Mountain Sitting Immortal
Chapter 595: Always Pragmatic.
Her master and the current patriarch of the sect was talented enough to survive advancing to the fifth mortal coil with a weak body, but she isn't that talented.
She only managed to create a ninth transformation golden coil, so she will be missing one more transformation to the peak of the fourth mortal coil.
Not only that, her body is weak and might give out early when she is in the middle of advancing. Plus her sect lacks the resources to ensure her success.
These conditions are the same as the ones that the two seniors before her had. Those seniors failed to advance, so she knew just how bad her chances of success are.
This is why she reached out to the Red and Blue Fire sect and offered to betray her sect in exchange for their help to advance to the fifth mortal.
The Red and Blue Fire sect didn't reach out to her. In fact, the Red and Blue Fire sect doesn't consider the Purple Flower sect a threat at all. After all, they have the advantage of number and quality.
It was Purple Vine who actively approached them to sell out her sect. This is something that she could do because her cultivation technique has made her extremely logical and pragmatic.
She is pragmatic, so she doesn't think that the Purple Flower sect can win this war at all. She only cared about growing stronger, so she doesn't even care if the Purple Flower sect manages to somehow win the war. What she cared about was advancing to the fifth mortal coil.
Since the Purple Flower sect can't help her with that, then she can't care if they survive or not. After all, what does the fate of the Purple Flower sect matter if she dies trying to advance to the fifth mortal coil?
So choose to prioritize surviving the process and advancing to the fifth mortal coil. Even if the Purple Flower sect is destroyed in order to achieve this, then so be it. She will just leave this poor region and go upstream to greener pastures.
Lady Evergreen was sure that this was what Purple Vine was thinking. But she wasn't sure what the patriarch of the Purple Flower sect would think if she found out that the best golden core elder in her sect had betrayed her sect.
But then, Lady Evergreen shrugged and said, "I won't be surprised if she already knows. At the very least, she has to suspect that someone is betraying the sect if she is as intelligent as everyone says she is. Once she starts to suspect, this Purple Vine will be the most likely suspect."
The one person that she believed to be the least likely to betray the Purple Flower sect and would have been very surprised to discover to be the traitor would be Green Viper.
Despite his emotionally unstable state of mind, it is clear that Green Viper is someone who cares about people and has strong attachments to them. His quest for revenge for the death of his son is proof of this.
So Lady Evergreen believes that Green Viper is the last person who would decide to betray his sect, where he lived most of his life. Compared to the cold and calculating Purple Flower, Green Viper is more reliable.
As for the other golden core elders in the sect, Lady Evergreen believes that they are in between Green Viper and Purple Vine in the chances of being traitors. She also believes that the patriarch of the Purple Flower sect should know this.
This made her say, "I wish I could see her face when she finds out who the traitor is. That will teach them and other sects to make everyone swear an oath not to betray their sect as soon as they enter the sect."
She has many enemies in the Blood Skull sect and has had enough people hate her enough to want to kill her. But she can feel safe with them and count on them not to betray the sect because they all swore an oath to protect the interests of the sect.
She and the many other disciples of the sect had sworn this oath on the border of the outer sect on their first day. It was even right as they entered the sect.
It is clear that the Blood Skull sect took this oath seriously. This is something that their founders had set up right after the sect was established.
The founders of the sect established the oath because they knew that the sect wouldn't be stable without an oath if they were going to be raising their disciples as predators and killers. Without the oath, they were sure that everyone would kill each other.
But the other sects are not in agreement with the Blood Skull sect about the importance of oaths for keeping the sect together. In fact, the Blood Skull sect is alone in the Five Veins region in requiring new disciples to swear an oath.
The other four sects don't require their new disciples to swear oaths. This isn't exactly a bad thing because there are pros and cons to both stances.
The pro of not requiring an oath is that the sect doesn't need to spend a lot of money and manpower on training, performance tests, ranking rewards, and raising beasts within the sect for hunting in order to train their disciples and keep them sharp.
The disciples of sects without oaths have to be careful of each other, and the competition is severe enough to be deadly, so their disciples are oftentimes more capable of fighting for their lives.
Of course, the most obvious demerit of not swearing oaths is the risk of betrayal. As someone who came from a sect where betrayal is nearly impossible, Lady Evergreen could safely enjoy this situation without worrying about her own sect.
She rubbed her hands together and said, "This is more fun than I expected. Let the games begin."
