Honestly, the first word out of Rina’s mouth wasn’t ’Mama’ but ’Papa,’ which was quite unfortunate for Erina.
According to some boring authoritative analysis and statistics, "Mama" is the simplest pronunciation globally, as it’s a natural result of an infant opening their mouth and exhaling. The second simplest pronunciation is "Papa."
Despite vast linguistic differences across regions, the sound ’Mama’ is almost consistent from Asia to Europe. It’s very simple: infants cry out when they’re hungry, and when they open their mouths, the easiest sound for them to make is ’Ma,’ which is close to the crying sound ’wa.’ As soon as they make this sound, their mother will come to actively feed them, and from then on, infants begin to record this sound, knowing that crying this way will get them milk.
Therefore, infants usually learn to say ’Mama’ first. It’s rare for a child’s first word to be ’Papa,’ and generally only happens if the father is very close to the child and takes care of them more diligently than the mother. It’s just particularly strange.
Why was Rina so clingy to him?
"Let’s go, let’s eat in the inner hall," Senzaemon Nakiri waved. The banquet in the outer hall had many dishes laid out for guests to freely enjoy. However, most people who came weren’t primarily there to eat, but rather to expand their social circles. Still, it’s worth noting that at Nakiri family banquets, the dishes displayed in the outer hall are often mostly eaten by the end of the event.
Sometimes, even the most important social interactions cannot resist the allure of delicious food.
At this moment, Chika Fujiwara had already taken Kaguya Shinomiya around, eating here and there. Kaguya Shinomiya, however, was quite distracted; she was already captivated by Renz’s adorable daughter. She really wanted to hold her. After winding through a few more corridors, Senzaemon Nakiri finally arrived at a private living room in the inner hall.
The joy of the wealthy was this simple.
"Alice and Hisako will also be coming later," Senzaemon Nakiri said with a smile. "All the dishes on this table were personally made by me. It’s been a long time since I cooked, so I’m a bit out of practice." He sighed. Renz surveyed the incredibly lavish delicacies on the table.
The Old Man personally cooked a whole table of dishes?
He had to try them properly. This table in the inner hall was even more exquisite than the dishes in the large hall outside. The Old Man claimed he was out of practice, but the feast he prepared must have taken considerable effort. It made sense.
Erina’s God’s Tongue had high demands for cuisine.
"Renz, is the money in your bank account enough?"
Senzaemon Nakiri gave a hint, asking Renz. Renz was about to say "enough." The Old Man didn’t give him the chance. "Tomorrow, I’ll transfer another two hundred thousand US dollars to you," Senzaemon Nakiri pondered slightly. "Feels a bit small, how about five hundred thousand US dollars?"
Damn, as a son-in-law living off his wife’s family, he was probably unique in reaching this level of reliance.
"I’ll pay it back later," Renz didn’t refuse. His current life was a bit tight. Having this money, and giving it all to Erina, would ensure their short-term living expenses.
Temporarily borrowing this money was fine. Renz would pay it back once he made his fortune, he still remembered his agreement with the Old Man. But it seemed the Old Man was convinced Renz would lose, thinking Renz wouldn’t last a few years and would obediently marry into the Nakiri family as a live-in son-in-law.
"It’s fine if you don’t pay it back," Senzaemon Nakiri still maintained his smile. "Alice and them will be here soon."
Renz and Erina, as chefs, paid great attention to table etiquette, especially Erina, who came from a prestigious family; she would absolutely not touch her chopsticks until all the guests had arrived.
When Alice and Hisako appeared at the entrance, Hisako walked over and opened her arms. Erina understood the gesture and embraced Hisako. Alice, however, was up to no good. She headed straight for Renz.
Her target wasn’t Renz, but the baby seat next to Renz, specially for infants.
Target - little Rina.
Rina, sitting in the baby seat, stared with wide eyes at the unwelcome intruder. Renz, meanwhile, picked up the Old Man’s special kiwi fruit juice on the table, took a sip, and tasted its sweet and sour flavor. At that moment. Alice stared at Rina and uttered a sentence.
"Say ’Mama’."
Renz choked on the kiwi fruit juice he had just drunk. Hearing Alice’s words, he was a little bewildered.
"Papa." Rina only knew this one word now. Even if Alice insisted, she wouldn’t say it, nor did she understand the meaning of Alice’s actions. Erina, still chatting idly with Hisako, turned around like a ghost.
"What are you doing?" Erina patted Alice’s shoulder, a vein throbbing on her forehead.
"Oh, I was just wondering when little Rina would say ’Mama’," Alice smiled broadly. Making Erina’s daughter call her ’Mama’ would surely be incredibly satisfying, and Erina would undoubtedly be furious. Unfortunately, the plan didn’t succeed.
"Do you think Rina would acknowledge a thief as her mother?" Erina couldn’t tolerate this behavior. She mercilessly moved Rina’s baby seat behind her own seat.
"Nonsense," Renz righteously criticized Alice’s behavior.
"Wifey, this is your favorite."
Renz picked up a piece of succulent meat and placed it in Erina’s bowl, hoping to appease her. Erina wasn’t so petty as to stay angry to that extent. As Renz placed the meat in her bowl, her anger largely dissipated.
"Speaking of which, I’m your sister. I don’t think it’s a
problem for your daughter to call me her godmother," Alice was an expert at stirring the pot. Just as Renz had calmed things down, Alice started to fan the flames for Erina again.
"Then can your daughter call my husband ’Daddy’?" Erina found it intolerable.
"Of course, it’s fine for Renz to be my daughter’s godfather," Alice quickly replied, without a moment’s hesitation. Erina knew Alice’s bottom line was very low, but she never expected it to be so shameless. Renz was quick-witted.
"Don’t worry, she doesn’t have a daughter yet," Renz again diffused the situation. His speed at extinguishing fires, his efficiency in responding to emergencies, was top-notch.
However, Alice’s ability to incite trouble was ridiculous.
"Why are you only picking things for me?" Erina noticed at this point that her bowl had many small dishes in it.
Renz had arranged the dishes he picked for Erina like a
plating. On the white rice, small portions from different dishes were arranged on top, making it look like a complete, luxurious donburi. Erina picked a piece of meat from her own bowl and gave it back to him.
"Isn’t this your favorite?" Renz countered.
"I have plenty here, sharing a piece with you," Erina continued. "Besides, I’m not handless, can’t I pick my own?"
"Then I thank my dear wife for her great kindness," Renz ate the piece of meat with rice, then commented, "The meat given by my wife is delicious!"
"Then you eat this piece too," Erina picked up another piece of meat, this time seeming to want to put it directly into Renz’s mouth instead of his bowl. Renz and Erina, imperceptibly, became the protagonists at the dinner table.
Senzaemon Nakiri, who had been eating from his bowl, put down his chopsticks. His gaze was thoughtful. Wasn’t this his cooking? And Alice, sitting next to the Old Man, her smile gradually turned heavy. Something felt off?
Was I just fed another mouthful of dog food?
