“So what's the plan?” Sam says as we enter the PsyCo garage.
“What makes you think that I have a plan?” I ask, a bit confused.
Sam sighs, “Okay, what is Evelin’s plan?
“Ah, uhm I don’t know.” I say.
“I was thinking, we could greet the kids, order some food from Lyssa and then watch a nature documentary or something similar with them until it’s time for them to go to bed.” Evelin’s voice comes through the car speakers.
Sam frowns. “You really think it's that easy to keep children entertained?”
“I mean, we can also play some games or have Daisy and Snowball play with them.” Evelin answers.
“Who is Snowball?” Sam asks as she scrunches up her nose.
“The reason why mom now has a set of rules for when she visits.” I say as I get out of the car.
“And you think Foxfire will actually listen to those rules?” Sam asks with a big smile.
“Oh, fuck no, she is worse than me with rules,” I say as I shake my head. “It’s just to prove that I made an attempt at stopping her.”
Sam gives me this one-eyed look. "You're sure she adopted you and not that she is secretly your actual mother, right?”
“Yeah, I am sure, but there is a reason we get along.” I say with a smile, as we head into the elevator.
When we reach the top floor and enter the penthouse foyer, we are immediately greeted by Anika, Bubbles and my corpo Princess, all dressed up to the nines. With Anika in a fancy suit and the girls wearing nice flowy dresses,
“I feel like I missed something.” I say as I openly stare at my gorgeous girls. "Was there an event?”
“Yeah, there is a charity thing PsyCo is participating in, to make sure the money goes into the correct pockets,” My Princess says as she comes forward to hug me. “What do you think? Do I look good?”
“Good is too small of a word; you all look amazing.” I say as I lean in closer.
“Good.” She says, carefully sliding my mask to the side to kiss me. "Take care of my little nibblings.”
I do a little salute. “Yes ma’am.”
I turn to Bubbles next. “Be careful, okay? Rich people are their own breed of crazy.”
“Don’t worry, Cierra will keep the crazies at bay, and if not,” she lifts her skirt revealing a little water gun that is strapped to her thigh, “I always have this to get them away from me.”
I gently lower her skirt as I give her a kiss as well. “Well, at least you are prepared for a surprise incursion.”
Bubbles nods and then turns to Sam with a big smile. “Sure, have fun being a nanny."
I turn to Anika. “Anything I should know? Any allergies or something like that?”
“No, there is nothing like that, but I recommend you not give them too much sugar before bed, otherwise, there will be hell to pay.” Then she grabs my shoulder. “Oh, and don’t get them a pet; we don’t have the time for an animal.”
I nod. “I think I can manage that much."
“Good, we will be back around one in the morning.” my Princess says. “Call me if something happens?”
I nod and wave them goodbye. Once they are in the elevator, we head further inside. As soon as we make it out of the foyer and get into our kitchen slash living room, Evelin appears, sitting on one of the kitchen island barstools.
Sam blinks up at her in surprise. “Did you not want to kiss your girlfriends goodbye as well?”
Evelin wobbles her head from side to side. “Yes, but no, this is just a projection. Even though I can interact with stuff, there is no feedback that comes back to me. You could smash my hand with a hammer and I won’t feel it.”
“Oh, really.” Sam says as she picks up an umbrella and throws it straight at Evelin’s face.
For the Protectors' sake, does she have bad reflexes? Not that it matters, the umbrella harmlessly bounces off her round head. Leaving Evelin just sitting there, frowning at Sam.
Giggles fill the air, and I spot two small heads looking at us from the couch, with some kind of cartoon playing on the TV.
“Hey kids.” I say, trying to distract them from whatever violence the other two might be planning. “What do you want for dinner? Lyssa is cooking, so it can be anything you want?”
“Pizza!” little Tyler shouts out.
“Can I have some nuggies and a burger?” Rose asks. “Ooh, and some ice cream for Daisy and Snowball.”
I look at the two animals with a bit of a squint. “I don’t think they like ice cream that much. But if you want some after dinner, then that's fine.”
Rose nods and excitedly chirps an “Okay!"
I turn to Sam next. "What do you want?”
“Lobster with caviar and maybe a steak.” She says with a big grin.
I walk into the kitchen, getting out some plates and setting them down on the dining table.
“Okay, you heard them, Lyssa. Can you get the food?”
Certainly, but Lyssa has not registered your request yet.
“Right, I forgot.” I turn to Evelin. “What should we eat?”
