CHAPTER 21: RESIGNATION

"Look how old-fashioned you are! Everyone uses Whatsapp now, and you’re still texting."

"Come on, what era are you still concerned about?"

"My godfather said two thousand for one night, which is not a low price. If you are a virgin, he will give you another four thousand."

"Last time you were talking about a birthday treat, but do you have the money? We won’t go to those low-class places."

Luis frowned as he read every word. He knew that the school atmosphere was open now, but it was not open to this extent.

Taking a deep breath, Ruth walked into the kitchen, picking up the bowls and chopsticks while saying, "Son in law, Mom was a bit drunk last night and said some nonsense. I forgot what it was, don’t take it to heart."

"Got it, Mom!"

Luis hummed a tune while continuing to cook.

Ruth, holding the bowls and chopsticks, still felt uneasy and walked back into the kitchen, saying softly, "Son in law, when I said my hand was sore, I was just mocking those bitches. How could you take it so seriously and actually buy me another bracelet?"

"It’s only right to respect Mom. You can wear it however you like, why care about those bitches?"

Luis smiled gently.

The Mother In Law’s mission line hadn’t updated yet, which puzzled Luis a bit, so he acted normally, focusing entirely on his wife’s storyline.

When Lily returned, the delicious dishes were already laid out on the table.

Steamed spare ribs with black bean sauce, beef stir fried with green peppers, a plate of ginger scallion crab, a bought marinated pig’s ear, and a ginseng black chicken soup made for a rich spread.

"Delicious, son in law, your cooking is great."

Having let go of her worries, Ruth’s smile was noticeably warmer.

"Mom, this soup is especially good, nourishing and warming. Try it."

Seeing her husband praised, Lily, proud, quickly served her mother a bowl of soup.

The dinner atmosphere was rarely this harmonious. Before, Ruth didn’t want to cook, Lily came home late and cooked in a rush, and Luis, focused on not wanting to stay here, would just boil noodles, so such moments were few.

"Mom, my aunt asked how your job situation was going?"

Lily suddenly brought it up.

Ruth, who spent her days playing cards, couldn’t sustain the family’s finances like this. After losing too much, she wanted to work, but once Arthur’s fixed living expenses arrived, the idea faded.

"That’s a private hospital!"

Ruth said irritably, "It’s called a high end private hospital, but it’s just two things, giving birth and abortions or treating STDs. Your Aunt Yana works there, it’s indeed relaxed but the pay isn’t high, just a bunch of bitches comparing this and that all day."

Ruth studied nursing at a medical school, meaning she was a nurse, but without family connections, she couldn’t find a good job. She married Arthur early and had children, but her qualifications were solid.

When she lost money, she studied hard, took exams, and now had a decent professional title, but whether she could still do the job was questionable.

Lily let out an "oh" and didn’t dare say more, afraid of provoking the tigress in her mother.

Seizing the moment, Luis served Ruth some beef and said, "Mom, I don’t want to work at Tiger Real Estate anymore. It’s just a Junior Accountant Job, can’t make much money, really not as good as the side hustles I do."

"Ding..."

As soon as he finished speaking, the familiar sound rang in his mind: "Side job mission: Apology with a Cock in Mouth released. Reward: Mysterious and generous."

Lily also spoke up, "Yeah Mom, Luis has a lot to handle. That job is very tiring, when would he have time?"

Ruth gave her a flirtatious glance and teased, "You, just can’t bear to be apart from your husband, huh?"

Lily blushed, her face full of a satisfied and happy woman’s glow after being well loved.

Ruth looked at the dazed Luis and said, "Son in law, Mom isn’t unreasonable. If you think there’s no future there, then just resign."

"Really?"

Lily said happily, "Mom, you said before that even if it wasn’t for brother in law’s sake, it was for sister’s, afraid sister would feel awkward."

"That was before, now is now."

Ruth, usually someone who could make a scene over nothing, was uncharacteristically red faced. Two gold bracelets totaling 6,000 dollars had already bombarded her stance into oblivion.

"Son-in-law, what are you dazed about, say something."

Seeing Luis spacing out, Ruth frowned and asked.

Luis snapped back to reality. Though he couldn’t figure out what the side quest was about, he decisively said, "Mom, I’ll handle the resignation myself. No matter what, I’ve worked almost ten days. At the very least, I should get my salary."

"Husband, you still want to keep working?"

Lily looked reluctant. "Didn’t you say those computers of yours are worth at least tens of thousand?"

"Even ants are meat!"

Luis said sternly, "Over 400 dollars is still money. Mom, Lily, every penny is hard-earned. How we spend it is our family’s business, but when it comes to earning, we must earn every cent back."

"Son-in-law is right!"

Ruth laughed approvingly. "Seeing you so sensible makes me so happy. Lily didn’t choose wrong."

Previously, she had called her daughter blind and stupid, saying Luis was a worthless poor loser dragging her daughter down...

Remembering his mother-in-law’s past harshness, Luis felt his anger rise slightly. Her materialistic nature was still her essence. Some things couldn’t be covered up by this harmonious atmosphere.

After dinner, Ruth took the initiative to wash the dishes, while Luis held his wife’s hand and went for a walk.

When they returned at night, Ruth had gone out to play cards. The young couple exchanged a smile and went upstairs together for a shower.

"Husband, Mom asked yesterday when we’re having a baby."

"She said if there are issues, we should get checked early. Seems like there’s some big conflict with eldest sister."

Pillow talk always included some gossip, though it was accompanied by passion. After a round of intimacy, Lily was fucked into unconsciousness, her face covered in a satisfied smile as she panted.

Luis hadn’t come yet. Just one added attribute point in stamina was terrifyingly effective. He could have finished, but it felt like he could control it.

Life began to feel normal and peaceful. At the very least, no one looked down on this live-in son-in-law anymore. It all came down to the power of money.

The puzzling thing was that during this time, sister-in-law Nancy kept calling Ruth. It wasn’t clear what they discussed, but it seemed like they argued, ending unhappily.

When Lily tried probing, she got scolded, so Luis didn’t want to invite trouble.

The weekend arrived, marking the end of the first summer military training session. Before leaving for work, Lily reminded him, "Husband, pick up Leah after school."

Though the family treated her with material stinginess and strict control, they knew how society was.

Leah was a school beauty the moment she entered school, inevitably attracting all kinds of unwanted attention. Even Daniel was eyeing her, which showed just how attractive she was.

At the school gate, the little sister-in-law came bouncing over, and Luis’s eyes lit up. "Leah, you can rest well at home now."

"Brother-in-law, I knew it’d be you. Mom would never come."

Leah giggled, tossing her small backpack to Luis. "Brother-in-law, is my phone fixed?"

"Fixed!"

The entrance of High School was completely jammed. Since it wasn’t a main road, many drivers had no manners at all. Motorcycles were one thing, but cars parked here made the road impassable.

"Leah, what’s wrong? You stopped replying to my messages!"

Suddenly, a fairly pretty girl asked, glaring suspiciously at Luis, who was carrying the backpack.

Luis was baffled. Leah’s face turned red as she snapped, "My phone was getting fixed, none of your business!"

"Who is this guy?"

"None of your business!"

Leah cursed back fiercely, grabbed Luis’s hand, and quickly ran off. At the intersection, they hailed a taxi and went home.

"Brother-in-law, where’s my phone?"

The first thing Leah did upon arriving home was ask anxiously.

"Fixed. Like you said, I left it in your room and locked it. The key’s still in the usual spot."

Leah rushed back to her room with her backpack and slammed the door shut. Teenage girls were just full of quirks.
