Millennium Witch
Book 1: Chapter 12: The Witch and the Evil God
Morning light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a slanted glow on the desk. Yvette’s delicate, pale fingers gently glided through the yellowed pages of a book titled “Linguistics: From Beginner to Advanced.”
After a while, she closed her eyes in frustration, leaning back against the chair’s backrest, letting out a soft, refined moan of despair.
In the past two days, she had exhausted her efforts through gestures, comparing texts, using phonetic aids, and researching references, yet she still could not grasp the origin of the language spoken by the foreign blonde girl.
It not only didn’t belong to either Jadeite or Silvermirror but also seemed impossible to match with any of the hundreds of derived dialects across the continents.
This sense of unproductive effort left her feeling utterly fatigued.
Then, she slightly turned her face and looked out at the estate through the floor-to-ceiling window, where the girl was sitting on a wicker swing, swaying gently. Watching her exquisite classical dress adorned with intricate embroidered patterns, Yvette gradually developed a bold idea.
Could this little golden-haired girl also be a fellow traveler?
Perhaps, unlike her own soul-crossing experience, she had traversed in a physical body?
With this thought, Yvette, unwilling to continue with her “Study of the Language of the Original Civilization” project, began to think of another field.
That would be Mind Magic!
Yes, in the original civilization, telepathy and hypnosis were genuine and powerful restricted-level spells.
However, their usage came with many restrictions—qualifications, special conditions, and relevant equipment were all mandatory, which is why they were mainly used to treat mental illnesses or interrogate criminals.
Now, what Yvette needed to do was to leverage her years of experience in rune design to swiftly develop a communication-based mind magic to meet her temporary communication needs.
Half a month later, after exploring ruins of psychiatric hospitals, police stations, and other places, using the information gathered combined with years of accumulated rune design experience, Yvette’s preliminary attempts at mind magic finally bore fruit.
This was a high-spec large spell formation with a total of 50,000 runes. Even now, with her mental powers greatly increased and her magical capacity nearing 600 points, Yvette would still be unable to cast it independently.
Fortunately, her years of scavenging were not in vain. During the past two years, she had obtained a relatively intact magitek terminal named “Furnace Ring Type X3,” produced by “Ember Chemical.”
With this, after a period of learning, researching, and hands-on repairs, the situation saw a breakthrough.
“The rune capacity is 500,000, but according to the system’s self-check, 80% of the ‘bad paths’ have developed, meaning the actual capacity is only a little over 100,000… Considering it’s acceptable, it’s still usable…”
“Wait, how severe is the energy decay of the elemental capacitor? Just 1% left of a 20-point magical capacity? It’s meant to shut down right after startup? Phew, luckily I have plenty of magic for 24-hour stable power supply…”
As she stroked the ring on her middle finger, after a period of research, Yvette input all 50,000 runes and named the spell “Voice of the Heart.”
At the same time, she entered another new spell, “Vitality Magic,” which she had developed previously but hadn’t optimized yet, primarily aimed at enhancing physical recovery to heal injuries or diseases, with around 6,000 runes.
“Now, the remaining space has only 44,000 left… How extravagant! Back at Abyss Base, I spent years optimizing spells merely to refine 7 or 8 runes to perfection. Where did that version of me go?”
She sighed silently and went downstairs, where she saw the little golden-haired girl squatting by the flowerbed, intently observing two squirrels mating.
Upon seeing Yvette come down, the girl looked up and gave a sweet smile, the sunlight filtering through the lush leaves casting dappled shadows on her face, creating a beautiful scene.
Yvette nodded quietly in response.
She had been living with this little girl for more than half a month now. Although they spoke different languages, they had developed a good rapport through some basic body language.
The little girl was also the most obedient child Yvette had ever seen among those under ten; she had never shown even a shred of mischief, rebellion, or willfulness. On the contrary, she was well-educated, sensible, and caring, further enhancing Yvette’s fondness for her and deepening her curiosity about her background.
Yvette speculated that this little golden-haired girl must have had an extremely good family upbringing because she remained so calm and mature after arriving in such a terrifying and unfamiliar world.
Walking over, Yvette waved her hand, and the little girl obediently walked up to her, patiently waiting for her instructions.
Yvette raised her hand, and she instantly understood, raising her palm so that Yvette could place her hand in it.
“…”
Yvette suddenly felt a bit strange; wasn’t this just like a “shake hands” command in dog training?
But she swore she hadn’t done anything, attributing it solely to the girl’s exceptional sensitivity in understanding her intent immediately.
