CHAPTER 31: TANGERINE FAIRY

"CHU WONHEE, rise and shine~"

What?

Wonhee opened her eyes and got up abruptly, expecting to find familiar faces.

However, what greeted her was a tangerine.

A tangerine with an emoji-like face and a pair of white wings.

Wonhee gasped. "Oh my gosh. You’re so cute! Are you a monster?"

The winged tangerine looked offended. "Miss Chu, you called me cute and then you asked if I was a monster? I don’t know how I’d feel about it."

"Oh, I’m sorry," Wonhee said, feeling genuinely apologetic. "I didn’t mean it as an insult. When I called you a monster, I was actually thinking about the cute and harmless little animals found in some dungeons. I’m sorry if I offended you."

"If that’s the case, then I forgive you."

"Thank you," Wonhee said. "What should I call you?"

"I don’t have a name, so you can give me one. Just so you know, I’m not a monster. I’m just The System’s Administrator in charge of you, Miss Chu."

"Then can I call you... Tangerine Fairy?"

"That’s an interesting choice. I’ll take it."

"Do you have, like, a gender?

"I’m a baby."

Wonhee smiled at that. "Oh, okay."

She then turned around to see where she was.

It seemed like she was in a... PC café?

She woke up lying down on a bed. But in just the blink of an eye, she found herself sitting on what seemed like a gaming chair.

Then several Windows began popping up left and right.

Chu Wonhee, on behalf of The System, we’d like to apologize to you for your late Awakening.

As an apology, The System shall give you plenty of buffs!

Visual Upgrade x3!

Fear Resistance x3!

Health & Stamina x3!

Sturdy Body x2!

Basic Senses Upgrade!

"Unfortunately, we can’t upgrade your fighting skills because you’re a Guide and a non-combatant Awakened Person," the Tangerine Fairy explained. "So The System decided to give you a set of skills that will help you survive in your new reality."

More Status Windows began popping up.

I’m The Luckiest Girl in the World Skill attained!

I Must Be Protected At All Cost Skill attained!

What Yours Is Mine, and What Mine Is Yours Skill attained!

Sharing Is Caring Skill attained!

You Don’t Deserve Me Skill attained!

Pfft.

Wonhee couldn’t help but smile at the names of the skills that she had received.

She could vaguely guess what those skills were based on what the names suggested, but of course, she would appreciate a detailed explanation.

"Chu Wonhee, you were supposed to be awakened when the Outbreak began."

Wonhee’s eyes widened a bit. "Really?"

The Tangerine Fairy nodded.

[Well... more like it bounced in the air?]

"But the ability granted to you by The System is something that the strongest Hunters would need, so The System decided to delay your awakening as it nurtures the people who are supposed to protect you," the Tangerine Fairy said. "Now that those people have passed The System’s standards, we figured it’s time for you to awaken. So, here we are now."

"I see," Wonhee said, nodding as her brain began to process what the Tangerine Fairy had said. "Why me, though?"

"Because you were born under the Lucky Star."

"Hmm?"

"I know it might be insensitive to call you lucky after you experienced losing your parents twice, but your luck as someone born under the Lucky Star is tremendous," the Tangerine Fairy explained. "In the kind of world that you have right now, it’s not enough to be strong. One also needs luck to survive. And you have that, Chu Wonhee. The luck that you were born with would not only save your life, but the entire world as well."

To be honest, it wasn’t hard to believe.

After all, Wonhee knew that she only survived unscathed after the Outbreak because she was lucky to be born into a family that could protect her.

She turned to the two particular Status Windows that caught her attention.

"About the What Yours is Mine, and What’s Mine is Yours Skill and the Sharing is Caring Skill..." Wonhee asked, looking at the Tangerine Fairy this time. "Are those the skills that will allow me to share my luck with other people?"

"That’s right," the Tangerine Fairy confirmed while nodding. "You’ll activate the What Yours is Mine, and What’s Mine is Yours Skill soon, but the Sharing is Caring Skill is a bit complicated. The System will guide you to unlocking your skills one by one, so don’t worry about it."

"Got it. What’s the catch, though?"

"Hmm?"

"You said The System needs my luck to save the world. How do I use it to help others?"

"Oh. I’m glad you understand the responsibilities that come with becoming an Awakened Person."

Wonhee nodded thoughtfully.

To be honest, she had always felt guilty for living well while the entire world was on the verge of collapsing after the Outbreak.

And so, she was happy to know that she could give back to the world now.

"Because of your tremendous luck, The System had to give you an Irregularity," the Tangerine Fairy said in a sad voice. "I’m sorry, Chu Wonhee. We did our best, but we have to make it fair for the other Awakened People."

Okay, hearing that made her nervous.

Wonhee got even more nervous when, suddenly, a red Status Window popped up right in front of her.

WARNING!

CONDITION: Change Hwang Yejun’s status from X-Class Hunter à S-Class Hunter, and free him from the grasp of the Awakened People Association.

TIME LIMIT: 365 Days.

PENALTY: Death!

Wonhee gasped when she read the time limit and the penalty part. "I’ll die if I don’t succeed in helping Hwang Yejun gain his S-Class Hunter status back and free him from APA in a year?"

"The System has to give you the heaviest penalty to match the tremendous luck that you possess, Chu Wonhee," the Tangerine Fairy explained. "But, as I said earlier, we will guide you every step of the way."

Another Status Window popped up.

FIRST GUIDING STEP: 48 Hour of Sleep.

STATUS: Completed!

SECOND GUIDING STEP: Tuck Hwang Yejun in bed every night and give him eight hours of uninterrupted sleep for a month!

PROGRESS: 0%

SKILL NEEDED: Welcome to Chu Wonhee’s Sleeping Salon!

"Oh. That’s the name of the skill that lets me put Hwang Yejun to sleep?"

"Yes," the Tangerine Fairy said. "Only you have the power to put S-Class Hunters to sleep, Chu Wonhee. And, as you know, S-Class Hunters cannot sleep without their Guide since they’re always pestered by the Static every time they fall asleep. That’s why The System gave you the Sleeping Salon that you can use to help the S-Class Hunters rest peacefully."

Huh?

"Why are we only talking about S-Class Hunters?" Wonhee asked, confused. "How about Hunters from the lower Classes?"

"You’re an S-Class Guide, Chu Wonhee," the Tangerine Fairy said. "Your ability only works on Awakened People with an S-Class grade or above."
