CHAPTER 352: 348, THAT GIRL’S FAMILY REALLY HAS SOME POWER (INVESTIGATION)
Jon did not expect the old lady to be so vigilant. He quickly smiled and said, "Ma’am, no offense, but I’m an international student studying here. I met his daughter at school, and then Uncle Zane disapproved because I’m a foreigner, so..." At this point, Jon hesitated, but when it came to making up stories, he didn’t miss a beat.
"I wanted to learn about Uncle Zane’s youth to win his favor, so he would agree to give his daughter to me."
Anyway, this old lady in front of him didn’t know how old Zane’s daughter was this year, so Jon just bluffed his way through.
"I see..." The old lady tapped her smoking pipe on the red brick ground and placed the pipe beside her as she began to tell Jon the story.
"The old Zane Family used to live in that house over there..." The old lady pointed in a direction, and Jon followed her gesture. Although he was not interested in which house Julian Zane originally lived in, he couldn’t afford to let his front slip.
"Back then, the family was incredibly poor. His mother was a widow and it was hard raising him... But this young Julian was quite promising. Later he got into university and brought home a bright and beautiful girl. I heard that her family was very powerful, some big official in the Military District..."
As she spoke, the old lady was animated, as if she had seen it with her own eyes.
"Ma’am, how did you know that the girl’s family was highly ranked?"
"You kid!" Seeing Jon somewhat skeptical, the old lady frowned and scolded him before saying, "Of course, it was Julian’s mother who told me... She also said... that the girl’s family disapproved, thinking that his family was too poor and not good enough for them..."
Perhaps it was because she was cooped up in this remote place and rarely saw outsiders, or maybe because she was the only person in the house, once she found someone to talk to, she could not stop chatting.
The old lady told Jon a lot, narrating how the family opposed but the girl moved into Julian Zane’s house and refused to go back. Then later, multiple times the old lady saw the girl’s family send cars to take her away, cars used by soldiers in TV shows, so grand. But after a few days, the girl would secretly run back...
Latterly, Julian Zane’s family moved to the city. According to Julian Zane’s mother, Julian had started a company there...
After saying goodbye to the old lady, Jon hit the road back to the city area. Sitting in the back seat, he was deep in thought all the way.
Her family disapproved... They took her back again and again, yet she kept secretly running back... He started a company in the city... Arms trafficking... A high-ranking officer in the Military District...
All these seemingly unrelated pieces of information, once put together, seemed to make many things clear.
Julian Zane was handsome, and even at nearly sixty, he still had an elegant demeanor. One could imagine he was outstanding in his youth, or else Nicole Zane would not have fallen for him so hopelessly.
She preferred to defy her family and secretly moved into his house, even... To help him, she used her father’s position in the Military District to secretly engage in arms trafficking...
Jon’s blue eyes narrowed as he amazed himself with this bold speculation.
It seemed like this must have been what happened.
Otherwise, according to the old lady, Julian Zane’s family was so poor they had to scrape together money just to send him to university, so where would they find the funds to start a company?
Starting a company requires a substantial amount of money, and with Nicole Zane’s family disapproving, they certainly would not help financially.
Therefore, the capital must have come from Nicole Zane, who used her unique status to engage in illegal transactions...
Suddenly, Jon discovered another breakthrough. If he could find out who Nicole Zane sold the arms to back then, wouldn’t that unveil the truth of that time?
Jon was delighted, but when he was in over his head, it was too late to remember Abigail Zimmerman’s warning and think about pulling out.
