CHAPTER 314: CHAPTER 314: FOLLOW ME

Oscar looked at Chantelle with an apologetic glance. "Sorry. Camille’s still a spoiled little girl."

"She needs to learn to take responsibility for what she says and does," Chantelle replied wearily, then walked out of the hospital.

But as soon as she got into the car, Chantelle straightened her back.

She wasn’t a little girl anymore. She wouldn’t let emotions shake her so easily.

"Ms. Chantelle, I looked into the report Roman gave us. It’s real. Joseph is putting a lot of resources behind it," Calvin said. He noticed the sharp look in her eyes and the color returning to her face. Whatever had been bothering her earlier was clearly gone now.

"If that’s true, then let’s challenge him this time." A sly smile appeared at the corner of Chantelle’s lips.

"Are you thinking of starting a business here?" Calvin asked, clearly concerned.

"You don’t think it’ll work?" Chantelle asked. She didn’t expect Calvin to question her plan.

Before she came back, he had kept telling her to let go of the past and stay in Carcosa.

But once she returned, he never stopped her. He had been doing everything he could to help her.

"It’s not that," Calvin said. "It’s just... more than half of Easthan’s businesses belong to Mr. Wilson. Now that you have access to all his resources, are you really going to build something from scratch?"

"Calvin, don’t tell me you really think he’ll leave his property to me when he’s already planning to marry someone else!"

Even if everything Daniel gave her was under her name, he could take it back whenever he wanted.

Those things were just trouble. Nothing more.

She had already made up her mind to leave him. She didn’t want anything that belonged to him.

"I think Mr. Wilson and Ms. Nelsen..." Some of the people working with Daniel and Chantelle could see clearly that Daniel’s feelings were only for Chantelle. It was hard to believe he’d marry anyone else.

"I know what to do," Chantelle swiftly interrupted him. She didn’t want to hear Daniel’s name.

Calvin thought: If I can figure out what Daniel’s thinking, then Ms. Chantelle definitely can. She must have her own plans. Maybe I said too much.

"What have you gathered about Connor Yates?" Chantelle asked, shifting the topic back to work.

Calvin straightened up and answered, "Connor worked under Wesley for over twenty years. He used to be Wesley’s most trusted man. Wesley trusted his talent too, and that made Connor arrogant. Before things went south, he actually believed he owned the Wilson Group of Companies."

"Wesley wouldn’t have kicked him out just for that," Chantelle said. She knew Wesley valued loyalty. He wouldn’t have let Connor go unless Connor had done something really unforgivable.

"Connor tried to gather people and resources to build power for himself inside the Wilson Group of Companies. Wesley let it slide, as long as he didn’t cross the line. But once Mr. Daniel joined the company, Connor did everything he could to push him out."

Chantelle chuckled. That’s just how people are. Give them a little, and they’ll want everything. Even if Connor took everything from Wesley, he still wouldn’t be satisfied.

"Wesley didn’t stop him at first. He wanted Mr. Daniel to learn things the hard way. But after several assassination attempts were made against Mr. Daniel’s life, Wesley finally intervened and fired Connor."

"I bet Wesley gave him a generous severance," Chantelle said.

She remembered hearing stories from when Daniel first joined the company; how he was nearly hit by a truck, almost fell from a building under construction, and even nearly drowned.

There were probably many more things she didn’t know.

"Wesley gave him a lot of money and even a mansion."

"He tried to kill Wesley’s only grandson. I’m shocked Wesley still showed him kindness. What’s worse is that Connor didn’t think it was enough!"

"From what I found out, Connor’s a gambling addict. He blew up all his money pretty fast. Later, he’s been struggling, and that made him hate Wesley and Mr. Daniel even more."

"Then how did he end up working at Morgan Corp?" Chantelle asked, the question popping into her mind.

"Joseph recommended him," Calvin replied while his eyes were on the road.

"Do you think he had something to do with Wesley’s death?" Chantelle’s heart started to race.

A masquerade ball was taking place in a castle on Kamai Island, Carcosa.

Most of the guests were young people. At the front of the hall, on a raised stage, sat an old man with silver hair. His face was covered by an eagle mask.

He watched the young people dancing below, eyes fixed on them, as if he wished he could join them.

"That man in the wheelchair... Is that Trenton?"

Daniel stood at the end of the dance floor, dressed in a black suit and wearing a black mask. He leaned closer and whispered something to Natalia, who was in his arms.

He wouldn’t have made it inside the castle if he hadn’t pretended to be one of Natalia’s research assistants.

"I think that’s him. I heard people around him calling him ’Lord.’"

Natalia was nervous at this time. She wouldn’t have brought Daniel there, but he had funded ten years of her research.

It wasn’t that she was scared. She just didn’t want to drag her family into it.

"Not ’Lord Trenton’?" Daniel paused for a moment, then matched the rhythm again.

Natalia shook her head. "I clearly heard them say ’Lord.’ Maybe that’s just what the people close to him call him."

Daniel narrowed his eyes but he didn’t say a word.

Natalia gently pulled him away from the dance floor. "What are you planning to do? Can you tell me, so I can prepare myself?"

"In two minutes, pretend you’re not feeling well and head to the lounge to rest. Once it’s safe, you can leave."

Daniel let go of her and slipped into the crowd.

Natalia stood there, staring at his back for a couple of seconds before turning and walking away in the opposite direction.

After leaving the dance floor, Daniel changed into a waiter’s uniform. Then, he took a narrow hallway that led deeper into the castle.

When Daniel moved deeper into the castle, he noticed more guards around every corner.

But after dodging them all and reaching the underground lab’s entrance, there wasn’t a single guard in sight.

The lab door had a retinal scanner. He was ready for that. He had special contact lenses in his eyes. The scanner beeped, and the door slid open.

Inside, Daniel quickly put on a full-body protective suit. It covered him completely, making him even harder to recognize.

"Hey, you! Follow me!" a voice called out from behind him.

Daniel turned around and saw a blue-eyed Carcosan.

He followed the man down to the fifth floor of the lab without running into any trouble.
