Naruto: The Strongest System
Chapter 25: The Exam Unfolds
Chapter 25: The Exam Unfolds
Ren's two years of relentless, clandestine training had borne significant fruit. His strength had grown exponentially. Drawing on memories from his past life, he had even developed new techniques: *Chidori Senbon* and *Chidori Sharp Spear*, deadly variations of his original Lightning Release. His mastery of the Rokushiki had also advanced, evolving the Finger Gun into the more powerful *Ten-Finger Gun* and the ultimate *Rokushiki's Ultimate Secret: Rokuōgan*. These were his own creations, honed through effort and insight, not system exchanges. His innate talent was undeniable.
*It's really getting exciting,* he thought with a sharp grin.

In the Hokage's office, a gathering of Chunin and Jonin sensei awaited their leader's word.
"By the looks on your faces, I assume you all know the time has come," the Third Hokage stated, taking a long draw from his pipe.
"This matter has been announced to the other nations. Shinobi from many other villages are already within our walls," noted Asuma Sarutobi, a cigarette dangling from his own lips.
"Indeed. When does it begin?" Kurenai Yuhi asked softly.
"In one week."
"So soon?" Kakashi remarked, his single visible eye glancing around the room.
The Third Hokage stood up, his presence filling the room. "Now, I officially announce that the Chunin Selection Exams will commence one week from today, on the first of July. This meeting is adjourned."
With a chorus of affirmatives, the shinobi dispersed to inform their Genin teams.
The following week was a whirlwind of nervous preparation for the young Genin of Konoha.
Finally, the day arrived. The first phase was a written test, held in a designated classroom. As in the original timeline, Team 7 had a run-in with Might Guy's team, leading to a confrontation between Sasuke and Rock Lee. However, the outcome was different. Driven by the humiliating memory of his powerlessness against the Root and ANBU operatives years prior, Sasuke had trained with even more ferocious intensity. His skills had surpassed his original self. The skirmish with Lee ended not in defeat, but in a stalemate, though both were holding back. Lee, stopped by Might Guy's timely arrival, ominously informed Sasuke that he hadn't used his full strength and that there was a Genin in his team even stronger than himself—his primary target for the exams.
In the examination hall, the Konoha 9 reunited. The spy, Kabuto Yakushi, made his appearance, showcasing his fabricated data cards and effortlessly handling a group of aggressive Otogakure shinobi. Then, the intimidating proctor, Ibiki Morino, and his squad arrived, announcing the start of the test.
Candidates cheated with ingenious, desperate methods. At the final moment, Ibiki presented the infamous "tenth question," a psychological gambit designed to weed out those without resolve. Under the immense pressure, many candidates broke, choosing to withdraw. It was Naruto's defiant, blood-pumping declaration that steeled the nerves of the remaining examinees. Ibiki then revealed the true purpose of the test: to evaluate their intelligence-gathering and, more importantly, their will to persevere under pressure. All who remained passed.
The second proctor, Anko Mitarashi, made a flashy entrance, arrogantly announcing that over half of them would be eliminated in the next phase and to await details from their guides. The next day, the Genin assembled at the entrance to the 44th Training Ground—the Forest of Death. After Anko explained the brutal rules and they signed liability waivers, they stepped into the treacherous forest. Unbeknownst to them, a monster walked among them—Orochimaru, the legendary Sannin turned S-class rogue.
Shortly after entering the forest, Team 7 was hunted by Orochimaru. Under the effect of his Killing Intent, Sasuke was paralyzed with a fear so profound he could barely move. As he was about to surrender their scroll to save his life, Naruto burst onto the scene, refusing to give up. Though outmatched, Naruto's fearless, agile struggle against the impossible odds ignited a spark in Sasuke. He fought back, using a clever combination of a wire-guided Fuma Shuriken and Fire Release, seemingly scoring a hit. Pleased with Sasuke's potential, Orochimaru rewarded him by branding him with the Cursed Seal of Heaven. The agonizing pain rendered Sasuke unconscious. Before leaving, Orochimaru told Sakura that Sasuke would eventually seek him out for power.
While Sakura tended to the unconscious Sasuke and Naruto, they were attacked by a team of Sound ninja sent by Orochimaru to finish the job. Sakura fought desperately, cutting her own hair in a symbolic act of resolve, but she and the newly arrived Team 10 were overpowered. Just as Team Guy arrived to assist, Sasuke awoke, the Cursed Seal's black patterns crawling across his skin. Consumed by its dark power and rage, he brutally attacked the Sound ninja, easily breaking one's arm. He was on the verge of killing them all when Sakura, seeing he had lost control, rushed forward and hugged him, begging him to stop. Her action broke through the curse's influence, calming him. The terrified Sound ninja fled, leaving their scroll behind.
Team 7 passed the second exam. The Third Hokage addressed the survivors, explaining the purpose of the Chunin Exams before announcing the third test: preliminary matches to reduce their numbers for the final tournament.
In his first match, Sasuke faced one of the Sound ninja, a user of chakra-absorption techniques. Kakashi had warned him not to use the Cursed Seal. Unable to rely on it, and with his chakra being drained, Sasuke was pushed to his limits. He slightly modified the Strong Fist taijutsu he'd copied from Lee, creating his own *Lion Combo*, and with sheer willpower, he suppressed the seal's influence and won. After the match, Kakashi placed a temporary seal on the mark.
Orochimaru appeared, taunting them that the seal was ultimately beyond their control, and that Sasuke would crave its power. A brief, tense standoff between Kakashi and Orochimaru ensued before the snake Sannin vanished.
The preliminaries continued fiercely. In the end, nine finalists were decided:
From Konoha: Uzumaki Naruto, Uchiha Sasuke, Hyuga Neji, Aburame Shino, Nara Shikamaru.
From Sunagakure: Gaara, Kankuro, Temari.
From Otogakure: Dosu Kinuta. For more chapters visit novelFɪre.net
Temari received a bye in the first round of the final tournament draw.
"The final selection will be a formal competition before the assembled Chunin of every nation," the Third Hokage announced. "You will represent your villages' combat strength. I expect you to perform at your best. Therefore, the finals will be held in one month's time."
"One month? Why not today?" Naruto blurted out, confused.
"This month is a preparation period," Sarutobi explained. "It allows time to inform the Feudal Lords and Kage of the participating nations so they may attend as spectators. More importantly, it gives you, the finalists, time to analyze your opponents' abilities from the preliminaries and train specifically. You fought blindly before. Now, you have intelligence. Use this month to grow stronger. You are all dismissed."
The candidates dispersed, each lost in thought, already strategizing for the month of intense training that lay ahead. The stage was set for the final act. And in the shadows, Ren waited, his own plans solidifying. The real storm was yet to come.
