take that bastard child and humiliate our Shen family? How dare she? What kind of promiscuous woman is this? I warned him but he never listens..."
Her words struck the air like shards of ice, the maids lowering their heads further.
Old Master Shen’s brows knotted tightly, but he said nothing, his jaw hardening before asking curiously.
"What kind of armed men were they?" Who were these people and could they get into such a heavily guarded home?
"The man was cold and distant, he had a mask on his face snaking around and covering a small part of the face, and they other ones wore masks and military uniform.." the maid explained it out and when he heard it was a masked man, he immediately thought of someone who always heard of but hadn’t crossed paths with. That dangerous man from the underworld..
"The mask is jade and has some shining white Jade embedded too?" If it were someone he thought of, they wouldn’t have the guts to fight against this person. They couldn’t dare to launch a fight against that man.
"Yes... It’s just like you have said!" The maids nodded their heads worriedly. Because this person didn’t seem to be simple.
Old Master Shen’s eyes darkened, a shadow flickering across his expression. "So... it is him."
Madam Shen turned sharply, "You know this person?"
He didn’t answer immediately, his gaze fixed on the sterile floor as if the answer lay hidden there. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, almost dangerous. "If it’s the man I’m thinking of... even the most powerful families in the capital wouldn’t dare cross him. For him to come personally to our City... it means Yueyao’s ties to him run far deeper than we imagined."
Madam Shen gave a derisive snort. "Ties? Don’t dress it up, it’s filth. That woman has been plotting from the start, seducing our son while keeping another man in her shadow. And now look at my son. It’s disgusting."
The maids shifted uncomfortably, but Old Master Shen’s gaze didn’t move from the floor. "If she is with him willingly... she’s beyond our reach. If she isn’t... then the situation is even more dangerous. Too complicated.."
"Dangerous for us? No," Madam Shen’s voice cut like glass. "It’s dangerous for her. Let her rot wherever she is. If she thinks she can disgrace the Shen family and still walk away breathing, she’s more foolish than I thought."
Old Master Shen’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t argue. Instead, he turned toward the glowing red "IN OPERATION" sign, his voice low and measured, "We will deal with her. But first... we keep Shen Xiao alive."
The maids bowed their heads, but in their eyes lingered the image of that masked man, jade and white gleaming under dim light, an image they would not soon forget.
Three hours later, the hallway’s sterile quiet was broken by the slow, deliberate footsteps of the surgeon. His pale blue scrubs were darker now at the sleeves, his mask hanging limp in one hand.
"Mr. and Madam Shen," he began, voice steady but carrying the exhaustion of the hours just past. "The surgery is complete."
Madam Shen rose instantly, shawl slipping from her shoulders. "And my son?"
The doctor’s gaze moved to her, then to Old Master Shen. "We repaired the fractures in both legs with titanium plates and screws. The internal bleeding was significant, but we managed to control it. He’s stable... for now. The next forty-eight hours will be critical. Infection, blood clots, organ strain, any of these could still be fatal."
Old Madam Shen’s knuckles whitened against the chair’s armrest, but she forced her chin high. "And Bai Zhi?"
"Her injuries were severe as well. Multiple facial fractures, broken ribs, and lung contusion. She’s in the recovery ward, under close observation. She will need reconstructive surgery once she’s stronger."
Old Master Shen’s face didn’t change, but his eyes darkened. "They will both live?"
The doctor hesitated, then gave a small nod. "If there are no complications."
Behind him, two nurses wheeled Shen Xiao past on a gurney, the steady beep of the heart monitor cutting through the heavy air. His face was deathly pale, eyelids fluttering faintly beneath the harsh fluorescent lights.
Madam Shen reached out, brushing the back of her hand against his, her lips tightening. "You will survive," she whispered, more command than comfort.
Bai Zhi followed minutes later, her face a swollen mask of bruises and stitched wounds, oxygen tube looping over her cheeks. She did not look at them this time.
As the stretchers disappeared into the ICU, Old Master Shen finally exhaled, his voice low but sharp. "Post guards at the door. No one enters without my permission."
The maids exchanged glances. They had seen the look in his eyes before, cold calculation taking root.
Somewhere in the quiet, the faint hum of the hospital lights seemed to grow louder, as if the walls themselves were waiting for what the Shen family would do next.
Madam Shen’s grip tightened on the armrest, knuckles turning white. "So she truly is that kind of woman...," she hissed under her breath. "Pretending to be pitiful all these years, only to run off with another man and even bear his child."
Old Master Shen’s gaze was heavy, unreadable, but there was a faint twitch in his jaw. "This is no time for baseless accusations," he said flatly, though his tone lacked its usual authority.
But Madam Shen wasn’t listening. She waved the maids away, muttering, "Hmph... no wonder she never truly fit in here. Scheming little fox."
