CHAPTER 609: CHAPTER 608 QUACK DOCTOR HARMS PEOPLE (2/10)

A dilapidated red brick-tiled house.

A layer of grass has grown on the roof, and there are two small yet already sizeable elm trees on the ridge.

The yard is still just dirt, without any paving of bricks, let alone cement, and there are even some small puddles.

On one side of the courtyard wall, there is a chicken coop covered with green netting, housing about a dozen egg hens, with a thick layer of chicken droppings on the ground.

On the other side, there are two goats, with quite a bit of fodder piled nearby.

Following Li Wanwan into the house, Yang Chen couldn’t help but feel a pang of sour emotion in his nose.

The old-fashioned house doesn’t have good lighting, and the floor isn’t moisture-proof or waterproof. As soon as you enter, a musty smell assaults your nostrils.

The floor inside is also uneven and hasn’t even been laid with cement.

There is a wooden sofa in the room, with a natural wood color, the type that carpenters make, and it hasn’t even been painted red.

The small square table has some red paint, but due to long use, it’s already rusty and stained.

There are only a few portraits of leaders hanging on the wall, with extremely simple decorations, and when you look up, you can still see the roof beams.

"My mom is in the room, her health is poor, and she can’t get out of bed," Li Wanwan said softly.

Upon hearing this, Yang Chen hurriedly asked, "What happened?"

Li Wanwan whispered, "After my brother was buried, my mom went to work in the fields; that day it rained heavily, and she didn’t come back. When we went to look for her, she was already lying in the mud pit. After we sent her to the hospital, we found that her leg was broken. Although it was set later, because too much time had passed, it left a chronic pain condition; on cloudy and rainy days, it hurts badly, and now she can barely move."

Hearing this, Yang Chen immediately lifted the curtain beside him and walked into the inner room.

As soon as he entered the room, Yang Chen immediately detected a strong smell of poor-quality plasters.

On the bed lay a woman with a pale face.

"Auntie," seeing the woman, Yang Chen couldn’t help his eyes from reddening.

The aunt slightly opened her eyes and looked at Yang Chen, "You are..."

Yang Chen said in a deep voice, "I am the captain of Sai Zi, I’ve come to see you all!"

"Captain? The captain is here? Wanwan, help me up!" The aunt struggled to get up quickly.

Yang Chen hurriedly stopped her, "Auntie, don’t move, just rest well, you don’t need to get up."

But the aunt insisted on sitting up.

She held Yang Chen’s hand and said, "You are the captain that Sai Zi wrote about in the letter, right?"

"Yes!" Yang Chen nodded.

"Then you are a good captain; Sai Zi said you took good care of him!"

Yang Chen smiled slightly and lowered his head, feeling particularly uncomfortable.

"How did you know about this place? We’re fine; don’t worry about us," the aunt said.

Yang Chen said solemnly, "We checked the information registered back then and came just to try our luck to see if you were still here."

"Where else could we go? I’ve been like this, staying here all my life."

Yang Chen thought for a moment, then said to the aunt, "Let me check your pulse; I used to be a battlefield doctor, and I know a bit about medicine."

The aunt didn’t refuse, extending her hand for Yang Chen to take her pulse.

Yang Chen felt the aunt’s pulse for a moment and couldn’t help but furrow his brows.

After thinking for a while, Yang Chen asked, "Auntie, could you let me see your leg?"

"Don’t look, it’s disgusting," the aunt reluctantly said.

Yang Zhan stood up and gave Gao Hong a look.

Gao Hong understood and immediately walked to the end of the bed.

Yang Chen said, "We’ll just take a quick glance, only up to the calf; don’t worry."

Yang Chen nodded to Gao Hong.

Gao Hong immediately set to work.

As soon as the quilt was rolled back from the end of the bed, Gao Hong’s brows immediately furrowed.

Yang Chen leaned over to look and couldn’t help but curse, "Quack doctor! Damn quack doctor! Truly a deadly harm!"

The aunt’s calf was already severely atrophied, and her foot was starting to ulcerate. At this rate, the entire leg might have to be amputated.

Yang Chen was so furious that his fists clenched, crackling with anger.

"Who performed the surgery?" Gao Hong asked, angered.

Li Wanwan, frightened by the two men’s fury, trembled all over and replied in a choked voice, "It...it was a doctor from our town."

"The bones weren’t set properly, didn’t you go back to him?" Gao Hong shouted.

Li Wanwan whispered, "We did, they said it was my mom’s fault for not being careful, which caused the bones to misalign, and we couldn’t blame them!"

"Nonsense!" Gao Hong was extremely angry, "I’ll damn well skin him alive right now!"

Yang Chen yanked Gao Hong back, scolding, "Don’t be rash!"

"This is just intolerable!" Gao Hong shouted with bulging eyes.

He couldn’t stand seeing the relatives of his comrades being bullied like this!

"Shut up!" Yang Chen scolded.

Now is not the time to pursue such things.

Yang Chen signaled Gao Hong to cover the quilt and said to the aunt, "Please rest well; I’ll think of a way to treat you."

"There’s no need, I’m old and should have died long ago, without dragging the children down; don’t trouble yourselves," the aunt spoke with despair in her voice.

Yang Chen sighed and walked out of the room.

In the courtyard, Yang Chen asked Li Wanwan, "Where’s your dad?"

At this question, Li Wanwan’s eyes reddened, and tears started falling down.

Seeing this, Yang Chen exchanged glances with Gao Hong, feeling a sense of foreboding.

Li Wanwan, sobbing, said, "My brother’s salary was high, he sent home four to five thousand every month, and later, thousands at a time, so we had saved a lot of money, being quite well-off in the area. Later, after my brother sacrificed himself, we got a large family settlement, too. But after my mom’s accident, the treatment cost a lot, and seeing no cure, my dad ran off with the money, never came back; otherwise, we wouldn’t be this poor now."

Hearing this, Yang Chen clenched his fist and looked at Sun Yue, speaking coldly, "Can you handle this matter?"

Sun Yue took out her phone, "Give me two days!"

With that, Sun Yue walked out with her phone.

Yang Chen said to Li Wanwan, "Don’t worry, we’ll find your dad and also help treat your mom."

Li Wanwan sniffed and nodded, saying to Yang Chen, "Bro, you’re my brother’s captain; I know you were kind to him, thank you for still coming to help us, thank you!"

Yang Chen sighed, placing his hand on Li Wanwan’s shoulder seriously, "Don’t worry, everything will get better. Where is your brother’s grave? Take us to pay respects."

Li Wanwan said, "It’s in the back mountain, I’ll take you there."

Yang Chen told Gao Hong, "There was a convenience store when we came; go buy something."

"Yes!" Gao Hong immediately stepped out.

Under Li Wanwan’s guidance, they arrived at the back mountain.

The back mountain seemed to be used solely as a cemetery by their village, with grave mounds everywhere, and it was hard to tell which belonged to whom without any markers.

But Li Wanwan knew clearly, guiding Yang Chen and the others to a grave mound, and she pointed at it, "This is my brother’s grave."
