Married First, Loved Later : A Flash Marriage with My Ex's 'Uncle'
Chapter 470: A Test on a Whim
CHAPTER 470: A TEST ON A WHIM
Everyone was surprised—no one expected Mr. Reid to speak with such cold indifference, let alone about this.
Selina rested her chin on one hand. "Mrs. Reid, are you curious what Mr. Reid just told me?"
The imposter stiffened. "He..."
"He talked about your marriage. I found it so interesting. Don’t you want to hear what he said?"
They were sitting in the lounge area. Guests came and went, and many overheard Selina’s question. Their curiosity was piqued—why did Mr. Reid and Mrs. Reid get married? What triggered it? Not many people knew. Now, everyone stopped to listen.
The imposter forced a smile. "It’s all in the past. Nothing worth repeating."
"That’s true. Since Mrs. Reid lived through it, hearing her own story again must be dull."
Selina nodded in agreement—then, just as the imposter was about to breathe a sigh of relief, Selina added, "But there are a few little details I’m dying to know. Maybe Mrs. Reid could clear them up for me?"
Logan glanced over with an amused smile.
The imposter tensed instantly but kept her voice soft and gentle. "What would you like to know, Miss Carter?"
Selina’s eyes drifted to the scar on the imposter’s neck. Her lips curled into a smile.
"Mr. Reid said he agreed to marry Mrs. Reid because of the scar on her neck. I can’t help but wonder—what’s the story behind it? Why would that scar matter to him?"
Logan raised an eyebrow.
...They hadn’t talked about that at all.
Selina made that up on the spot.
Logan had never mentioned the scar, but if Selina brought it up now—maybe she wanted answers too?
The imposter was clearly thrown off.
"This scar? Oh, wow, it’s got quite the story!" Luke suddenly appeared, squeezing his way in like he’d just remembered something. He looked at Selina, eyes wide with disbelief, barely masking his surprise.
Then he strolled up to the imposter, acting nonchalant and overly enthusiastic, hooking the crowd in with his words. "Ahem. This scar, believe it or not, is basically the red string of fate between my brother and my sister-in-law."
The crowd leaned in, intrigued.
A scar that led to a marriage? It sounded like the start of a touching tale.
But then Luke waved his hand dramatically. "Ah, but that’s a story only my sister-in-law can tell. Right, sis?"
He put extra weight on "sister-in-law," making the imposter flinch.
...What story could there possibly be? That scar came from when Selina got hurt trying to protect Ryan. It had nothing to do with Logan!
Panic rose inside the imposter. "Luke, there’s nothing much to say. It’s just—"
"But sis, everyone’s so curious. And it’s not like it’s a secret, right?"
Luke blinked innocently. "Come on, just tell them."
Now that Luke had brought it up, the ladies in the lounge were even more eager.
But the imposter’s face turned paler by the second. She couldn’t get a single word out.
"What’s wrong, Mrs. Reid?" Selina said with a slow, sweet smile. "You don’t want to share? Or... you don’t even know?"
The imposter’s eyes lit up. Of course! She could just say she didn’t know—say that Logan fell for her at first sight, but she never really understood why!
Just as she opened her mouth, Luke cut her off with perfect timing. "How could you not know? You’re the one who remembers it best! Come on, sis—give the people what they want."
The imposter nearly coughed up blood. "...!"
Luke’s words had completely cut off her escape route.
But then she had a flash of inspiration. If Logan had agreed to marry someone because of a scar, that must mean the scar was important to him. And Selina had once saved his life...
The imposter suddenly felt confident—like she had figured it out. "Because... well, everyone knows I saved Logan four years ago. That’s when he saw this scar and remembered it."
"Luke wasn’t wrong. Without this scar, maybe Logan and I wouldn’t have ended up together."
She gave a shy smile. "It’s just a sweet coincidence, really. Nothing more."
The crowd nodded, enlightened.
That explanation actually made sense—Mr. Reid saw the scar and thought of the woman who saved him. No wonder he was willing to marry her.
"Is that so?"
Selina blinked and turned to Luke, puzzled. "That’s weird... I thought it was for a different reason. What do you think, Master Luke?"
Luke: "...?"
He was stuck. He didn’t know anything about the scar. He’d just made something up to throw the imposter off—how was he supposed to keep this lie going?
Now the crowd was even more surprised. If that wasn’t the reason, then what was? And this was coming from Mrs. Reid herself—wasn’t it supposed to be true?
The imposter’s shoulders stiffened. She forced a smile. "Miss Carter, I think I know why I got married better than you do. Are you saying you know more about it than I do?"
Selina blinked again. "Of course not, Mrs. Reid. It’s just... Mr. Reid said that when he was rescued four years ago, he was blind."
The imposter froze.
Selina tilted her head, feigning innocence. "He was blind at the time and couldn’t see his savior’s face, so Angelica was able to pretend to be his savior."
"But if he was blind, how did he ’see’ the scar on your neck? Mrs. Reid, if it weren’t already confirmed that you were the one who saved him, I’d almost start to doubt it again."
The imposter clenched her jaw as reality smacked her like a brick.
Damn it—how could she forget that part?
"That—that’s because..."
"Maybe explain it to Mr. Reid yourself. I’m a bit tired, so I’ll go rest."
Selina rose to her feet, politely said her goodbyes to the others, then met Jacob’s gaze from across the room. She narrowed her eyes, smiled slightly, and walked toward him with effortless grace.
The imposter instinctively turned to look at Logan.
He was swirling the wine in his glass, a vague smile playing on his lips as if he’d already seen through everything. His tone was calm as he asked, "You forgot?"
A chill surged through the imposter’s body. An unfamiliar fear crept up her spine. She couldn’t stop the shiver that followed. "I-I just..."
"You seem scared of me," Logan said as he casually waved his hand, prompting the surrounding guests to quietly disperse.
He raised an eyebrow with subtle amusement. "What’s going on?"
The imposter swallowed hard. "I’m not afraid of you..."
"No? Then why are you shaking?" Logan smiled thinly. "Didn’t you say once, no matter what I did, you’d never be afraid of me? Or... did you forget that too?"
Luke was stunned.
Was this... baiting?!