Not overthinking it, she activated “Voice of the Heart,” using skin contact as a medium to create a subtle connection between her spirit and the girl’s spirit.
Five seconds later, the rune group finished loading, and the curtain of the spiritual world was suddenly lifted—
“Ugh, when will this fawning and flattering life come to an end…”
As this anxious thought echoed in her mind, Yvette’s gaze momentarily froze.
Looking into the girl’s obedient and adorable face, she saw the girl’s big, watery eyes openly meeting hers, revealing an endearingly timid vulnerability.
She fell silent, continuing to listen.
“What is this evil god doing, staring at me? It’s so scary… Can’t she just leave me alone?”
Evil god? Yvette was slightly taken aback; she had clearly rescued the girl, so why did this little girl perceive her as an evil god?
Was there a logical connection here?
“Damn it, just to survive, I have to fawn over the evil god like a dog; how pathetic…”
“This isn’t really my problem, is it?” Yvette couldn’t help but defend herself.
Then she saw the girl’s expression suddenly turn to one of terror.
“Whose voice… whose voice?! Is it her? Can she understand my thoughts?”
“This is a spell for achieving mind-to-mind communication, able to bypass language barriers.” Yvette finally spoke.
However, what she didn’t tell the little girl was that she had hidden a backdoor in the spell; she could choose to selectively mute her thoughts to prevent them from being heard while being aware of everything the girl thought in her mind.
Finally, she added, “And I am not an evil god.”
“Right… I’m sorry, Evil God, I didn’t mean it, I just… I just…”
The little girl’s expression changed rapidly, and she suddenly knelt down, her face as pale as paper, her body trembling like a sieve.
From her surging emotions, Yvette could genuinely feel her fear. The girl seemed truly convinced that Yvette was an evil god rather than an angel, deity, or any other benevolent figure.
“Why do you insist on believing that I am an evil god?” Yvette helped her up, maintaining physical contact to ensure the effectiveness of the spell.
“Because… because this is ‘The End of Days,’ the place where the legendary evil god ‘The Witch of the End’ is sealed.”
The girl’s reply came with obvious inner resistance, though she dared not withhold: “I… I noticed that there’s only you living here, and you’re a beautiful woman, so I thought the legendary Witch of the End must be you…”
Before Yvette could respond, the little girl’s thoughts swiftly sank into despair, her mind turning to ashes as she replied, “Anyway, I will never betray the human race, so you can give up on that… You can just kill me!”
“…”
For a moment, the estate fell into silence.
Looking at the little girl before her, whose eyes were tightly shut as if awaiting death, yet unable to resist sneaking glances at her, Yvette fell silent for a moment before changing the subject. “How did you come to this world?”
She was now utterly convinced that this girl was a traveler from another world, but it appeared that that world was somewhat less advanced, as it lacked even the concept of a “planet.”
“Chasm of Remains.” The little girl provided a vague term.
“What is that?”
“I read in a book that there is a celestial phenomenon called ‘Aurora’ that occurs once in a century… When it appears, a ‘Chasm of Remains’ can be found nearby. It is a spiral entrance connected to the End of Days that lasts only for a short time, just a few minutes… These entrances appear and disappear sporadically, and sometimes terrifying tainted demons emerge from them… I crossed through the Chasm of Remains to get here…”
Aurora… Yvette mulled over the word, immediately recalling the splendid scene she had witnessed three months ago in the night sky.
At that time, she hadn’t thought much of it, merely appreciating the natural beauty, and then she had heard the little girl’s scream. Little did she know that the aurora that night was the key to the connection between the two worlds.
She asked again, “What is a tainted demon?”
“Those monsters you have eliminated outside… The book says they are called ‘Corrupt Demons,’ and they occasionally escape from the Chasm of Remains to attack humans and livestock. They bear evil taint, and once they scratch someone, that person will be assimilated…”
Though it had already been over half a month, it was clear that the grotesque appearances of the aberrations had left a profound impression on the little girl. Whenever the topic arose, Yvette sensed the waves of fear surging in her consciousness.
It indeed matched how aberrants infect other animals… Though she didn’t know how they had previously infected mechanical creations, now, blood transmission was their main method of creating other aberrants…
Yvette nodded silently, closing off her thoughts and continued asking, “When did this phenomenon start?”
She suspected that the world on the other side might be connected to the original civilization.
“I don’t know; the book didn’t say, but it seems to have been around for thousands of years.” The little girl shook her head in confusion.
