CHAPTER 206: CHIEF SALAMANDARA [2]
"Golden eyes.. Golden eyes.." The garden had been mumbling nonstop ever since the village chief had revealed that she knew Coco wasn’t Coco Hughes anymore.
On the other hand, Coco remained seated and introduced herself properly to the chief.
"I see.. Coco Coison, was it?" Chief Salamandara hummed out, staring at the paper before her as she read the written name on it, a reading glasses perched on the bridge of her nose.
"So? What are your plans after taking over that body? Kingdom domination?" The tone the village chief used was lighthearted, but Coco can’t tell if she was joking or not.
"No." Coco denied and shook her head, "I was put in this body because it’s very similar to mine, but no, I’m not alcohol nor abusive nor a trash! I’m far from Coco Hughes and a very civilized one— I think.."
Coco mumbled the last two words under her breath, not fully trusting herself to be very civilized because she had resorted to violence not too long ago.
"If you’re not after kingdom domination or something like that.. Then, what are you doing? What are you trying to achieve?" The village chief raised an eyebrow and shifted her attention from the paper to Coco.
"Well, first of all, I’m trying to change Coco Hughes’ husbands’ thoughts about me. They think that I’m lying." Coco said, scratching the back of her head.
Strangely enough, her senses are not telling her to run away from the village chief after she revealed that she has a special ability, rather, she felt much safer and relaxed than earlier.
"That’s tough." Chief Salamandara commented with a sigh, "Coco Hughes had successfully pinned all her crap on her husbands so I don’t think you’ll be able to worm your way through their hearts, sweetheart."
Coco frowned. "If you knew what was happening, why didn’t you arrest Coco Hughes and throw her in prison? That way, the four of them wouldn’t have undergone something like that."
The village chief’s body twitched and Coco immediately noticed it.
".. It’s not that easy to interfere." Chief Salamandara uttered as she placed the paper down, "I could see through the mana wavelengths of each person I come across with, but in return, I can’t get myself involved with them."
"What do you mean?" Coco asked, her curiosity overpowering her frustration.
"It means, I can get myself and that person killed if I’m not careful." The purple haired woman stated bluntly, her eyes glowing for a moment before it went back to the usual full yellow ones.
"Killed?" Coco murmured, face scrunching up in confusion.
"I warned the husbands about Coco by the way, just in case you’re thinking of me as a bad person." Chief Salamandara quipped and forced a smile on Coco’s way, "I told the first husband that he shouldn’t let Coco Hughes take in another mediator because she will get worse."
"But Zaque didn’t listen?" Coco looked down on her feet, her hands balling into fists.
"Hmm.. No, not really, but it’s not like he has a say in the Baroness’ wishes, no?" The village chief asked, scratching her cheek as she shifted in her seat.
"That woman again? Just what’s up with this body’s mother anyway?" Coco frowned, her frustration shifting from how powerless Zaque was to Coco Hughes’ mother, not liking how much she came up in conversations lately.
"Baroness Hughes owns this village, Coco." Chief Salamandara chuckled out, "I’m currently the village chief, but I work under her."
Coco’s eyes went as wide as saucers and her body grew stiff, sitting upright on her seat as she stared at the village chief.
Chief Salamandara saw her reaction and laughed. "Oh, no, no, no, no, no! Don’t misunderstood my intentions, Coco! I may be working under your mother, but I don’t report everything to her. I only report who comes in and out of the village."
Coco didn’t felt assured, her eyes narrowing in a glare as she continued to stare at Chief Salamandara.
"If it makes you feel better, these eyes of mine is my ’special’ ability because I’m one of the descendants of the hybrid tribe." The village chief confessed, raising a hand to touch her left eye.
Coco felt her nerves relaxing a little as she blinked. "Hybrid tribe?"
"Yes, it’s where I came from." The chief smiled softly and relaxed in her seat, "I’m one of the few alive descendants and no one knows about this except my cousin and you."
"Even the Baroness?" Coco raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms in front of her.
"Especially the Baroness." Chief Salamandara said, subtly correcting Coco’s words as she laughed quietly under her breath, "I said this information because hybrids like me and my cousin are scorned upon, our special abilities makes us stand out."
"And your ability is to see mana wavelengths..?" Coco inquired, shifting herself in a comfortable position.
"Well.. You could say that." Chief Salamandara hummed out as she tapped her finger against the surface of the desk and adjusted her glasses, "I could see everything clearly up until fifteen miles.. But I can’t see things up close as clearly."
Coco blinked and the corner of her lips twitched upwards. "Perhaps.. Are you an owl hybrid?"
Chief Salamandara paused her tapping and stared at Coco for a good second, then she laughed as she nodded her head. "My, my, you’re quite knowledge, are you not? But yes, you’re right. I’m an owl hybrid."
Coco smiled and laughed quietly, the corner of her eyes crinkling in delight.
"It was just a guess, but I guess listening to my professor helped." Coco commented as she shook her head, feeling proud of herself from remembering how much her professor rambled how fascinating an owl could be.
"Owls have extraordinary night vision and can spot prey up to half a mile away— but this comes at a cost! Owls are farsighted, meaning they can’t clearly see things close to their eyes."
Truly, how can an owl be so fascinating?
