Modern World Warlock
Chapter 380: Wolfram’s Reveal
The following day, after the Jade Dragons and their allies watched the first version of Tanya's documentary, the leaders and handlers of the mafia families got together to talk about their next steps.
It had been a little over two weeks since the end of the necropolis' battle, and there were still plenty of businesses and assets that the families had to split among them.
While some of those businesses were taken over to be managed by the families, others were completely erased from Novaria.
The hard drug labs that the Onyx Cartel had in the jungle with enslaved workers were all razed to the ground by the mafia's strike teams. However, this made the three families a target for international criminal organizations that greatly profited from those drugs.
Now that all the leaders and handlers were gathered at the Jade Palace, they decided to have a big meeting so that everyone was on the same page.
The vampire clan also attended the movie screening and the meeting, and they were given a few of the cartel's businesses for them to manage so that they wouldn't keep relying on assassination jobs for money.
When the battle ended, the Jade Dragons took care of Asphodel's treatment, and while her injuries were some of the worst out of everyone who participated, she was also the first one to completely heal.
The meeting took place in a large multi-use room at the Jade Palace, where all of the leading members of their own divisions gathered and sat down in front of a small stage.
After Camille, Melinda, and Alexander were done summarizing the distribution of assets among them, Imera, the Sacred Beast, took the stage at the handlers' request.
Next to Imera, a petite female android followed her closely and confidently stood atop the stage.
There was a small group of people who knew the identity of the supposed android, but it was time to reveal the truth to the others.
She wasn't actually an android—she was a cyborg with the wizard Wolfram's soul.
The mafia members started muttering to each other, wondering why they allowed one of their enemies to change bodies.
"Hey, Dante. Why did they put Wolfram's soul in that model? I thought Wolfram was a guy…" Zac asked with genuine curiosity, sitting next to Dante.
The warlock shrugged and explained that he had never met the real Wolfram. Still, he believed that his new appearance was Imera's own way of messing with him without having to kill him.
Imera had taken the stage with the new cyborg since Wolfram had information about the mysterious organization that appeared at the very end of their battle. In fact, she was the only person in the room who knew about them.
Wolfram started her speech by explaining the reason for teaming up with Netherius. As a researcher who was looking into the convergence to another world, Wolfram had been targeted by the church and other groups.
Knowing that she didn't have much time left with all those targets on her back, she took Netherius' deal of getting resurrected if, and only if, the necromancer managed to get to Earth.
Of course, Wolfram didn't agree with all of Netherius' plans, and even though she kept her autonomy and memories as an undead, she couldn't rebel against the necromancer who returned her to life.
There were many reasons for Netherius' wish to create a massive necropolis, and one of those reasons was to catch the attention of this mysterious organization.
"They call themselves 'N.E.K.X.I.S," Wolfram said, revealing that it was meant to be an acronym of the leaders' names.
Nekxis was a secret, elite organization that had been created sometime around the 1300s, and all of their leaders were mages who had crossed through the convergence from Terra.
The power they held was beyond what they could imagine, as Nekxis was able to persuade government decisions of almost every country in the world.
While their objective wasn't clear, Wolfram suspected that their main goal was dominating the world from the shadows.
Moreover, Nekxis had created their own versions of magical tools using a combination of technology and magic, and as soon as Wolfram mentioned that, Paige's eyes lit up with interest.
Paige, the main scientist for the Jade Dragons, had been researching magic ever since Dante's arrival. However, the fact that she couldn't see or use magic herself made it almost impossible for her to create devices or weapons that were powered by magic.
Knowing that a secret organization had managed to craft these devices before her, she felt a mix of jealousy and excitement.
She was jealous that she couldn't be part of the creation process, but she was excited to know that it was possible.
'Huh… So that's why my spell didn't reach those soldiers. They must have been using one of those devices to protect themselves from magic,' Dante pondered while listening intently.
Wolfram didn't know the reason why Nekxis' soldiers attacked them after defeating Netherius, but it was clear that they were targeting Dante from the very beginning.
The spectators turned around to look at the warlock as if expecting him to know the reason for their interest in him. Nevertheless, Dante hadn't even heard of the group until that day, so he had absolutely no clue what they could want from him.
"It is possible they want to recruit Dante. But it is also possible that they just want to eliminate him to remove any possible threats from the world…" Wolfram continued.
Dante raised an eyebrow with confusion. 'I would have never known they existed if they hadn't attacked me! How am I a threat to them!?' he thought.
After Wolfram finished her presentation, everyone in the room stayed silent for a minute, digesting all of the information that had been dumped on them.
Even after defeating Netherius and destroying the Onyx Cartel, the mafia families couldn't relax and enjoy their time with no enemies, as their new opponent had already shown itself to them.
