Mercenary’s War
Chapter 1794 - 1773: Where’s My Cannon?
CHAPTER 1794: CHAPTER 1773: WHERE’S MY CANNON?
Kanchelskis looked a bit nervous, which was understandable. Given the tumultuous times recently, it would be strange if he wasn’t.
Grand Ivan disappeared, Andre died, and Gao Yang, under the alias of Peter, emerged to take over the reins of power. He indeed took full control of the situation.
Most crucially, Gao Yang had just conducted a thorough purge. For Kanchelskis, the ongoing internal cleansing was far more dangerous than the conflict with Djo, causing him the greatest anxiety and fear.
As a confidant to both Grand Ivan and Andre, holding a very important position, speculations arose once Gao Yang, the new big boss, settled in. Would he want to replace this critical position with his own confidant, instead of Andre’s?
Gao Yang smiled and said, "Open your umbrella, why talk in the rain? How are things recently? Is everything normal here?"
Kanchelskis instinctively wiped the rain and invisible cold sweat from his face, picked up the umbrella he had placed aside, and nodded repeatedly, saying, "Normal, everything is normal. A ship just left the day before yesterday, the next shipment should be in half a month. Things are tense lately, impacting us a bit, but overall, everything is still normal. Neither the goods nor the shipping times have changed, and there haven’t been any issues on the way."
Gao Yang nodded and smiled, saying, "Not bad. During this tense period, managing to maintain normal operations and ensuring the timely transport of our goods, you’ve done an excellent job."
Kanchelskis laughed somewhat unnaturally, saying, "Thank you for your compliments, it’s my duty."
Gao Yang sighed lightly and said with a smile, "You should know that recently our internal situation has been a bit turbulent, affecting many people."
Kanchelskis looked even more nervous, whispering, "Yes, I know a bit."
Due to his work, Kanchelskis had contact with many people within Grand Ivan’s group, so it was impossible for him not to have any knowledge of recent events. However, this only made him more anxious. If Gao Yang merely wanted to move him, it would be manageable, but if Gao Yang intended to solidify his power by cleansing Grand Ivan’s old cronies, then his fate could be grim; losing his position was minor, losing his life was major.
Gao Yang knew what Kanchelskis was worried about. Everyone he met shared Kanchelskis’ concerns, and Gao Yang didn’t want Kanchelskis to remain worried. So, he immediately smiled and said, "Fortunately, the turbulent period has passed. Most of the people sent by Djo have been cleared out, although we had some traitors internally, they have been eradicated. We’ve also lost people in this conflict, Gleyanov was killed by the enemy. Oh, did you know him?"
Kanchelskis nodded, whispering, "I only met him once, but we often talked on the phone. We had a very good relationship and worked well together."
Gao Yang nodded, pointing at Rebrov and said, "So you were acquaintances. You might not know him, Rebrov, Gleyanov’s son."
Kanchelskis looked at Rebrov, nodding, "I’m very sorry about your father, he was a great man. My sincerest condolences to you. How’s your mother? I hope she’s not too grief-stricken."
Rebrov whispered, "Thank you, my father’s death is heartbreaking, but Mr. Peter has taken great care of my family. My mother and brother will receive a large sum of money to go to Russia. Mr. Peter initially thought about sending them to a place like Western Europe or America, but I feel Moscow suits them better."
Kanchelskis nodded, whispering, "Moscow is good, I’m from Moscow too. You’re right, there’s no need to go elsewhere, Moscow is quite nice. Peter will take good care of your mother and the others, so I’m relieved."
Sometimes, a few words and hints are enough; there’s no need to be too explicit. Gao Yang achieved the intended effect by having Rebrov accompany him to meet people, and he intended to reassure Kanchelskis.
Gao Yang patted Kanchelskis on the arm, smiling, "I know you’ve been working hard lately, but I’m sorry, you need to keep working hard. We’re short-handed now, but you’ve been doing very well, and I can’t let you work without any appreciation. Your account will receive one million US dollars, which you deserve, buddy. Keep up the good work, everything here is in your hands."
Kanchelskis finally breathed a complete sigh of relief. The reward of one million US dollars was significant, but what mattered most was that he wouldn’t be purged or have to relinquish his position.
Despite being much older than Gao Yang, when Gao Yang patted him on the shoulder approvingly, Kanchelskis responded like a breath of fresh air, repeatedly saying, "It’s not hard, not hard at all, thank you, Peter. I’ll definitely do my best with the work, rest assured."
Gao Yang checked his watch and smiled, "I have some time, can I go and see our warehouses? Is it convenient?"
Kanchelskis immediately said, "Convenient, of course, it’s convenient. Our warehouses are right at the port, we have four large warehouses here. It’s a bit far to walk, but we can drive in, it’ll be quick."
Gao Yang laughed, "Let’s take your car, this one’s a bit small."
Riding in a subordinate’s car is also a sign of trust. Kanchelskis was very happy to invite Gao Yang into his car, and then two cars drove in succession into the port area, reaching the warehouse where military supplies were usually stored.
"Out of four warehouses, three are empty because we just shipped out a batch of goods. The remaining items are either temporarily stored for shipment or have been stored for a long time awaiting the right opportunity to be sent. The upcoming batch of goods is not much; it’s bound for Somalia, disguised as wheat. We used wheat as a cover because Somalia is in need of food, so we kill two birds with one stone, haha. Please come this way."
After retrieving the keys from the warehouse guards, Kanchelskis personally opened the warehouse door, repeatedly saying, "Please take a look, the outside is temporarily stored goods ready for shipment, and the goods not yet scheduled for shipment are in the back."
The warehouse was piled high with ammunition boxes. Gao Yang walked through the neatly stacked boxes to the back half of the warehouse, and as he moved forward, Kanchelskis’ face grew increasingly tense.
Weaving through the various stacked boxes, Gao Yang reached the back of the warehouse, stopping in an area that was supposed to hold items but now was just an empty space. He extended his hand, pointing at the empty space, "Here, wasn’t there supposed to be something?"
Kanchelskis’ face turned completely bloodless, he quivered, "Yes, there was supposed to be a lot of stuff here."
"Like cannons?"
"Yes... yes, cannons, and eight thousand shells, shells..."
Gao Yang exhaled deeply, then focused intensely on Kanchelskis, saying in a low tone, "So, where are my cannons? Where did my cannons go?"
