CHAPTER 57: CHAPTER 57: I TOOK THE MEDICINE

Opening the door, Shannon Quinn looked at Landon Sutton with an awkward smile, "Why are you here so soon?"

"I came over as soon as I finished what I had to do."

Shannon stepped aside, "...Come in and sit."

After he entered the house, Shannon worriedly glanced outside, always feeling like Vincent Rhodes’ people were watching her. Would they have seen her invite Landon Sutton into her home and reported it back to Vincent Rhodes?

She was innocent, yet she didn’t understand why she felt so guilty.

"Want to change your shoes?"

"No... no need, I have to mop the floor later." The shoe cabinet never had men’s shoes.

"I brought a bottle of wine, maybe we can have a couple of drinks later?"

Shannon glanced at the wine bottle in his hand. If she weren’t pregnant, she might have had a drink with him.

"I don’t drink."

"Really? Not even wine?" Landon Sutton glanced subtly at her abdomen, placing the wine on the dining table.

"Hardly ever. I’ll go busy myself in the kitchen; you can watch TV for a bit." Shannon returned to the kitchen, fearing that if he asked more, he might suspect her pregnancy.

It was strange; she thought there wouldn’t be any further entanglement after that night.

From the kitchen, she watched him sit on the sofa and turn on the TV. From the sound, it seemed like the news channel.

For a moment, her mind blurred, thinking this was what a home should feel like.

And coincidentally, the man outside was the father of the child in her belly...

Realizing how dangerous her thoughts were, Shannon quickly shook her head and continued chopping vegetables.

She already felt guilty enough towards Vincent Rhodes, she couldn’t be more unrighteous.

"Do you need any help?"

Lost in her thoughts, Landon Sutton’s voice suddenly sounded behind her, startling Shannon so much that she almost dropped the knife. Turning to glance at him, she said, "No need!"

Landon Sutton leaned against the kitchen doorframe, watching her cook with an apron on, a broad grin spreading across his face.

No matter the identity, he felt satisfied just having her in his sight.

In front of her, many things became unpredictable, and he greedily wanted to see her more, using all means and measures, wanting to spend more time with her.

"...You should go rest in the living room, I’ll call you when it’s ready."

He stood in the doorway staring at her, and Miss Quinn felt utterly uncomfortable.

Unexpectedly, he didn’t leave and even asked, "When did you start learning to cook?"

Shannon paused, not opening up about her past like she did with Vincent, just giving a vague response, "Living alone, you pick up a thing or two. Do it enough times and you’ll get it."

Landon Sutton pondered for a moment and asked, "How come I feel like your husband is rarely home? And there’s no sign of his shoes in the shoe cabinet. Are you two living apart?"

Faced with such personal questions, Shannon didn’t answer directly, just said, "He’s quite busy."

"Having such a lovely, capable wife at home, what could be so pressing that he can’t take time? He must be blind to his good fortune."

Shannon just smiled silently, continuing her tasks while her mind drifted.

Perhaps in Vincent’s heart, she was always someone who didn’t matter.

She yearned for a quiet and stable life, but marrying Vincent Rhodes seemed to make stability unattainable.

Because he was the turmoil in her life.

"You... truly don’t plan to remarry? A woman should find someone who appreciates her, don’t..."

"My husband and I have a good relationship; I hope, Mr. Sutton, you won’t say such things again, or we might not even stay friends."

Listening to her serious words, Landon Sutton laughed, said no more, and turned to leave the kitchen.

In no time, the dishes were on the table—four dishes and a soup, quite the hospitality.

"...Not sure if it suits your taste, but please make do."

"Looks delicious." He said as he poured wine into a glass, handing one to Shannon, "Want some? This wine isn’t very strong."

Shannon swallowed nervously, politely declining, "I really can’t drink, Mr. Sutton, you go ahead."

"What’s the matter? Afraid that night will repeat itself?"

Shannon’s expression stiffened, "Don’t bring that up again."

"Alright, alright, I won’t, but..." He pretended to pause, taking a sip of the wine, savoring it, then locked eyes with Shannon, smiling faintly, "We didn’t take precautions that night, do you think you might be pregnant?"

Shannon’s hand trembled slightly holding the chopsticks, then she composed herself and said, "You’re overthinking it, Mr. Sutton. I took precautions."

Landon Sutton chuckled meaningfully, "That’s good."

Shannon’s face remained calm, but her heart was racing.

She wondered what she had done in her past life to deserve encountering all this in this one.

He picked up the chopsticks, tasted all the dishes, then said, "If I had such a capable wife, I’d come home every day to eat her cooking, even if I earned nothing."

Shannon paused in her chewing motion, just glanced at him and said nothing, continuing to eat her meal.

In her heart, there was still some resentment towards Vincent Rhodes, hoping not for him to come back every day, but at least tell her basic things about his whereabouts as his wife.

Come and go as he pleases, never notifying her, centering everything on himself without considering others’ feelings.

That night, lying next to him, even in his embrace, she felt a great distance between them, as if she could never get close or open him up to share his life with her.

That feeling of being kept in the dark made her think he never considered her part of his life.

"Can I come over to mooch food daily from now on?"

Shannon snapped out of it immediately, saying, "No way."

"It’s just you eating anyway, a few more tableware is all. If you’re worried, I can bring my own."

Shannon glared at him, "If my husband finds out, you won’t have it easy."

"What? Is he going to stand up from the wheelchair to hit me? You should thank me instead for miraculously curing him."

Shannon rolled her eyes, then realizing something, asked him, "How do you know he’s in a wheelchair?"

She didn’t suspect they were the same person, just assumed Landon had met Vincent and was trying to dig up some info on Vincent through Landon.

And Landon Sutton, unfazed, smiled lightly, "Isn’t that the talk outside? The distant relative of the Rhodes Family, wheelchair-bound due to congenital disability."

"Have you seen him?"

Landon Sutton calmly added wine to a glass, looked up at Shannon, smilingly asked, "Have you?"
