My Doomsday Train
Chapter 85 (2): Trial by Mountain and Monster
The train slowly came to a halt. Sitting at the control console, Chen Mang stared at the scene before him, a flicker of shock in his eyes. As he drew closer to the Kunlun Mountains, a massive curtain of light became visible, separating the mountains from the Ironridge Wasteland.
The light curtain was translucent, pale green.
Three massive characters were inscribed upon it.
"Kunlun Mountains."
At the same time, the screen next to the control console began to flash red, a line of crimson text slowly scrolling across the top.
"Warning: Entering Green Zone, Kunlun Mountains."
"Highest monster level: 6. Current train level: 2. Danger coefficient is high. Immediate departure is advised."
"Level 6 monsters..."
Chen Mang stared at the warning on the screen and took a deep breath. He grabbed an ice-cold cola from the refrigerator and downed it in one go to clear his head. Then, gritting his teeth, he slammed his foot on the accelerator and drove straight through the light barrier.
He had to brave the Kunlun Mountains.
If he could just find a "Pangolin" and get the "Drill" blueprint, then when he returned to the Ironridge Wasteland, the infinite resources buried deep in the earth would be his for the taking. The train would experience exponential, explosive growth.
Otherwise, he couldn’t even afford to keep this batch of slaves.
He knew from Duo Ba that Pangolins weren’t particularly high-level. They were generally Level 2, with elites at Level 3 and bosses at Level 4. They were just cautious creatures that spent their days chewing on rocks and hiding in deep mountain valleys, making them hard to find.
The moment the train passed through the light curtain and officially entered the "Kunlun Mountains" region, Chen Mang glanced behind him.
Sure enough, the light curtain behind him had turned a translucent white, and the characters on it now read "Ironridge Wasteland."
The moment they entered the Kunlun Mountains, the terrain was no longer flat. The ground was rough and uneven, impossible for a normal train to traverse. As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but mountains.
There was almost no flat ground.
One mountain pressed up against the next.
Chen Mang immediately retracted the "Windfire Wheels" and deployed the "Spider Legs." Without this accessory, he never would have even considered coming to the Kunlun Mountains.
The Spider Legs’ maximum speed was fixed at 50 km/h at Level 1.
After upgrading them to Level 13, their top speed was now 170 km/h. While still slower than the Windfire Wheels, it was faster than many Level 1 trains, and on this mountainous terrain, it was more than enough.
"Hah..."
Chen Mang let out a nervous breath, his hands gripping the control stick tightly. The Search Radar next to him was already beeping frantically.
The radar showed a full seven Level 3 monsters and even one Level 4 monster within range.
He had only just entered the Kunlun Mountains, and the situation was already this dire.
His train would have a hard time surviving an attack from seven Level 3 monsters and one Level 4 monster all at once.
Fortunately, his "Search Radar" displayed detailed information on all creatures within its range, allowing him to easily identify a Pangolin among a group of monsters.
But—
There was no time to think.
Chen Mang’s expression changed. Three thousand meters to his left, a Level 4 monster, a "Tyrant Drake," was already roaring as it charged toward him. It was a full seven or eight meters tall, and the ground trembled with its every step.
Are you fucking with me?!
He cursed inwardly as he steered the train toward the nearest mountain. It was a sheer cliff face, nearly ninety degrees as if it had been cleaved in two by a giant sword.
Why are there dinosaurs here?
And it was three thousand meters away, with so many trees, bushes, and even hills blocking the view! How the hell did it see me?
Does it have a Search Radar, too?!
It all happened in an instant!
Just as the Level 4 Tyrant Drake was about to catch up to the train, the Stellar, which had transformed into a giant centipede, had already scrambled halfway up the ninety-degree cliff face.
The Tyrant Drake could only lift its head and roar in helpless fury, drool splattering on the ground.
"Whew."
Chen Mang let out a sigh of relief. Thank god for the Spider Legs. What are you going to do now? Fly?
The next second.
"You have got to be kidding me."
Not far away, in mid-air, an eagle with a wingspan of nearly three meters was screeching as it dove toward his train. On the Search Radar, the eagle was identified as a Level 3 monster, a "Sky-Hunting Eagle."
Unbelievable.
This was the first time he’d ever seen a flying monster. The other Train Captains in these high-level regions must live in constant misery, a true trial by fire.
Clang, clang, clang!
The Level 3 Sky-Hunting Eagle landed on a carriage and began pecking furiously at it with its terrifying beak, producing a sound like metal striking metal.
But it was only a Level 3 monster.
For now, it posed no threat to the Stellar’s Level 3 armor.
Chen Mang ignored the eagle and quickly scanned the monsters within the radar’s range. Seeing no "Pangolins," he steered the train along the cliff face, climbing toward the other side. At the very least, he had to get away from the Tyrant Drake waiting for its dinner below.
Three hours later, with his nerves stretched taut, Chen Mang finally found a relatively safe spot: an extremely tall mountain, surrounded by sheer cliffs. The peak was only about a hundred square meters—a natural fortress.
Aside from flying monsters, creatures like the Tyrant Drake would never be able to reach him.
In those three hours, he had been almost constantly chased by monsters, with no time to check all the information on his radar. Thankfully, the Train Auxiliary AI would alert him if a Pangolin ever appeared in range.
"Son of a..."
Finally safe, Chen Mang’s body trembled slightly as he wiped the sweat from his brow. He had just experienced what it truly meant to run for your life. Even a Level 4 train would have a hard time surviving here.
The terrain was just too complex.
He’d had a hard enough time with the Spider Legs; he had no idea how other trains managed to survive. He hadn’t seen a single one so far.
Just then—
Before he had a moment to react, he felt the mountain beneath the train begin to shake violently. The Search Radar indicated that a Level 4 monster, a "Rock Serpent," was rapidly tunneling through the mountain, heading straight for him!
"Shit!"
He didn’t even have time to get out a full curse, only able to steer the train in a desperate flight, scrambling along the cliff face toward another mountain range.
But just then—
He saw something that left him utterly stunned. Not far away, a train was flying through the air, soaring between sky and earth like a sky-train.