“How about ribs? Now that we can finally eat meat, we might as well try it?” Evelin points out.
I nod, “Yeah that works. Lyssa, if you please.”
An assortment of food gets placed on the table. I help the kids into their seats and plate their food. We all start eating, Sam has a content smile on her face as she eats, and the children are happily munching away at their food as well, smearing ketchup and pizza sauce everywhere.
I, well… meat has an interesting taste that I am not sure I am really used to yet, but the sauce is nice, so that's something.
As we continue to eat, Rose picks up one of her nuggies and hands it to Evelin. “You should eat too?”
Evelin smiles as she rubs Rose’s head. "Maniac is eating for me. Everything she eats, I will eat as well.”
Rose looks between the two of us in confusion. “We’re magic.” I whisper to her
Rose looks between the two of us with enormous eyes. “Where is your witch hat?”
“We haven't earned it yet.” Evelin says with a smile. “Maybe when we reach level 512 and unlock our third class.”
Rose nods. “Yeah, I guess they can't give one to a beginner.”
I nod and continue my dinner. Once dinner has finished, Evelin and I try our best to clean off the kids, but they're a bit too dirty, so one quick teleport later. I have some clean clothes for them and am running a bath.
“Can you two bathe by yourselves, or do you need me to help you?” I ask as I ushered them into the bathroom.
“We'll be alright.” Rose says.
“Okay, just shout if you need help,” I say as I head back into the living room and hop on the couch next to Sam.
Sam looks up from whatever she was looking at on her AUGs and turns to me “Still think you can handle having kids?”
“Yeah, they're not that much trouble.” I say as i lean in closer to Sam. “Clothes can be washed and stuff.”
“That's fair, but they require constant attention.” Sam points out.
“What is the point of having kids if you don’t want to give them attention? I mean, my parents were busy, but they at least tried to show up for me as often as possible.” I explain.
Sam turns to me. “That's true, but is your job not super busy as well?”
“I am as busy as I want to be since I technically don’t have a job.” I say with a smile. “And with the projector thing, as long as we have a stable connection, one of us is always able to stay home while the rest of us go out.”
“You think you can manage that?” Sam asks.
“Not at the moment,” Evelin says. "Trying to be in two different rooms is really hard, and our brain gets wobbly, but like everything, Protector Tech could probably solve it.”
Sam scoffs. “Must be nice having the ability to fix anything you don’t like.”
I throw an arm around Sam’s shoulder. “Then what do you want to change? You know you just have to ask, right? Maybe some głowy hair like Glowstick.”
Sam laughs. “Fuck off, I would never!” She lets out a sigh. “So much has changed. I thought I would be working the same job until I was dead, sending any extra money to my family, and now I have more money than I know what to do with.”
“Where is your family now?” I ask.
“They’re here. You know my brothers and sister were in a biker gang, right? Well, they are currently employed as maintenance personnel for all PsyCo vehicles.” Sam says, having a big smile on her face.
“Oh, that is great,” I say, having a similar big smile. “Even so, if you need anything, you just have to ask.”
“Thanks.”
We talk a bit more after that, only to be interrupted by wet footsteps in the hall. As the two kids come in, still wet from the bath.
“You know I gave you a towel, right?” I ask with a small grin.
Rose and Tyler look a bit surprised by that and start staring at the floor. Evelin pops up behind Tyler, picking him up and setting him down in her lap before she summons a blow dryer from somewhere.
“Don’t worry about it,” she says in a gentle tone. "Let's just get you dry so you won't get sick, okay?”
Tyler nods. I look at Rose, gesturing for her to come over so I can help her get dry as well. She slowly walks over and sits down on my lap. I summon another blow dryer from Lyssa and start going to work.
Once the kids are all dried off, I put on a nature documentary about the African Savanna to let the kids calm down. Both of them get really excited once the documentary starts focusing on a pack of hyenas. Daisy, getting excited by the attention, starts strutting around the room, tail held high in the air.
Eventually, they both nod off, and Evelin and I put them to bed in the guest bedrooms. Once I walk back into the kitchen, I find Sam mixing some drinks.
“To a job well done.” Sam says with a smile, as she holds up a glass.
I take the offered glass. “I am not sure if it's smart to start drinking when we are supposed to be babysitting.”
“Can’t you just nanite the alcohol away if something happens?” Sam points out.
“That is fair, but it sounds like the excuse of an alcoholic.” Evelin says.
I hold up the glass in the air. "To being alcoholics then.”
