Chapter 66: The most obvious method
Luna dashes towards Lucian with her sword.
'If I don't fight, I'm going to die.' The words echo repeatedly in Luna's head as she strikes her blade against Lucian. Memory of what had happened in the last few days was fuzzy; she remembered calling Wisteria "Mother" and acting like a fool in front of her. What made Luna cringe at her memory even more was when she saw Lucian as a brother. It didn't make sense to her.
Some of Luna's memories were missing; whenever she tried remembering more than the magic that had held her captive could allow, she ended up with a splitting headache.
"Put down your sword," Lucian said to Luna. He had no intention of fighting against her, regardless of Wisteria's words.
"No." Luna swung her blade to the side, targeting Lucian's abdomen. It hasn't been up to an hour since she had been free from Wisteria's spell. Luna felt confused; the only thing she knew was that she didn't want to die.
Lucian grunted as he blocked Luna's attack. With Luna's continuous attack, he had no choice but to fight and defend himself. Knowing that Luna wasn't going to stop and listen to him, Lucian decided to take his fight with her seriously. Quickly, knocking away the sword in her hand.
Luna didn't panic. Like an animal with only one goal in mind, she rushes towards him regardless of his blade.
Unwilling to hurt Luna, Lucian pushes his blade to the side, giving Luna the perfect opportunity to jump on his back. She screamed with tears in her eyes as she tried to strangle Lucian.
Lucian choked and struggled to pull Luna away from him, but she tightened her grip around him.
"I'm not going to die." Luna mumbled to herself, "I don't want to die." She felt her breath leave her as Lucian let himself fall, making her body slam hard against the ground. Before she could recover herself, Lucian had freed himself from her grip.
Lucian was about to punch Luna hard on the face but stopped when he saw the fear reflecting in her eyes; her bangs were still tied up. Although Luna was free from Wisteria's spell, her mental state was still a mess; she hadn't fully recovered herself and had subjected herself to Wisteria's orders out of fear.
"You big dummy." Lucian knocks Luna out. Gently he pulled away the hairband that held her hair, letting her bangs cover her face again. "Hopefully this can help you recover your sense again." He glared at her. "You better thank me when you wake up."
'That's if you get to wake up,' a dark part of Lucian's mind whispers back to him.
"Luna is such a good girl. Isn't she?" Wisteria jumped into the arena and stood in front of Lucian.
"I'm not going to kill her." Lucian clenched his fist. He felt like picking up his sword again and using it to stab Wisteria.
"Normally this is the part where I let the guard take your opponent away, but since Luna followed my orders and has once been my daughter, I'm going to give her a chance."
Wisteria mumbled out a spell and made water appear at the palm of her hand; she directed the water to Luna and let it fall on her face. Instantly it woke Luna up.
"I'm going to give you a chance, dear." Wisteria said in a sweet tone. "You lost the fight, so I'm going to let you choose how you want to die. Do you want me to kill you, or would you rather kill yourself?"
'If that beast kills Lucian, then she's going to stop this fight and kill all of us.' Reed thought.
A female guard putting on a helmet steps in front of Reed, covering his view of the arena. "Come with me, human." The guard orders and drags Reed by his arm, without giving him a chance to say anything.
'Am I next?' Reed thought anxiously. But the troubling feeling in his heart calmed down when he saw that the guard was taking him away from the arena and the cell and into the street of the village.
"Does your chief want something from me?" Reed asked; he was curious and thought of how suspicious it was that this was the only guard in the village putting on a helmet while the others' faces were revealed for everyone to see. When the guard refused to give him a reply, Reed narrowed his gaze. "Who are you?" Taking the guard by surprise with his question, he was able to pull himself away.
Yasmin removes the helmet on her head, revealing her identity. Reed's eyes widen in surprise. Yasmin took out the sword by her side. "I was going to take you to my house and kill you silently, but I guess someone as evil as you doesn't deserve such a kind death. Your blood should flow on the street, and your corpse deserves to be stepped on for killing Gaia." Her voice filled with anger and hatred. Grabbing the armor that was only used by those who chose to be warriors in the village was difficult, but it was the only way Yasmin could separate Reed from other prisoners while lying to the other guards that she was following Wisteria's orders. And since Wisteria's attention was completely taken away because of Lucian, it was the perfect time to take Reed away.
'Gaia is dead?' Reed thought, confused.
"What do you mean by 'I kill Gaia?" Reed asked. He only beat Gaia with a wood. If a sword was incapable of killing Gaia, there is no way a wood would be able to kill her either.
"I have been foolish enough to let you trick me the other time. It isn't going to happen again." Yasmin raises her sword. "You ruined my life."
Reed dodged Yasmin's blade, taking note of her sloppy attack that revealed that she wasn't trained. She had more chance of killing him with her beast ability than with a sword.
"You should be afraid of me." Reed said confidently. He thought back to his fight with Gaia and realized that regardless of her strength, she couldn't free her claws from the wood he used against her. And a simple wood led to her death, which could only mean one thing. He had accidentally discovered the beast's weakness; he's the first human to discover this truth, all thanks to Yasmin's confession.
'I can't die here.' Reed thought. 'I need to tell Lucian and the others. There is a way for us to survive this dungeon after all.'
"I was able to kill Gaia; what makes you think that I wouldn't be able to kill you the same way?" Reed places one hand inside his pocket, making Yasmin's eyes follow his movement. He smirks, "Prepare to die. I still have what I used to kill Gaia with me."
Yasmin trembled in fear and shut her eyes when Reed threw something at her. When she opens her eyes and sees a broken gem, she breathes out in relief. But Reed was gone.
Reed ran back towards the arena, figuring out the reason why Yasmin chose to use a sword instead of her magic out in the street. All the beasts in the village were watching the fight except her. And they were all sensitive to magic; if Yasmin had used her magic close to the arena, Wisteria would have known, which means that Yasmin was hiding the truth of Gaia's death.
'Funny how she is afraid of death when she enjoys watching humans kill themselves.' Reed thought. He didn't know if his conclusion about Yasmin was right. She didn't look like the smart type; if she was, he wouldn't have easily gotten away. Perhaps at the end, the only reason Yasmin didn't use her magic to finish him was because she was too stupid to think of the most obvious method.
