CHAPTER 64: CHAPTER 64: IT’S MY FAULT, BROTHER

Shannon Quinn paused for a moment, thinking that Landon Sutton might have privately mentioned Jett Quinn to Simon Rhodes, so she wasn’t too surprised. She just said, "Thank you, big brother."

"No problem, the safety of you and the child is the most important. Vincent is my brother, you’re his wife, he can’t show up personally, so he asked me to take care of you both. If anything similar happens in the future, let me know immediately."

"...Alright." She wanted to learn about Vincent from Simon Rhodes, but she knew Simon wouldn’t tell her much, so she gave up the idea, held her umbrella, and walked into the building.

Knowing that Jett Quinn wouldn’t appear here anymore, Shannon Quinn felt much more at ease.

Back home, she put the clothes she had changed out of earlier in the washing machine, heated a cup of milk, turned on the TV, but her attention was elsewhere.

Suddenly remembering something, she got up, took out the keys Landon Sutton had given her from her bag, and went to the apartment next door.

The kitten was curled up asleep on the rug at the door. Hearing the noise, it lazily moved its body, using its soft paws to pat at its head.

Entering the room, she checked the cat food bowl. Fortunately, Landon Sutton had left enough food and water, so Shannon Quinn added some more to ensure the kitten wouldn’t go hungry.

After playing with the kitten for a while, she stood up and continued surveying the room in the light.

It seemed uninhabited frequently, apart from some essential daily items, there was nothing related to his hobbies or interests.

Only a few outdated military newspapers were on the coffee table.

Why was she probing into his preferences?

Coming to her senses, Shannon Quinn hurriedly averted her gaze, watching as the kitten obediently lay on the fluffy carpet, she relaxed and closed the door, returning to her own apartment.

The night deepened, and the rain had lessened significantly.

The man lying on the hospital bed didn’t know how long he’d been asleep, but he finally opened his eyes.

He squinted at the somewhat dazzling light, turning his neck to survey the surroundings.

"Master Nate? You finally woke up!"

His gaze slowly focused, recognizing the person by the bed.

As his consciousness gradually returned, he recalled the events of the last moment of memory and hoarsely asked, "How is she? Is she alright?"

Ronan Rhodes was momentarily stunned before realizing who "she" referred to, and helplessly said, "Master Nate, you’re still thinking of others in your state? Did you know you almost died? If something happened to you, how would I explain to your superiors? How would I explain to your brothers?"

"How is she?"

"She’s doing fine. After seeing you come out of surgery, she went home to rest and should come tomorrow morning."

Hearing that Shannon Quinn was safe, Landon Sutton visibly breathed a sigh of relief.

"I’ll call the doctor to report, and Eldest Young Master Rhodes is also here. I’ll let him know."

Landon Sutton didn’t react as the doctor came in to check him, asking a few questions. He was safe, but was reminded to eat lightly and rest well.

Simon Rhodes was relieved at this too, but due to Ronan Rhodes being present, he couldn’t say much to Landon Sutton.

"Did they catch the person?" Landon Sutton asked.

Ronan Rhodes poured a cup of hot water, responding, "They caught him, still interrogating. Master Nate, are you being followed by someone lately?"

"Find out who was behind it."

"I also don’t think it’s an accident. I saw the surveillance footage, it seemed deliberate. After hitting the person, they calmly drove away, which isn’t the psychological nerve of an ordinary person."

Landon Sutton just wanted to know whether the person was targeting him or going after Shannon Quinn.

If it was aimed at him, that would be manageable. If it was Shannon Quinn, he had to eliminate the threat against her.

"Go downstairs and buy something, I’m a bit hungry."

"Alright, alright, I’ll go right away. What do you want to eat, Master Nate?"

"Anything."

"Young Master Rhodes, I’ll trouble you to watch over Master Nate first, I’ll be back soon." Ronan Rhodes grabbed his coat and car keys, and quickly left.

Landon Sutton just wanted to send Ronan Rhodes away. Simon Rhodes walked over and closed the door to the ward, returning to the bedside, looking at Landon Sutton with an expression and tone full of reprimand, "You’ve been increasingly reckless lately. Have you not learned your lesson from last time?"

"It might not be directed at me."

"What do you mean?"

Landon Sutton let out a deep breath and shook his head thoughtfully, "Let’s wait for the police investigation results. Send two more people to follow her."

"You’re saying today’s incident was aimed at Shannon?"

"Perhaps."

After pondering for two seconds, Simon Rhodes said to him, "I’ve long told you to reduce your contact with Shannon, don’t drag her into this. How much longer can you be with her?"

Landon Sutton looked down, his gaze was profound and gloomy, then he propped himself up. Although Simon Rhodes scolded him, he was still the first to assist him, placing a pillow behind his back.

"Brother, do you have a cigarette?"

"Smoking at a time like this? I’m telling you, if you keep going like this, I won’t know how long I can keep it from Grandpa. Be sensible for your own sake. After the mission’s over, return to Shannon, act properly, it benefits everyone. With things so unstable now, you should keep personal affairs aside for the time being."

Landon Sutton took a deep breath, his gaze unfocused as it landed on the floor, and he asked plainly, "Brother, have you ever liked someone?"

Simon Rhodes remained silent, only watching him, listening as he continued speaking, "Sometimes I hate it, being born to bear these burdens, no one asked if I wanted to. Honestly, managing to live to this day is a testament to my strong fate."

"...It’s my failure as your brother, these burdens were meant for me."

Landon Sutton smiled slightly and looked at Simon Rhodes saying, "No one is at fault here. You say I bear these burdens for you, then who do you bear them for? Someone has to shoulder the load, and I’m not venting it on you."

"Before meeting Shannon, I felt like this was my life’s mission. Even if sacrificed, it would be a good ending, but now things are different. Brother, do you know what it’s like to care for someone from the heart?"

Landon Sutton smiled self-deprecatingly, his tone helpless and bitter, "I can’t let her go. Wanting to live afraid to die, just hoping to spend moments with her. Fearing this separation might be forever..."

"So you really have to take care of yourself. Shannon now has your child, you must return safely to them both, don’t be careless again."

"Okay."

"I’ll let Shannon visit you at the hospital these days, take the chance to spend time with her. The holiday is short, once back at Dragonspire, stay focused."

Landon Sutton nodded, indeed realizing he had indulged himself too much lately. Yet, in front of Shannon Quinn, he couldn’t seem to control his emotions.
