Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!
Chapter 376: Restart the Investigation
CHAPTER 376: CHAPTER 376: RESTART THE INVESTIGATION
Audrey Sutton had just disposed of the USB drive and returned to the house. She hadn’t even had a chance to change her clothes when she heard the sound of a car outside.
She felt as if she had turned into a criminal who had done something bad, becoming extremely nervous at any little sound or movement.
"Ding dong—" The doorbell rang, blending with the sound of the rain outside. Audrey looked into the full-length mirror by the door, tidied up her hair, and took a deep breath.
"Sis-in-law? It’s me."
Audrey walked over to open the door. Faye Xavier greeted her with a cheerful smile: "The bubble tea has arrived, enjoy it, sis-in-law!"
Audrey smiled and reached out to take it: "You’ve worked hard, Brother Xavier."
"No hard work at all, if it’s cold, you can get a refund, don’t forget to give me a five-star review~" Faye quickly shifted to gossip, asking: "Sis-in-law, did you and Master Shane have a fight?"
"Huh? No, why do you ask?"
Faye chuckled: "Master Shane suddenly asked me to bring you bubble tea. I thought maybe you were mad at him and he was trying to cheer you up. Besides, he’s been looking gloomy these past couple of days; I figured you two might have had a disagreement."
"Gloomy? He was fine this morning, nothing happened."
"Hehe, maybe Master Shane only shows his gentle side to you and gives us all his poker face."
Audrey chuckled awkwardly, thinking that Shane Warner, indeed, liked to pretend to be aloof outside. When she first married him, her impression of him was just a cool-faced iceberg.
"Well, sis-in-law, I better get going. Remember to say good things about me to Master Shane."
Audrey smiled and nodded: "Drive safely; it’s raining hard."
She watched Faye’s car leave and then closed the door.
Looking down at the cup of bubble tea in her hand, it was still warm and it was from her favorite shop.
He had someone deliver it from a great distance, originally a sweet and blissful gesture. But thinking about the contents of the USB drive, Audrey’s heart was filled more with melancholy.
She went upstairs, grabbed some clothes to change into, and headed to the bathroom, soaking in the tub until her cold hands and feet slowly warmed up.
She took a sip from the cup, then placed it on the shelf beside the bathtub, picked up her phone, and scrolled through her contacts list.
She wanted to investigate the matter but didn’t know where to start.
As for Vincent Warner, she dared not seek him out. Firstly, she feared Shane Warner would be angry, and secondly, she couldn’t let Vincent know about the USB. If he found out, it might be equivalent to Shane knowing.
And her big brother, she didn’t know how to approach him either. Maybe it would be better to find her second brother; he’s professional when it comes to finding clues; he’s probably skilled at it.
Audrey called Franklin Sutton, confirming he was at the police station.
She got out of the tub, changed clothes, and grabbed an umbrella before heading out.
She didn’t dare ask Shane Warner’s assigned driver to pick her up, instead she used her phone to call for a ride, heading straight to the police station.
Things seemed relatively peaceful lately, with the people at the station appearing quite idle. When Audrey looked for Franklin Sutton, he was chatting with several colleagues at a corner of the table.
"Second Brother." Audrey called out to him from the doorway.
Franklin glanced back at her, got off the table, and walked straight to her: "Why are you coming here in this downpour? Did your husband abuse you?"
As he spoke, Franklin grabbed Audrey’s arm, turning her around to check for injuries.
Audrey hurriedly explained: "No, I need to talk to you. Let’s discuss it in your office."
Franklin stepped forward and led the way to his office, asking as they walked: "What’s going on?"
Audrey didn’t reply until they entered the office. She cautiously locked the door, then looked at Franklin and said: "Second Brother, I need your help with something."
Franklin sat on the sofa by the coffee table and pointed to the single seat next to him, signaling for Audrey to sit too: "Help with what? Did your husband cheat on you?"
"Oh, no! Listen to me first!"
Audrey sat on the opposite side and recounted everything that had happened and what she knew to Franklin.
Franklin frowned: "What’s all this nonsense? Big Brother would murder someone? What a joke. He wouldn’t even kill a fish."
Audrey: "I don’t believe Big Brother would do such things either, but the evidence currently presented is very unfavorable to him. I don’t dare share this with Shane Warner either, so I’ve come to you."
"How can I help you? This happened years ago, why is it suddenly being brought up again?"
"That’s not important. What’s important are the many doubts surrounding the car accident at the time. It wasn’t as simple as just an accident. I want you to reopen the case and investigate again!"
Franklin chuckled: "Are you the chief of the station or what? You say reopen, and it reopens? Plus, if it involves The Warner, it probably concerns many people. Even if I report it, it’ll likely be suppressed behind the scenes. It was closed as an accident back then; someone obviously wanted this matter suppressed."
"So you’re acknowledging that it isn’t simple, Second Brother. You’re a policeman with a sense of justice; you have to stand for the truth."
Franklin gave her a sideways glance: "You little brat are using moral pressure on me?"
"I don’t want to get involved either, but this relates to my big brother and involves the grudges between the Sutton and Warner families. It also affects your sister’s, my, happiness. If we don’t get to the bottom of it and someone leaks the news to Shane Warner, do you think I can continue living happily with him?"
Franklin took a thoughtful breath, starting to seriously contemplate before saying: "I wasn’t a policeman when this happened, so I don’t know the investigation details. Here’s the plan: I’ll go to the archives later to check out the case files from then. Let me understand the situation first."
Audrey nodded continuously, finally feeling like she wasn’t alone anymore. With her second brother as a support, her heart felt much more stable.
Franklin: "Even if we do investigate, it has to be done secretly. Stirring things up would likely lead to someone obstructing the investigation. So you shouldn’t go around talking about this."
Audrey nodded obediently.
Franklin: "I can’t show myself due to my position. If the higher-ups find out I’m investigating privately, I’ll be punished. So I can only secretly provide you with some clues and help. If you have any plans or leads, you need to let me know. Don’t act alone; if something happens to you, I can’t explain it to our parents."
Audrey laughed and said: "With Second Brother covering me, what danger could I possibly be in? So it’s settled. Only you and I know. No telling anyone, not Big Brother, and especially not Shane Warner."
